CARDINALS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FREE AGENT
RUNNING BACK EDGERRIN JAMES
Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has agreed to terms with free agent running back Edgerrin James on a four-year contract. In accordance with club policy, terms were not disclosed.
The four-time Pro Bowl selection, James (6-0, 214) has played and started in 95 career regular season games in seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts since being selected with the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft out of Miami. The Colts all-time leading rusher had 2,188 career carries for 9,226 yards and 64 rushing touchdowns in his tenure in Indianapolis. James also has 356 receptions for 2,839 yards and 11 touchdowns receiving in his seven seasons. He has nine postseason starts with 157 carries for 616 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 28 receptions for 222 yards.
James started 15 games in 2005 (inactive the last game of the season vs. AZ) and started the team’s playoff game against Pittsburgh. He had 360 carries for 1,506 yards (4.2 yard avg.) and 13 touchdowns, his third consecutive season with over 1,000 yards rushing and his fifth in seven years. His 13 touchdowns were his fourth season with over 10 touchdowns rushing. He also had 44 receptions for 337 yards and one touchdown through the air.
He won the NFL rushing title in back-to-back seasons starting in 1999 as a rookie when he rushed for 1,553 yards on 369 carries (4.2 yard avg.) and 13 touchdowns while also being named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2000, James led the NFL with a franchise record 1,709 yards rushing on 387 carries (4.4 yard avg.) with 13 touchdowns.
The 28-year old Immokalee, Florida native has only missed 16 games in his seven seasons in the league. He has registered 49 100+ rushing performances in 95 games, ranking eighth in NFL history for most 100+ rushing games. The Colts own a 43-6 record in his 100+ rushing games and James has tallied at least 100 scrimmage yards in 75 of 96 career games.
James is the third free agent to agree to terms (Kendrick Clancy, Milford Brown) since the free agency period began.
