Another light practice with no hitting. They were in shells and shoulder pads.

Practice started off with them doing walk throughs on the punt return making sure everyone know where they are supposed to be and what the depth chart was.

Then they went into a lengthy amount of time doing individual drills for each position. They were really stressing fundamentals and making them work hard. Was a lot of fun to watch. I keyed in the RB's.

Then they lined up in punt return again but were actually letting the gunners go after it against the guys on the outside. This was fun as hell to watch. Jamalle Cornellius and Demario Minter were the gunners and were lining up against DRC and Rolle at the LOS. Neither guy could get off the line against those two. They locked them down cold. I think the furthest they were by the time the punt was caught was 10 yards past the LOS. they were really taking it to them. Oliver Celestin and Ralph Brown were doing it on the other side and they were getting beat by pretty much any gunner that lined up on them.

Funniest part of the punt return drills IMO was me seeing these booming spiraling punts and thinking to myself "damn this guys good" I literally in my mind thought maybe our punting woes are solved. It took about ten minutes and the crowd on the field splitting so I could see that it was the machine shooting the ball that high and far. :trout: What an idiot!

They broke out the 7 on 7 drills and rotated through the QB's. Leinart ended up being 4 for 7 with 3 TD's but missed wide open WR's in the endzone two times once to Pope and once to Fitz. He is definitely having accuracy issues at this point in camp.

Warner ended up being 5 for 7 with 3 TD's he probably should have had another TD if it wasnt just a fantastic play by Ralph Brown defending the ball in the corner endzone.

Pierre was 2 for 4 with 1 TD.

To end the practice they lined up O vs D and went at it. I have noticed that so far Leinart doesnt appear to be looking downfield and always taking the dump off. I take that with a grain of salt though since he only had about 5 plays. During Warners 5 plays he consistently threw the ball down field.

Jerhame Urban made an absolutely astounding circus catch on the sidelines during this and the crowd certainly showed their approval.

MISC:

Maybe its just me but Warner has always looked "chunky" in his uniform. He looks really slender this year and certainly looks like he has shedded several pounds.

Tim Hightower may not be fast per se but I can certainly see that burst that was talked about during draft time.

Antrelle Rolle has an absollute cannon for an arm. IM SERIOUS!

I will try and post a thread with some pictures in a few minutes.

Hope you guys like it!

I suppose there is some kinda rule about having a JUGGS machine play special teams isn't there?

We could put "Johnny" on the back of his jersey and make him #5.

Thanks Shane -- Have you noticed anything good or bad from Morelli or is he even getting snaps?

Good stuff, you had me excited about our punter for a second just like you were. Matt being inconsistant has become a persistant point so far in camp. Everything I've heard about DRC so far has been awesome (except that he has toothpicks for legs). I wonder if they will be hitting this afternoon. The matchups on O-Line against the Defense have been interesting. Personally, I'm hoping some one on the O-Line says ENOUGH and flattens Dockett or Chike. Not saying I think it will, or even can happen, just saying they need to get serious and demonstrate some pride. Anyone who can slow those two down is a starter.

I noticed that he has some really nice ZIP on his throws. He actually got some snaps at the end of practice during the "scrimmage portion" however he recieved no reps in the 7 on 7.

Cool, thanks. These updates are awesome, you're killing Somers and Urban.

I posted a thread after I flew back from NY with Kurt and his wife, where I specifically mentioned how ripped Kurt looked. I honestly don't ever remember him looking this cut. I'd love to know what he weighed in at and how that compares to prior years. He truly looks like he's got the body of a much younger player...
Regarding Matty - it's still early I know, and everyone here knows how down I am on him, but geez... He simply never seems to impress... I am so not sold on him and believe my worst fears stand a better than decent shot at materializing...
I liked Urban last year and really hope he makes the team and contributes this year!

Nice job Shane!

Good stuff!

Thanks for the info. Hmmmmmm Rolle and DRC stuffing the gunners. Sounds like a plan.

If memory serves, Kurt was fantastic in the red zone last year. One exception was the Niner game, when they tried to go to B.J. as time ran out.

I hadn't heard of Pope practicing until now, since he was recovering from his injury. I am glad you mentioned him because I was starting to worry that his recovery wasn't going as well as planned.

Thanks for the update. Maybe I'm just anxious but it seems to me that the NFL network is really a let down thus far. I thought that each year we would all see more and more training camp coverage and it doesn't seem like there's any more than last year.

Don't be too down on yourself, Shane. Reading the first sentence in the above paragraph, I was already thinking, yeah, but it's the altitude... :shades:

Morelli's arm strength has never been a question; the kid's got it. His problem is not knowing what to do with it...

Bob Kemp's Observations from the same practice

1) Leinart's way ahead of where he was last season, and is especially more accurate in drills.

2) The Cards are imagining a bit role for Tim Hightower this season. He was taking 1st team snaps with Edge James ahead of Marcel Shipp and J.J. Arrington, who will probably not have a job.

3) Chike Okeafor looks real good coming off injury. Bertrand Berry is in a battle for a starting job with LaBoy.

4) Breaston is entrenched as the #3 WR.

5) DRC is fast, without question. He has a lot to learn technique wise.

6) Calais Campbell certainly stands out for his size. He towers above his teammates. Whether he can actually play is still an open question.

Don't shoot the messenger.

For me, I hope that Whis starts getting physical with the practices. This team came out of camp soft last year, and were soft and undisciplined all season long. No more movie nights.

Awesome job on the updates, Shane! Thanks! With great reporting like this, there probably isn't any reason for anyone to go there themselves. :)

I've got a quick question: Is there a real reason for concern about Leinart, or do you think this is just normal early camp "rust"?

How much of the propensity to "dump off" comes from having Reggie Bush to dump it to in college? Anyone know if that was a frequent event at USC? Could be a habit that will take some time to break. Like Vince Young learning not to take off running too soon.

It would be very Cardinal for them to have drafted a Trent Green instead of a Carson Palmer.

Thats hilarious. Especially considering both abomb and I saw it with both sets of eyes. We also saw him get verbally scolded from the coach telling him he needs to get better.

Seems he is on par with everyhting else at least from my POV.

How much of it is just towing the company line? I've emailed back and forth with Urban a few times and it's pretty clear that these writers are aware of certain boundries and what liberties they can take with their opinions(if they want to keep their job).
