I haven't seen Rome yet, but I thought Deadwood was so slow in the first couple of episodes that I never even finished the first DVD. And I love westerns.

Wow, you're definitely the first person I've ever heard that from. The 4th episode of that series is one of the most brilliant hours of television EVER. The ending is so good, it still amazes me to this day.

Carnivale on the other hand had me right from the start. I just finished S1 last night.

As an aside, Management's voice is clearly a woman's (to me). It really bugs me that Management is supposed to be a male with that voice.

Funny thing is, the voice actually IS a woman. It's Linda Hunt, who was the short saloon-keeper in Silverado. Just a bit of trivia for you.

I thought you would love this show...it seems right up your alley.

As an aside to your aside, I didn't hear it as a woman's voice..my wife did. We solved it via IMDB...I was wrong. it is a woman doing the voice.

Who are your favorite characters on the show?

I felt the same way. I've only seen the first two episodes...it was just hard to get into. My wife felt the same way. My father in law loved the show, and we have all the seasons to watch still in our DVD case...someday we'll pick it up again, but finishing the wire right now.

Yup. I thought that's who it was. Know it wasn't her that did this voice, but I always see the costume designer in The Incredibles when I hear that voice...I think because she looks like Hunt. :)

Still, I hate that they used her voice. It's creepy, but it's feminine.

do we end up seeing Management in S2? I wonder if they did it because they've got him as a midget (the voice actually sounds a little -- no pun intended -- "midget-y").

I never made it to ep 4. I think I maybe watched half of three. It just didn't grab me.

Hmm. That's tough. It might be Sampson--he's got a lot of secrets, but he doesn't seem to be keeping them for any malicious reasons. He's got the interest of his people (the carnies) as a priority, but is conflicted in his subservience to Management.

I hope they'll go a little bit deeper into his deal in S2.

Yes, you'll get a brief look at management

No, he's not a midget but once you see him you can understand why he has a screwed up voice

You'll love season 2. The pace of the storyline gets a lot quicker and there are quite a few twists along the way.

Good call...really like Sampson.

I also, for some damn reason, like Stumpy. He's an idiot, but I like him. Jonesy is also a favorite, but I have to say Sampson is my favorite character.

All of them are so interesting though...one of the things I loved about this show.

Yeah, I like Stumpy and Jonesy, too. Flawed and tragic.

Ironically enough, the voice of the female costume designer in The Incredibles was the male director, Brad Byrd!

Also, DVD viewing is the best way to watch TV, IMO. I may even hold off on watching Lost until the DVDs come out. (I'm probably not strong enough to not watch weekly, but I wish I was).

Finished it last night. Wow. That show is like TV crack for me. I'm very sad it's over. It's probably my second favorite show of all time.

What was the deal with it anyway? It's not like cable shows need huge viewership to stay afloat.

I saw something coming with Sophie. As soon as we found out that she was Brother Justin's daughter, I figured something was up. What I can't figure out is why she didn't manifest any of her "powers" previous to his death. Scudder was alive when Ben was performing his healings, and Justin was doing his thing when Management was alive, too.

Also, poor Jonesy. I liked that guy a lot. So weak in some ways (when it comes to women--I loved the scene where he figures out what's eating at Libby and he joyfully says, "That's the first time I've ever been right when I've guessed what a woman is thinking."

Loved the way the Carnivale family came together in New Canaan despite some of there own problems that threatened to tear them apart. Even Burly rejects Lyla's attempted coup at that point.

In addition to the more general arch of the next few seasons, I would have loved to see where they took the "prophesy" of Lowds when he said to Lyla "You'll be seeing me soon enough--in the flesh."

Damn. I miss it already. :(

Glad you finished it and feel the way I do.

The deal with it, I think, was it was requiring an incredibly high cost to shoot. Travelling period piece with several cast members all important to the story.

Simply an outstanding show.

They should have featured more midgets. That would have cut the costs in half.

Totally agree with one exception, Lost. I need a week to read/think about stuff and to let it sink in before the next episode. It's the only show I keep up with. Everything else I either wait until I have a few shows saved up on the DVR or wait for the DVDs.

I think I'll tackle this series after I crank out The Wire.

1 million an episode. That's a pretty big amount for a show with no ad revenue. It's what sunk Rome and Deadwood as well.

Here's another question:

How was the tatooed man that Ben kept seeing? It wasn't Justin, even though later he got the tattoos. Management told him he was seeing The Usher, but the Usher was Brother Justin.

Any ideas?

I had a theory for this, but that was long ago. I need to get the DVD's to rewatch. This was an amazing show. I miss the hell out of it.

Ditto...I'd have to refresh myself on that...I did recall having some garbled theory of my own.

I'm just glad I wasn't missing something obvious, then. I guess it was just one of those things that went unanswered.

Thanks.

I always thought it had it's roots in reincarnation somehow. The tattooed man is evil personified, and when Justin finally assumed that mantle completely, he essentially became the tattooed man. Just a theory, but it seems like an easy one--although it's probably a lot more complicated than that.

I look at it as Ben seeing the tattooed man at first simply as an omen. Evil is in the world and growing in power. Once Justin becomes that man, Ben starts actually seeing him. I think it all comes back to the simple idea of good vs. evil--and how the show personifies it. And not only in regards to Ben and Justin--management and Skudder both have their roles as well.

I think you're probably right in general, but Ben was seeing Justin and the tatooed man alternately--before and after Justin's rise to power.
