Cards Make Roster Moves




Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals today announced that the team has signed running back James Jackson, linebacker Eric Johnson, and running back J.R. Redmond. In accordance with club policy, terms were not disclosed. In addition, the Cardinals have released linebacker Leon Joe and wide receiver Luke Powell.

Jackson (5-10, 215) is a veteran of five NFL seasons with career numbers of 321 carries for 1,071 yards and five touchdowns along recording 30 receptions for 201 yards in 43 career games (16 starts). He played in four games with Cleveland in 2004 collecting 12 carries for 81 yards and six receptions for 22 yards before being released on November 16. He was then claimed by Green Bay on November 23 and appeared in one game in a reserve role until being released on December 7. The former third round pick of the Browns (65th overall) in 2001 out of Miami, Jackson started 10 games in 2001 with 554 rushing yards and two touchdowns before being placed on injured reserve on December 20.

Johnson (6-0, 210) is a veteran of five NFL seasons playing with two NFL teams with career numbers of 42 career tackles and one interception in 71 career games (two starts). He played in 16 games with seven tackles as well as both postseason contests for the Atlanta Falcons in 2004. The former Alhambra High School and Phoenix native originally signed with Oakland as a rookie free agent out of Nebraska in 2000 where he was for his first four years of his career. He also has appeared in seven postseason contests, including in Super Bowl XXXVII for the Raiders where he scored on a 13-yard touchdown off of a blocked Tampa Bay punt.

Redmond (5-11, 215) is also a veteran of five NFL seasons with career numbers that include 194 carries for 676 yards and one touchdown rushing and 68 receptions for 502 yards and two touchdowns receiving in 50 career games (six starts). He appeared in 16 games (one start) in 2004 with 21 carries for 119 yards in addition to a career-high 32 receptions for 233 yards for the Oakland Raiders. The former Arizona State product was originally drafted by New England in the third round (76th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played three seasons with the Patriots, including appearing in Super Bowl XXXVI, before moving to the Raiders where he played the last two seasons. The former Sun Devil standout (1996-1999) was named the team’s offensive MVP three times (1997-1999) and ranks third in ASU history with 616 attempts for 3,210 yards rushing.

Joe appeared in five games last season on special teams after being claimed off of waivers from Chicago on September 16. He was originally a fourth round selection (112th overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft by Chicago. Joe was inactive for 10 other games while on the Cardinals active roster.

Powell was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent on January 18, 2005. He attended training camp with San Diego last summer as an undrafted rookie free agent from Stanford before being waived by the Chargers on September 1, 2004.

Four RB's would mean either 5 WRs or just 1 FB. To keep four they'd better contribute a lot on special teams. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think Jackson or Redmond are great special teams players.

Anyway, I don't think any of these guys are there to replace Hambrick. None of them are goal line backs, and basically Redmond and Jackson are guys that have been fringe players their entire careers. It is always nice to see another Miami player in camp, though.

If Troy Hambrick comes to camp and is in shape, though, I'd be really, really worried if I were Marcel Shipp, because Jackson or even Redmond could take his job like that.

Agreed. Hodgins has done nothing as a Cardinal except miss blocks and games.

Well, your opinion is pretty meaningless. Especially since you're basing it on 92 career carries. Or maybe his 7 red zone rushing attempts last season. I don't know. But "hoping" isn't probably a big part of Denny Green's goalline philosophy.

But his 1 carry for 2 yards and a first down last season on fourth downs is a pretty good sign.

At least you're not insisting Hodgins can do the job.

He hasn't done much as a KR in the pros. He actually had more chances last year than any year in his career. Just 20 yds a pop on 12 chances over his career.

I understand that you hate Shipp, but for you to say one of these guys could take his place "like that" is really out of whack. Unless Shipp has some serious problems with his injury, neither of these guys will beat him out of a job.
