"When we did our free-agency ratings we had him rated as the best safety," head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We never thought we had an opportunity to get him, so we feel very fortunate we got this deal worked out.

"To have an opportunity to get him is something we feel very good about. He's a proven starter in the league so you know you're getting quality from that standpoint. The thing I like about him is that he's big and physical. He fits in to the mentality we want to establish."

Ok, I am officially down with this signing. Knowing he was rated as their best safety in FA and that they signed him means a lot, to me at least.

They lost out on Kelly who they were very high on, but got Holt. Ok...good job.

Instead of signing talent like Kevin K, the Cards give up and decide to ask the ugly girl to the prom to avoid rejection. yippie. :sarcasm: Well, hopefully this means Fransisco starts. Now if we bring back Tom Knight for CB help, and Sekou Sanyika for LB depth and this will be a successful offseason. :sarcasm:

Holt last two years: 117 tackles, 5 picks, 4 passes defended

KK last two years: 150 tackles, 9 picks, 6 passes defended

KK gave up a lot of big plays too though. I was at a website, yesterday called "scientificfootball" that had him rated as the worst player in the Bengals secondary. There's a reason the guy was benched as a CB, and then as a S.

Did he even visit anyone else? Since he came after KK does that mean he's the second choice? And he gets a 5-year deal?!?

Hate to rain on the parade but this guy comes from THE Detriot Lions and they apparently didn't want him back. The same Detriot Lions featuring the 28th rated 2006 NFL defense, which ranked dead last in pass completion percentage against at 66.3%.

Is this even an upgrade from Robert Griffin?

So obviously it was all his fault, and he sucks.

Wonder where they have Ken Hamlin ranked?

They never made an offer to Kasevaharn. So, I think Whis is telling the truth that Holt was their top choice at S.

I seem to recall Holt being one of the top rated safeties in the 2003 draft befhind Polomalu and Boss Baily, does anyone know why he slipped to the 5th round?

But why wait to bring him in? If he was tops on their board and they were going to address the position, why do you ever take the chance of him getting scooped up if he is tops on your FA board at that position?

I am not sayin Whis is spinning this but it just seems strange they were so laissez-faire about getting him in if he was top of the pops.

Maybe he couldn't come in until he did.

Any chance this silences the darksiders for thw eekend

I am not a darksider and I am still not impressed but I like the Holt signing. He is a starter in the NFL and it fills a need.

He is not somebody elses back-up that we are signing to start and he is young.

Best we can hope for is a couple of hours.

20yrs of futility and "I told you so's" are hard to overcome until the team actually starts winning.

If you want to shut up the true Cardinal fans who care but are tired of losing...just win baby!

The others who are just happy being miserable will be easily singled out at that point.

Who is it that is happy being miserable?

That I am aware of, the only other visit he made was Dallas. I would think his schedule would be pretty free the first week of March as a FA but heck, maybe he just wanted to make the Cards wait?

I still think the signing is a good one and has marginally made the defense better but I just kind of question the notion he was the top S on their FA board.

There is life outside of football, perhaps that got in the way?

Good signing, would rather have Hamlin but Holt to me is better than KK in the long run. Its a definite upgrade over Griffith, who played hard but had his best days behind him.

At least they addressed one position of need this offseason. Now address either OT or OLB in FA and then the other in the draft.

We still need depth though...

From Scouts:

Holt plays safety more like a quarterback, getting the defense lined up properly and communicating adjustments according to the offensive formation and alignment. Holt brings very good football savvy and awareness to the position and is a good on-field leader with strong recognition skills. He is an athletic safety with decent size and quickness yet is forced to make up for his lack of top-end speed with preparation and anticipation. Holt does a good job of reading the quarterback in zone coverage yet must be careful not to take too many chances, because he lacks the make-up speed to stop a big play when he guesses wrong. In Detroit's base Tampa Cover 2 scheme, Holt is very solid, but he can become a liability if asked to play too much man coverage. Holt is only adequate in man-to-man and cannot match up against speed receivers down the field. He has decent size but is not very physical. Holt will play run support yet misses too many tackles in the open field and all too often grabs ballcarriers rather than tackling them. Holt must improve the run support and tackling portions of his game. Holt is not very physical, and he has missed playing time due to injuries ranging from back problems to an elbow injury that sent him to the IR in 2005. Holt is a smart player with solid ball skills who has the potential to improve, but playing with toughness is not a trait that can be coached.

Lions Fan here....

I'm sorry to see Holt leave Detroit. He was always one of my favorite players. The kids got game. The big knock on him is his pedestrian speed. But the kid is one of those types thats always around the ball, if there was a big play going down Holt was usually in the middle of it. He's been starting in the DET backfield since he was drafted, and year in and year out they try to replace him but come opening day he's a starter again. Last year the Lions drafted FS Bullocks in the second round and it wasn't till the end of the year until Holt was finally bucked out of the FS position and they often he replaced the SS because he had better range. An added bonus the kid can block kicks, he's the all time leader in blocks at NC state and had several big knock downs for the Liedowns, err Lions. I'll miss Holt.....you will like him.
