Good on JG to refrain from announcing the starter for the Redskins. I mean Commanders. Split the reps and start one, but have the other ready to go. It's not like we're gonna win the game either way.

It might give us some suspense. Bettors gonna bet!

That comment meant their was a disconnect in what the player wanted and what the Cardinals wanted to pay him.

Ok. That doesn't mean that he would sign with the Cardinals for $2 million.

Every player makes contract demands. He literally was almost signed by another team.
You just must want to be argumentative.

Almost signed by another team??? You know that how?

I’m sure Blough wanted 8 mill from another team too. Guess what, he’s probably vet minimum for the Cards.

That they gave Colt every chance to get his elbow right? They probably felt his overall experience was worth giving him a shot. At least they cut bait and found a hopeful replacement, before the 1st game.
Except that really wasn’t the plan if they tried to sign dobbs in the offseason but thought it would be better not to pay what he wanted until we had to trade for him and pay what he wanted PLUS give up draft picks.

You almost have to keep David Blough on the roster now with this offensive line. He also wasn't complete garbage in the preseason I guess.

I would love to see Tune play but I'm guessing they will go Dobbs in week 1. Yes, Tune isn't ready, but who gives a bleep at this point. At least it would make watching the game interesting to see how he develops.

Moved on why? To save a whole $1.5m in cap space while eating $3.5m in dead money? With those numbers you keep him around and see what he has.
I guess I don't see it as the hallmark of a good organizational plan to "keep him around and see what he has" when it comes to your starting QB spot. Especially when it only costs you 3.5 mil. Hell, they already have 42.7 mil in dead money, 3.5 more shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Gardner Minshew cost $3.5 million this year and I was all in on signing him to be the stop gap. I also wanted Jacoby Brissett, but he signed for $8 million, so I get why he wasn't sought after. Never thought Colt would make it through even a partial season after all of history of injuries.

I don't. Just like they don't know what the actual contract demands was.

Cool story, bro. Add more snark, that really improves your argument.

Maybe he wanted more...Jeebus same usual cast running with this speculation.

All of this talk is literally arguing over how the deck chairs should be arranged. Do you think that signing Dobbs then adds any more wins this year? Do you want the Cardinals to win more? I want them to suck bad.

This might be shocking to you, but I'm going to guess coaches want to see players on the field before they make a decision about their career.

Ain't nobody here that manages people ever sacked a guy before they experienced working with him first.
The team has an entire department responsible for scouting current NFL players. They do so by studying game tape and making informed decisions. Teams also do this for their own players. When new coaches come in, they scout the players on their roster to see who want moving forward. If you are suggesting Gannon and Monti can't make a determination on a 36 year old NFL vet QB who has started 6 games over the past two seasons...I mean...that to me is very far fetched.

I don't necessarily agree with this either. If this saves us even more cap space and he wasn't the guy, then why not do it?

They weren't going to bring in a 6-10M dollar backup with Colt on the roster. And they traded for Dobbs, who they think is an upgrade over Colt. (I'd assume)

I'd argue that this speaks more that they have a plan, then not.
Uh no. This is the epitome of changing your plan at the last second. To argue otherwise is kinda silliness.

Their plan was to see if the guy who was clearly broken would be healed by game time? Give him almost all of first team reps? And wait until 10 days before the season and hope another team will be willing to trade you the alternative you want whose price you didn’t like before and for whom you have to give up a draft pick? Look, this move isn’t a disaster, but if it’s indicative of their “planning” I have very little hope for the future.

This season is probably a tank job, or at least the NFL equivalent of it.

For the "they wanted to see what they had" crowd I think it is a fair question to ask why they were interested in Brissett and Dobbs if they were committed to McCoy?

How do you bring in a QB?

1. Free Agency. Most good backups are going to cost you, and any QB worth their salt will go somewhere where they can parlay their play into a shot at starting. Would you pick the Cardinals if you were in this camp? I wouldn't.

2. Trade. Costs draft picks obviously. Teams generally hold players around and trade them in the preseason once they know how their roster is going to shake out.

3. Draft. The Cardinals used this avenue and got a fairly promising player. But you're kidding yourself if you think it's common to find a good player in the fifth round and the most likely scenario is that Tune is going to suck bad and so will Clark.
False premise. You have Tune and Blough, who both provide options:

Tune - young guy who has shown a lot of poise and a good grasp of the offense. Throughout the preseason he hasn't looked out of place. He's at least a possible starter in the future.

Blough - nothing special, but he can start an NFL game and not embarass himself. His career has mostly mirrored that of Dobbs.

We should have rolled with what we had - prove me wrong Dobbs!

Actually the Browns are now on the hook for $500K of dead money from his signing bonus. So the Cardinals got a 25% off deal from the QB clearance aisle.

i am just sitting here thinking:

after an entire offseason where the team knew its QB1 wouldnt be ready for week 1: the Cards are likely to start a QB in the season opener that they just acquired for a late round pick and hasn't been in camp with them until yesterday or so.

its kinda mind blowing

LOL at evidence. He has presented NONE.

No we are saying is that everything you are saying is speculation that you treat as fact.

It's called logic @kerouac9

Maybe he really likes living in Cleveland and would only sign with the Cardinals for $4 million. He then took the Cardinals offer of $2.5 million back to Cleveland who then said "We can't match that, but we will give you the security of guaranteeing the contract." That is a plausible scenario, but if I was to treat it as fact it would....<drumrolls> speculation.
So the guy who has made less than $5.5 million in his career likes living in Cleveland - CLEVELAND!! - so much that he would only come to Arizona if they paid him an extra $2 million? That is certainly a scenario. Not a plausible scenario, but a scenario.

You’re right. He likely wanted more to go an equally inept organization where he would’ve been a definitive backup rather than come to an equally inept organization where he would’ve started games until kyler came back. That’s definitely not speculation on your part defending a historically awful organization . . . as usual.

Look, I’m not mad at the move. It will make us worse. But I’m looking at it from the analyzing the front office strategic moves perspective and it’s just another small wart on the back of other small warts that are starting to accumulate. Are you saying the front office is genius for waiting to trade for dobbs at a later date thereby costing themselves a draft pick and doing it so close to the season because they are trying to suck more? Are you saying that’s their strategy?

It's more likely that they start a 5th round rookie who only has 8 quarters of preseason football under his belt. If that makes you feel better. ;)

We drafted Tune for a reason. They had an idea obviously that Colt was toast and probably thought Tune was more ready than he is. Having faith in a 5th rounder is not very smart.

This is all a bit bizarre.

That's fair with Minshew. I'm not caring blame any which way, but it's all bizarre to me. I guess we'll see how it shakes out.
