The Diamondbacks promoted outfielder Carlos Quentin to the big leagues from Triple-A Tucson today. Quentin, a first-rounder out of Stanford in 2003, was hitting .289/.424/.487 in 318 at-bats this season for the Sidewinders

I haven't seen any mention of this on any other source so I don't know if I believe it completely.

Weird. Usually when they release something like that they mention if someone is injured or sent down. Possible trade going through today?

Seems plausable. They sent down Gonzalez yesterday so they could call up a position player.

Checked it. Edgar Gonzales was sent down. Found this on the dbacks website:

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks days of playing with a four-man bench will likely come to an end Thursday.

After Wednesday night's 8-0 win over the Dodgers, the D-Backs optioned reliever Edgar Gonzalez to Triple-A Tucson.

A corresponding move won't be announced until Thursday, but given that manager Bob Melvin has referred to having eight pitchers in the bullpen and just four reserves on the bench a "dicey" proposition, it's likely a hitter will be added to the roster.

Tucson is loaded with hitting prospects, the most prominent among them being outfielder Carlos Quentin, who went into Wednesday's action with a .427 on-base percentage and a .494 slugging mark.

Infielder Alberto Callaspo is another possibility.

Back at first: After missing two straight days at first base, Conor Jackson returned to the lineup and hit cleanup on Wednesday.

Jackson strained his left shoulder Sunday while applying a tag to Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder.

Melvin said that Jackson would have been used as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday, if the situation had presented itself.

"If we got to that spot in the ninth inning, he was going to hit," Melvin said. "Actually, he could have played yesterday. But with kind of a limited bench, we didn't want to get into a situation if it was bothering him out there in a game situation that we had to get him out of there."
Jackson admitted that sitting on the bench the past two days left him somewhat restless.
"It's tough," he said. "You don't have to sit down. I was ready to go [Tuesday]."

Former first baseman Shawn Green played first in the interim and was back in right field on Wednesday.

Making it big: Melvin said that Tony Pena pitched well in his Major League debut on Tuesday. The right-handed reliever threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up a run on two hits.

The run, however, could have been avoided, but second baseman Orlando Hudson lost sight of the ball as it blended into a fan's white shirt in the background.

"I thought he threw the ball great," Melvin said. "'O' completely loses the ball in somebody's shirt. That's going to happen. That's just the circumstance, bad luck at the time. But if he gets that out, he probably gets a clean two innings right there."

Melvin added that Pena throws three quality pitches, which is rare for a reliever. The 24-year-old was converted from a starter during Spring Training.

"As a [reliever], I think he's developed his changeup and his slider a little bit better to where he even has the stuff to go out there and start," he said.

The addition of Pena leaves the D-Backs stretched a bit thin with four players on the bench. They have eight relievers out of the 'pen.

"I don't see us doing this [as a] long-term type of thing," Melvin said. "We really did want to see him here and we got a nice look at him last night. I know that he can be an effective guy here."

Mixing it up: With the absences of Craig Counsell (disabled list) and Jeff DaVanon in Wednesday's lineup, Melvin chose to place Chad Tracy in the No. 2 hole. It served as the sixth time Tracy has hit second this season.

"He's [hit] two, three, four, five," Melvin said. "I don't want to get him too comfortable with his spot. So he'll move around, and he is a guy that can move around. He had a lot of success in the two-hole last year."

Tracy has hit third the majority of the season.

The Buck stops here (for a day): Dallas Buck, the D-Backs' third-round pick in last month's First Year Player Draft, was in town Wednesday to meet with Arizona officials and team physician Michael Lee.

Buck, a 6-foot-2 right-hander out of Oregon State, likely will require Tommy John surgery, but the team and Buck want to make sure all the options are explored first.

"Just wanted to have us all in the room and talk about it at the same time and arrive at a decision," general manager Josh Byrnes said. "It's an important enough decision that we just want to put our heads together one more time and try to arrive at the right decision."

Playing long ball: Triple-A Tucson was busy on Tuesday as it easily defeated Portland 11-1 with the help of five home runs, a season high, in the first game of a doubleheader.

Top prospects Carlos Quentin and Chris Young each went yard in the first inning, Brian Barden and Robbie Hammock followed suit in the fifth and Chris Carter added one an inning later. The group combined for eight RBIs.

Prior to losing Game 2 of the doubleheader, 3-2, the Sidewinders had won 10 straight, tying a season high.

Up next: The D-Backs and Dodgers conclude their four-game set on Thursday at 6:40 p.m. MST. Brandon Webb (10-3, 2.52) will take the mound against southpaw Mark Hendrickson (4-10, 3.77). If this is true, the Dbacks would have to remove somebody from the 40 man roster as Quentin is not currently on it.

That's not an issue as the 40 man roster wasn't full. Even with Quentin, there are still two open spots.

Gambo and Ash said he is starting tonight and that Gonzo will get a day off. They said the D-backs want to play him the next 7 days to see is Green or Gonzo can be moved without loosing what they are giving the team right now. They said is is most likley to ensure that more specificly Green is moved they are not missing the guy getting on base since he has lost his pop. This also makes sence since Quentin is a right fielder. Ash mention that with Green gone and Gonzo's optioned most likely not being picked up we could see Quentin and Byrnes in the outfield next year with the team going after Carlos Lee who play left. I like that outfield. Then there would still be money to go after a Zito and Lilly. Can you imagine a rotation of Webb, Zito, Lilly, Enrique Gonzles and a fifth start to be names or Owings.

It'll be tough to logically sign Carlos Lee, Zito, and Lilly. They will all command top dollar. I know we have a ton of money to spend but I'd rather focus on pitching if we have to decide between a bat or an ace. Zito and Lilly would be unreal

I don't really like Lilly but he would be an upgrade to most of the guys we have now. And I want Juan Cruz to stay.

Young should come up next year to play center with Byrnes. He's ready to play and should do well in the majors. I like Byrnes but his hitting could just be a one year think like Clark last year.

Whatever happens it would just be nice to trade Gonzo and Green. Carlos Lee would be great. I would be ecstatic if the Suns can get him and Zito.

I think I am ready for Chris Young to split time with Eric Byrnes next year. Or possibly even get spot starts in LF. Ideally you would want three CF's playing the outfield anyway as they are the guys that cover the most ground.

Tracy has really disappointed me but I think CoJack will come around in the second half. And I love Stephen Drew.......

I love our young position players. I'm starting to think i wish we had a young stud third baseman however......

I can see Lee as getting some time at Small Forward, but where do you have Zito? I guess I will have to wait and she how his midrange jumper is before I see where I would like him to play. :D

If we spend $12 million a year on Zito, I'm going to kill myself. He's a flyball pitcher that walks a batter every other inning and can't get through seven innings per start. Add all those things and you get a complete disaster picthing half your games at Chase Field.

I'd rather that $12 million go to two of Tomo Ohka, Vicente Padilla, and Randy Wolf than one of Barry Zito.

Hopefully this is not a promotion to display his talents just before the trade deadline....

Tracy will be fine. Just as good or better than these prospects that are coming up. Give him a break. His numbers in the first half were actually better this season. His average is just down a little because he's still not that good against lefties, but he will improve. He's also been pitched too tougher this year since he's more known now after a good season last year(notice the K's). And don't forget that he really doesen't have much protection in the line-up...Gonzalez...eh.

You are right, why would we want a former Cy Young pitcher who has a lifetime ERA of 3.47 in the AL and who in his worst season was 11 and 11 and still pitched a season low(minus his rookie where he was up for only half the year) of 213 innings. Yup, he never works many innings. Man, a 28 year left hander with a lifetime 96 and 56 record would ruin this team.

Zito pitches in a pitchers ball park and has severely struggled the last few years. Doesn't going from '23 and 5' to '11 and 11' in just two seasons throw up warning signs? He also gives up more homeruns per year than he gets people to hit into double plays. Pitchers are more than wins and strikeouts. You put him at Chase field and he's Armando Reynoso

I don't care about wins, they mean next to nothing in determining the value of a pitcher unless your name is Joe Garagiola Jr. The Cy Young voting has become a complete joke (again voters foolishly looking at only wins) so to jduge him on that when he was probably the third or fourth best picther in the AL four years ago doesn't resonate with me. His ERA is mostly a result of Oakland Coliseum and the defense he has had behind him the last couple years.

And 213 innings isn't a lot for a guy who starts 35 games a season. I don't expect him ever to get hurt, bigger guys who top out at 88 MPH rarely do get injured, but a true #1 gets you over 250 innings in 35 starts which is a number Zito has never approached.

I do see how he has struggled other than the 11 and 11 year and many great pitchers have had bab years. Look at Clemens in the mid 90's. He stunk and won a few Cy Youngs a few years later. Zito's ERA was still in the 3's every other year and and had a winning record. To say he would be a Reynoso is very drastic. I do not think he is a gamble.

Clemens problems were because he was a selfish jackass and decided to show up into camp fat and worthless. It wasn't until he rededicated himself that he found success again. Zito's problems are far different.... Again, he has had some fantastic defense behind him and he is a flyball picture pitching in a pitchers park. He's a one pitch pitcher and if his curve isn't on he's done for

Oh i disagree.....I was pleasantly surprised when he "over-achieved" last year and i saw the potential to develop into a good/great contact hitter. But it was his work ethic that made me think that not his natural talent or swing. IIRC his minor league career was quite undistinguished. Now I am getting a little worried that pitchers have adjusted to him and all the hard work in the world isn't going to allow him to overcome it.

For the record i hope im wrong. But hes not even on the same planet as Jackson, Drew, Young, and Quentin talent wise and minor league production wise. He has obviously done it at the major league level, which the others havn't, but i get worried when third year players are not significantly improving from the year before......
