Bring in Corey Simon now = problems with Dockett from a contract renegotiation next year. Rather have a happy Dockett thank you.
That makes sense. Much moreso than K9s IMO. Since we dont carry a true NT.

the cutting of ohalete
My take on Ohalete was that he was "very athletic; but hadn't mastered the mental aspects of playing safety.

Wasn't it Ohalete who blew in out of control from the left side on a run blitz and whiffed the tackle ; thereby allowing the Oakland runner to turn a loss into a big gain?

On the Moss TD, the left safety was supposed to provide deep help and pick up Moss in Cover 2. He blew the assignment. Who was the safety? I didn't see who it was, but could it have been Ohalete?

Also - Don't prematurely assume these cuts guarantee roster spots for other Cardinal players. Next week, they will have to drop (12 standard plus 5 NFLE exempted =) 17 guys from the active roster to get from 65 to 53. And they could pick up waived guys as well.

Jeff,

The math you are working from is a tad incorrect.

We are currently sitting with a roster of 69 (64 +5 NFLE exemptions).

69-53= 16

But we still have to allow for 8 PS players.

Therefore we do not need to be prepared to cut 17 from the roster we are looking at now.

Aren't they technically cut and then re-signed. That's why a guy like Croom made the team last year because cutting him and then trying to resign him to the practice squad may not happen if another team signs him.

I'm guess Shazor may make the team for this reason also.

I know we currently need to cut only 16 (& not 17) but was assuming we'd sign someone and return to our 65 player limit. (But I'll defer to anyone else's math - whether it regards roster limits or cap numbers. I suck at that sort of stuff).

But anyway - just for fun - I took a look at our remaining roster and made the following assumptions regarding roster battles (using 17 as my target):

Running Back (Reduce by 1 Roster Spot)
Fighting for spot: Jackson, Hodgins or Morrow.

Wide Receiver (Reduce by 2)
Projected cuts: Holiday, McCoy

Tight End (Reduce by 2)
Fighting for spots: Bronson, Blizzard, Edwards (Inj)

Offensive Line (Reduce by 2)
Fighting for spots: Cantu, Lynch, Haayer, Wakefield

Defensive Line (Reduce by 2)
Projected cuts: T King, A Smith

Linebacker (Reduce by 3)
Fighting for spots: Keys, Towns, Hayes (inj), Mitchell, Johnson

Defensive Back (Reduce by 4)
Fighting for spots: Reid, Hardy, Mayes, Shazor, Harris, Tate, Walls

Special Teams (Reduce by 1)
Projected cut: Fordyce

Man! Even listing some of these guys (like Wakefield, Hayes, Mitchell and 4 of the 6 DB's) is hard to stomach, but that's how (barring pickups or trades) I think things will boil down.

Where are your PS players? That's eight people who don't have to be cut.

A. Smith (DE) as a cut.......that leaves just Okeafor and Berry and Pace........we need more than that.

PS guys:
DB) Hardy and/or Reid
LB) Mitchell
TE) Bronson
WR) Holiday and possibly McCoy
DL) possibly King(Tyler)
OL) Cantu (if eligible)

Jeff is right. They have to be cut first before they can be put on the PS.

Come the cut down date, we will CUT/IR 17 players.

Then re-sign 8 guys for the PS a few days later.

I assume you are looking for a FA pickup since that would mean only 3 DE's on the roster.

Bronson won't go to PS. If any TE it will be Edwards. I can't see us keeping 3 TE's on the 53 man roster.

I disagree with Holiday.....I see him as a cut. One of Sheldon and/or McCoy will be PS bound, but not both.

Tyler King is too darn small. He gets cut IMO.

Cantu is eligible.

Hardy and/or Reid....perhaps both, dependent on Walls eventual status.

Perhaps S. Lynch (C) now that Conatay is on IR.

I thought released players had to clear waivers before they could be placed on PS (And even then, aren't there ways a team's PS can be raided by other teams?).

Since this would be a major unknown, I'd rather just say that, in addition to the 17 released guys, some of them might be re-signed as PS players.

Regarding, depth on the D-line, I originally felt we'd carry 8 (Okeafor, Davis, Dockett, Berry, Pace, Bulman, Kolodziej and Smith). But, if we have to cut 17, I think we'd have to go with 7 defensive linemen with Kolodziej the all-purpose swingman who can also play end.

But you're probably right - if we only need to reduce our active roster by 16, we'd keep 8 defensive linemen and possibly keep A Smith. (One dicey scenario would have us signing Corey Simon. Then what? Probably Bulman would go off the roster to hopefully be re-signed as a PS player).

Surprised on Ohalete.
Disappointed on JR's IR.
Don't care about King. Hasn't done anything yet for us.
I guess Anderson will be the KO return guy? He did ok on one return against Raiders.
Who will be the punt return guy? Sheldon has not shown anything yet to get excited.

I thought Ohalete clearly outplayed Harris this preseason. Maybe Harris will get cut too.

Don't Harris and Ohalete play different positions....Harris (SS) and Ohalete (FS)

Holiday showed me enuf at Prescott to be on P.S. this year and sent to NFL Europe next spring to really learn the wide receiver postion. He has good size and good hands and could be developed into a 5th or 6th receiver. He made a couple of sparkling catches in training camp and showed good effort. If he wasn't P.S. material, he probably would have been cut by now. I just hope he gets some reps versus Denver.

I see them carrying three TEs unless until Edwards returns from injury.

Yeah, Tyler King really doesn't have the size, I just put him on to get to 8 players.

Hambrick cut! Zellner cut! Ohalate cut! These guys were starters last year, does this indicate that the Cardinals are significantly better than last year at these positions???

Last year the draft pick for Hambrick/Zellner was looking pretty good, but now...

King to IR that's just too bad, it would be good to see what he has got. By next season it will have been two years without playing in a game. JR Redmond was a good pickup, again this sucks.

Looks like Bulman is making a push to back-up R. Davis. I like the kid, don't know yet if he has got the stuff, though!

Jacksons' as good as gone. He has done nothing in the preseason games.

Wide Receiver (Reduce by 2)
Projected cuts: Holiday, McCoy

Tight End (Reduce by 2)
Fighting for spots: Bronson, Blizzard, Edwards (Inj)
Don't be surprised if Bronson is the one left standing!

Offensive Line (Reduce by 2)
Fighting for spots: Cantu, Lynch, Haayer, Wakefield
Do the Cards try to hold Cantu for Mexico City?

Defensive Line (Reduce by 2)
Projected cuts: T King, A Smith
Who is the #4 DE?

Linebacker (Reduce by 3)
Fighting for spots: Keys, Towns, Hayes (inj), Mitchell, Johnson
I don't believe Hayes is at risk.

Defensive Back (Reduce by 4)
Fighting for spots: Reid, Hardy, Mayes, Shazor, Harris, Tate, Walls

Special Teams (Reduce by 1)
Projected cut: Fordyce
Guaranteed. :stick:

You're right. Harris is second string now to A. Wilson. Griffith's backup is now listed as Jermaine Hardy.

Hambone was never the starter. It was between Smith and Shipp but after Shipp went down for the season, Emmitt was automatically the starter.
How many games did Zellner start? Not too many. I think he got injured beginning of the season?

Didn't Hambrick start when Emmitt was injured? If not start, there were a couple games he played the majority of snaps? Or is my memory worse than I thought and I am confusing last year with the previous...

Zellner was already replied to by joe.

Any way not my point... Last year Hambrick, Zellner, Ohalate made the Cards a better team than previously, this year they seem expendable. That would imply the Cards are a better team than last year!

Wow.

Redmond and King lost for the season. I guess it could be worse but both guys looked very promising this preseason.

Really? coz I didnt see anything out of King that would make me feel like it is a great loss....
