CARDINALS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FREE AGENT

RUNNING BACK EDGERRIN JAMES

Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has agreed to terms with free agent running back Edgerrin James on a four-year contract. In accordance with club policy, terms were not disclosed.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection, James (6-0, 214) has played and started in 95 career regular season games in seven seasons with the Indianapolis Colts since being selected with the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft out of Miami. The Colts all-time leading rusher had 2,188 career carries for 9,226 yards and 64 rushing touchdowns in his tenure in Indianapolis. James also has 356 receptions for 2,839 yards and 11 touchdowns receiving in his seven seasons. He has nine postseason starts with 157 carries for 616 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 28 receptions for 222 yards.

James started 15 games in 2005 (inactive the last game of the season vs. AZ) and started the team’s playoff game against Pittsburgh. He had 360 carries for 1,506 yards (4.2 yard avg.) and 13 touchdowns, his third consecutive season with over 1,000 yards rushing and his fifth in seven years. His 13 touchdowns were his fourth season with over 10 touchdowns rushing. He also had 44 receptions for 337 yards and one touchdown through the air.

He won the NFL rushing title in back-to-back seasons starting in 1999 as a rookie when he rushed for 1,553 yards on 369 carries (4.2 yard avg.) and 13 touchdowns while also being named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2000, James led the NFL with a franchise record 1,709 yards rushing on 387 carries (4.4 yard avg.) with 13 touchdowns.

The 28-year old Immokalee, Florida native has only missed 16 games in his seven seasons in the league. He has registered 49 100+ rushing performances in 95 games, ranking eighth in NFL history for most 100+ rushing games. The Colts own a 43-6 record in his 100+ rushing games and James has tallied at least 100 scrimmage yards in 75 of 96 career games.

James is the third free agent to agree to terms (Kendrick Clancy, Milford Brown) since the free agency period began.

Edgerrin James: Cards Get Edge
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Sunday, March 12, 2006

Update: The Cardinals and James agreed to a four-year deal Sunday, the team's official site reports. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Recommendation: Getting an elite running back like James is a tremendous signing for the Cardinals. James, who rushed for 1,506 yards and 13 touchdowns last season with the Colts, is expected to make an immediate impact for an Arizona running game that ranked last in the league in 2005. The versatile James added 44 catches for 337 yards and a score out of the backfield. With Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald drawing attention from safeties, opposing defenses will have a hard time stacking the line against the run.

Cards agree to deal with free-agent RB James
ESPN.com news services

Edgerrin James
James

The Cardinals made a big splash in the free-agent market Sunday, agreeing in principle to a contract with running back Edgerrin James, a source close to the team told ESPN.com.

James' deal is for four years, the Arizona Republic reported, although financial terms were not immediately available.

The Colts, who believed they had a "50-50" chance of retaining the two-time rushing champion, were faced with salary-cap restrictions.

Along with league MVP Shaun Alexander, who re-signed with the Seahawks, and Jamal Lewis, who helped lead Baltimore to a Super Bowl title, James was considered one of the top running backs on the market.

Colts president Bill Polian could have kept James by using the franchise tag on him for the second straight year after receiver Reggie Wayne agreed to a new six-year, $39 million contract. The Colts also signed defensive lineman Raheem Brock to a five-year deal Friday.

Instead, Polian decided against using the tag, which would have increased James' salary next season to more than $10 million.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Bit of a surprise, especially the swiftness of it. Did it to energize their fan base going into the stadium. Guesses it is for SA type of money.
Cards need to fix their line.

Screw ESPN - they got scooped on this one, and azcardinals.com is the only "news" source that matters here!

Mort basically said that he was mildly surprised by the signing. He said that he would gues that it is in the 7-8 million dollar per year range just like Alexander.

Also stated that unless we get our O-line fixed it isnt going to matter.
