Start with 17,

add 14 for Carson,

add 6 million for Iupati.

3.5 million for AD

Veldheer 6.9 million is a possibility

Bucannon 5th year option is set at 8 million which I think the team can reduce with a new contract

Mauro 2.8 million is a possibility

Dawson 3.5 million they can probably get a cheaper kicker

Bethea 3.5 million, old and injured, could be a possibility

There are other contracts they can play with too. I think they get to at least 45 million

Nice. I think we'll have a good amount of money to work with. Now the question is, who to target? I think Veldheer is probably gone, so at least an OT and then we need some receivers. I'm still a fan of trying to bring in a guy like Terrelle Pryor on the cheap along with a couple of other vets to all compete. And draft a few guys. What we do on a higher value level depends on if Fitz retires, IMO.

Veldheer is reporting that he wants to play next year & he isn't having any thoughts of retiring.

That doesn't mean the Cards won't cut him to save cap space or try to re-work his deal.

Maybe you haven’t watched Pryor. IMO, he stinks.
I watched him play pretty heavily with the Browns and Redskins. He's pretty decent for what the price should be and fills a need as a guy with speed and size. He's better than anything we have on our roster right now aside from Fitz (Chad Williams and JJ Nelson). He could compete for #2 or settle in as the #3.

Pryor has skillet hands and runs lazy routes. He has one of the highest drop % in the league.

So:

lets assume the following dont come back:

Palmer (duh)
Iupati
Gresham (post June 1 cut)
A. Peterson
T. Matheiu (assuming no paycut is taken)

+ sign Buccanon to a deal that lowers his cap number of $8.8mm to something in the $6mm range

Cards have cap space of $~50 million this offseason, plus -- post 2018, they get rid of another $25 million in dead money from the above moves. Add in Fitz retiring post 2018 and its another $40 million freeing up in 2019.

This provides enormous flexibility to rework the roster heading into the 2019 season.

No he would be tagged
The tag just guarantees the 49ers get right to make the best offer and get high comp picks if they are outbid, right? Can't you still make an offer on a guy with the tag?

You'll pay more than that to field a starting QB (plus a backup or two), a starting TE, starting guard, and starting nickel-back.

You have to carry the Gresham contract through 6/1 even if you designate him a 6/1 cut, and that adds to your dead money in 2019.

Idk, he only had 240 yards & 1 TD in just 9 games. He just stinks honestly.
