2 million bucks an episode. That's why they canceled that show.

Im sorry but how and the hell does it cost that much for the show? It didnt seem all that elaborate IMHO?

Also if a show is doing VERY well in ratings and a season is only about 13-15 episodes that seems like small pennies to me?

On top of that they had to know or have an idea of production costs before they even start the show. Especially for a show like Rome. So why even make it to beguin with if you know the budget is going to be more then you can chew?

They make these multi-character, sweeping storyline period shows that ultimately they cancel because of the massive $$$.

But they are all awesome....I'll take what I can get. I hope they keep it up!

IMO they just shouldnt make them. I dont see the point in a show that lasts 3 seasons at most. Rating must not what be what they hope or IMO they wouldnt drop them.

I'm still pissed they cancelled this show. As soon as they did, we cancelled HBO. That'll show them... God I hate you HBO.

With Carnivale and Deadwood both running 3 seasons or less, it makes the show that much better. All of the season were high quality and arguably top 10 greatest seasons in television.

None of the stories were repeated, the characters never got stale, and they all ended with us wanting more. Which is what you're supposed to do.

I appreciate the time they were aired because I got entertained to a level I usually don't with other shows.

I can now say that Dexter has reached that plateau for me.

I just started watching it. I'm about 1/2 through season 1.

How many seasons did it go, and did it end with things being wrapped up, or was the ending a surprise and they didn't really "finish" it? I guess I'm asking if the finale was written as such or if it was supposed to come back the following week and didn't.

(also, I haven't read this thread for fear of spoilers).

2 seasons and it didn't really wrap things up

So, not entirely unsatisfying?

Entirely satisfying close to the season, but not to the series..in fact, it makes you angry seeing a glimpse of where they were heading and knowing you'll never get there.

One of my all time favorite shows.

I watched both season from Netflix. It was good but certainly no Rome.

Rome was good, but was disappointingly inconsistent. A great 2nd season followed a so-so 1st season.

Deadwood, Carnivale and Rome are the HBO Trinity--and all 3 were canceled before their time.

Okay, WOW! Rome's first season, um, INCREDIBLE. Not sure where the inconsistent comes from? Could you elaborate on that? Agreed in the great second season. Also, Rome sadly was not cancelled before its time. See the spoiler below.

Rome is my second favorite show of all time. Great historical drama. Oh, and Deadwood and Carnivale rocked too.

The second season of Rome ended with the Pax Romana, decades upon decades of peaceful rule. Yeah, if that ain't a button to a series, I don't know what is ;) I mean, you'd have to skip until Augustus Caesar was an old man and the family 'squabbles' really heated up to find good drama again, and that would have been reaching too far.

Yeah but Stout they could have made it a Roman era soap opera. All kinds of crazy non historical stuff could have happened. And a lot actually did happen But Agrippa was a huge part of it.

They quelled some tribes in Spain that they couldnt ever seem to beat (Augustus tried and failed at being the general and Agrippa cleaned up as usual.

Augustus almost dies several times at a young age and once he gave Agrippa his seal in case he died. That caused an uproar in the family and Augustus's wife supposedly poisoned a cousin Augustus favored in hopes her son from a different marriage would be the heir.

Lots of action in the east Agrippa had to fight a bit and in the area now known as yugoslavia.

Could have all been written for a long time.

And you just answered why it shouldn't be done. It was a crazy-wild historical drama, but it never descended to the soap opera level; to keep it going it would have of necessity had to descend to that level. No thanks. I'll take a shorter, higher quality show.

I dunno there was a ton of excitement in Augustus's life. Would have been great to continue it.

Sorry, Stout, but the first season of Rome was incredibly boring to start off. It ended great, but it took 5 or 6 episodes to really find it's strides. Deadwood was great from the get-go. Carnivale took a few episodes to get going as well.

Don't mistake my post for me not liking Rome, because I did like it.

I haven't seen Rome yet, but I thought Deadwood was so slow in the first couple of episodes that I never even finished the first DVD. And I love westerns.

Carnivale on the other hand had me right from the start. I just finished S1 last night.

As an aside, Management's voice is clearly a woman's (to me). It really bugs me that Management is supposed to be a male with that voice.

Well, I disagree with both ya bums ;)

I will never agree that season 1 of Rome started too slow, but I do have a vested interest in the series. Ditto for Deadwood, and I didn't even care about that series to start with. I figured it would just be over-the-top obscenities, but damn if it isn't quality TV.
