Sounds good to me. It will save alot of broken hearts and anger down the road. I said it before, I will say it again. When Green leaves this team in the shambles he will leave it in, we will all look back fondly on the Buddy Ryan era.

Explain to me for one moment, since you are so sure of things, how this cut makes ANY sense when he is placing a rookie at the most inportant position on the OL?

Most important position on the OL? Let's not get overdramatic here, there is a reason that centers are paid the least of all offensive line positions. Let's see what the product is before we freak out.

Our O-Line sucks. Time for some new blood. Obviously, Green thinks Kendall isn't going to get the job done so he's gone. Considering that Green has coached 8 teams to the playoffs, I'm not ready to give up on him before Training Camp even begins.

I don't know the success rate of rookie centers in the league, but this is still football not freakin' rocket science. Stepanovich has got all of TC and preseason to learn Green's system if he is going to end up the starter.

Sorry but C is most important whether they are paid like it or not. C makes all the call to protect the QB from EVERY angle not just what the LT sees.

Best of luck to the OL now. Hope it works out. I still think Green f-ed this up.

BTW, I thought the Bob Wylie hiring was huge (still do) but he cannot work miracles. IMO, the Cards were closer to the playoffs with Kendall at C than they are with the rookie.

Cardinals release veteran starting center Kendall
Aug. 1, 2004
SportsLine.com wire reports

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals released center Pete Kendall on Sunday, less than three weeks after new coach Dennis Green installed the eight-year veteran as a starter.

Kendall, who signed with Arizona as an unrestricted free agent in 2001, started 23 games at left guard his first two years with the Cardinals and 13 at center last season. After separating a shoulder Dec. 7 at San Francisco, Kendall got in on just one play in the final three contests.

Green sidestepped questions about why Kendall was dropped and whether the move was related to player complaints about the intensity of summer workouts.

The NFL made the Cardinals forfeit their final week of workouts last month after a group of players complained to the union that the team had violated league rules by working the players too hard.

Green, hired to rebuild a 4-12 team after coach Dave McGinnis was fired, said he wasn't going after whisteblowers.

"From the very first day, I've said that the team has not played as well as they could play, and that's the team," Green said. "Along that way, no one should be surprised at anything."

Green was critical of Arizona's offensive line after watching last season's game film.

He already demoted tackle L.J. Shelton from the first unit.

Green said rookie Alex Stepanovich, a fourth-round draft pick, would be moved into Kendall's spot. Stepanovich started 26 games at Ohio State.

The Cardinals also drafted Kansas State guard Nick Leckey in the sixth round, and Green listed him as a center.

Kendall was a first-round pick by Seattle in the 1996. He started 75 of 76 games he played with the Seahawks.

Offensive lineman Kendrick Rogers, who was on the 53-man roster for eight games last season before a season-ending wrist injury, also was waived on the eve of training camp.

Didn't you hear? The OL sucked last year and it was all Kendall's fault. Good riddance I say. Green is a genius.

Relax. No one said it was "all Kendall's fault", but you say Kendall was a great leader? Why? A good leader pulls people together and gets the most out of their abilities. Have you seen any of that from our O-Line since Kendall got here? It seems obvious to me that our O-Line has no leader.

Kendall deserves a fair share of the blame for our O-Line underperforming IMO. Couple that with his injury problems and I can see why he was released.

But that's just me. :)

Hopped on with the hope that a pick had been signed and this is what I see.

Let me take aa stab at this situation for a moment,

How would people feel if Green had cut McCown today...they very day the players were leaving for camp? Everyone would have been even more bewildered and pissed about that and this is where I really really disagree with this move.

Kendall was the QB of the OL. He made the calls and I would be willing to bet he made mostly right calls (executing the calls is something completely different). So Lindsey is going to take his place??? Just what I want...Minnesota Vikings Southwest. Sorry this is lunacy because the ONLY alternative right now is a rookie who has no idea what is going on in the NFL even if he did go to OSU.

I have been a vocal critic of the Green hiring thus far and this only adds fuel to the fire IMO. If this is a petty cut because someone complained about rules that WERE broken, then I will have lost all respect I have for Green because clearly this wasn't an injury issue. Stupid bastard hacks players to satisfy his ego an for really no other reason.

Go AZ Vikings...er I mean...Cardinals.

BTW, as Green is building this "powerhouse" always remember he is not a closer. He never won a Super Bowl as coach...nor did he make it. That may not matter to win starved Cards fans but it should.

That is a good post.

I unfortunately like Green, but if I didn't that post is good.

Yes, this is the Arizona "Vikings" cause Green coached the Vikings for a long time and will bring that to Arizona. But the Vikings play like a team coached by Tice the idiot.

I do agree Kendell is a great offensive linemen but if there is no chemistry in the line then all five are worthless. A line MUST act as a unit. Sometimes it just doesn't work on the field like it does on paper. I hope Kendell lands with a contender he deserves to show his skills on the big stage IF he can stay healthy.

Peace

This thread sounds similar. Oh yeah, it's a near replica of those earlier this year when Parsons, Lucas, Marcus Bell, and other players who have never even sniffed a Pro Bowl got cut.

If Green cuts Anquan or Dexter Jackson, then I start raising my eyebrows. Until then I have faith in the guy because no one who has been cut so far has shown themselves to be good NFL players. At best, Kendall was an average, injury-prone center who was making the kind of money reserved for above-average guards who play all the time. I told my brother a while ago that we'd have about half of our 2003 roster still playing for us in 2004. Considering what I witnessed last year, that is a very good thing.

I must say initially I was shocked. However the 2 centers we drafted now make more sense. I think Denny has been thinking about this for some time now.

Man this has been an unforgettable offseason! I love it.

WHAT?!?!?! I get home from going out of town for the weekend and I see that we've cut Kendall. It's like... another world.

I'm curious as hell now... What could the story be behind this dilemma?

And I like it.

Marvin Lewis had a something like 30 player turnover his first year in Cincy and they had a good trun around.

People are acting like we lost a pro bowl C or something.

Seeing as our QB's ran for their life constantly maybe the new guy will confuse the Defense with his oddball blocking calls cause what we were doing didn't seem to bother the defenses we faced.

As a Bears fan, you certainly are no slouch on watching personnel f-ups.

BTW, what was the Bears record against Green's teams?

Arizona Sports Report just interviewed Denny Green and Green said that he reviewed tape from 5 road losses last year and saw five O-linemen playing as individuals with no cohesion. Green said some changes needed to be made. However, that's Denny Green just talking coachspeak. The Sports Report commentators mentioned that Pete Kendall was one of the guys who complained to the player's union about Denny Green's off-season program and Denny Green found out about it. The league made Arizona forfeit the last week of their off-season team workouts as a result. Supposedly Marcel Shipp was another one who complained to the player's union. Denny Green sent a stern message to the team on the eve of the start of their training camp by cutting Pete Kendall, the guy he had slated to be his starting center. Now the job falls on the shoulders of some rookie center they drafted.

Would rather have a veteran running our o-line...if Green is predictable, which he isn't, how about a retired Viking...Christy from Tamba Bay who also played with Green in Minnesota

...a bit shocked, but we were 4-12 and have sucked for many years...

...perhaps a rookie at center, but I doubt it.

Go Cardinals

What the F!

If Green is just trying to make a statement, that sucks as it's not like the Cards have a ton of quality vets.

Kendall would have probaly played at a above average level for 12 games this year. The Cards may not have gotten their money's worth, but I don't see any player on the roster playing as good. Yes, there was a chance of him going down for good this year, but he really tries hard to play and those kind of players should be rewared, not cut.

I guess Green waited until he found a reasonable vet replacement. Once found, anyone who complains is gone.

Damn, I just don't see how this impoves the Cards at all. 4-12 or 7-9. I'd rather keep Kendal and have 7-9.

Maybe Green wants to set a record. Most seasons with the youngest team in the league.

Run Josh Run!
