The Cardinals have signed veteran LB Quentin Groves, releasing UDFA WR Marc Wilson to make room on the roster.

The guy hasn't don't ANYTHING in 4 years. Started 20+ games the last 3 years with Zero Sacks.

Unless he makes some sort of meteoric rise after sucking for his first 4 seasons like Jerome Harrison did, my hopes are about as low as they come. But its also zero risk so why the heck not.

Very interesting signing! If you Google Groves you will see a play on YouTube where at Auburn, with a slight lead over Josh Freeman and Kansas St., Groves stormed the back edge and sacked Freeman forcing a big-time fumble and now Auburn/Cardinals teammate Antonio Coleman scoops it up and takes it to the house!

You will also see a tipped interception he made against Derek Anderson and the Cardinals.

Groves had 2.5 sacks his first year for the Jags---but none since---so it's not like he's been a world beater---but then again neither was James Harrison his first four years in the league.

Groves has the proto-typical 34 OLB size at 6-3, 258---hey, who knows, right?

Definitely worth a flyer, but keep the expectations low. Here were his NFL Combine measurables:

Height Weight Arm 40 10Y BP Broad Vert 20s 3Cn
6'3" 259 n/a 4.75 1.57 30 10'00" 35" 4.42 7.31

For comparison, here are the avg measurables for NFL Elite 3-4 OLBs like Ware, Matthews, Orakpo, Woodley, etc, etc:

Height Weight Arm 40 10Y BP Broad Vert 20s 3Cn
6'2"+ 259 33"+ 4.67 1.60 25 10'00" 36" 4.30 7.00

Groves has ideal size and above avg strength by comparison. Good explosiveness based on Vert and Broad jumps numbers, but below avg agility based on 3 Cone & 20 yard shuttle numbers. For reference, here were Sam Acho's numbers last year:

Height Weight Arm 40 10Y BP Broad Vert 20s 3Cn
6'2" 263 33"+ 4.66 1.66 23 9'04" 33.5" 4.35 6.69

Horton the elephant saves Whos, Not ever OLB is a sack specialist, yea He should have got more than none by accident, but he has a clean slate and might fit well in our middle next to Dwash? I always thought Groves could play SIL.

I remember liking him when he was drafted, but yeah, he hasn't done squat in the pros.

Fingers crossed.

How did Stewart Bradley make his way into this thread?

I would have been really excited about this move a few years ago, since I liked Groves in the draft. Now, I have my doubts he'll make the final roster, but I'm fine with giving him a try.

Raider fans seem to have loved him. Lot's of Re-tweets about how they would miss him and wishing him luck.

Personally..... After I got over my initial shock that Raider fans knew how to use the internet, I found that he made a positive impact on their fan base and that they would miss his contributions.

I hope he works out.

More on Groves signing:

Cardinals sign Quentin Groves

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 24, 2012, 6:10 PM EDT

Free agent linebacker Quentin Groves has found a new home in Arizona.
The Cardinals signed Groves today, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Groves was a second-round pick of the Jaguars in 2008 and spent two seasons in Jacksonville, playing in all 32 games but struggling to find a place for himself on the defense. He was traded to the Raiders for a fifth-round pick in 2009 and spent two years in Oakland, earning a spot in the starting lineup in his first season but being mostly a backup in 2011.

In Arizona Groves will provide depth at the outside linebacker position, where O’Brien Schofield and Sam Acho are penciled in as the starters, and contribute on special teams.

Me too. But whether he works out or not I'm happy to see the Cards bringing in OLBs who are 10 years younger and 10 pounds heavier than the guys they had starting at those positions.

Speaking of old men at OLB. I wonder if this signing means that we've seen the end of Clark Haggans tenure in the AZ? Reading between the lines I get the impression that Urban thinks Haggans will be back. Or it could be that the speculation that the Cards will bring Haggans back was referring to posts on ASFN.

With all the players in camp right now the Cards have held off issuing #'s 53, 91,and 72 (Haggans, Vonnie Holiday, and Brandon Keith).

I like him, maybe he will be a good fit in this system. He has ability but, IIRC, doesn't, or hasn't he had, some medical issues? At least they didn't sign him to a 5 year, $30 mill deal :D.

The Jets signed a guy last year that was a former first rounder (I believe) of the Bills and had zero sacks in about three years with Buffalo but had a good year, though I don't know his stats, in NY. Forget his name. So I think that Groves was worth signing, especially considering our lack of depth at OLB.

Rattling around somewhere in my memory bank is a report from a few years back suggesting we had an interest in Groves back then.

Anyone remember this?
