We shouldn't have to. That isn't the same thing as "we won't have to". I think every internet and sports talk voice that's suggested we will have to has helped create this situation. It makes no sense to compensate another team when they WANT to get rid of their coach. But the narrative now is fairly well set, we probably will have to give up the Milwaukee pick. I hope we are smart enough to shop elsewhere, hire a coach that can develop these players without giving away assets.

What jumped out at me is that Bordow thought this might be the case.

Maybe the Suns should play it cool and call their bluff as some have suggested. It looks like the Suns are going to interview James Borrego, an assistant coach with the Spurs.

How so? You gave a thumbs up to a post that blatantly slings mud calling members of the board stupid and cancers.

And that thumbs up indicates you support the slinging of it, no?

How does that not show hypocrisy when you’re complaining of others slinging mud?

I thought about your argument for a millisecond.

Here is my decision.

yup... I'd start with our 2nd rounder and really hold the line firm there unless there becomes some kind of bidding war. And if it's just between us and the Bucks, I'd be very surprised if they offered their pick this year at 17 in a draft as good as this.

I don't think the Bucks could offer their 1st this year. Teams can't trade consecutive 1st round picks and since we own their 1st next year, with protection, that might keep them from offering theirs due to CBA rules.

I think the Bucks can offer their first round pick during the draft for Bud but I don't think the hiring process will last this long.

I've thought about a new way to soften the pain of compensation if the Suns trade the rights to the Bucks pick for Budenholzer.

It would be like trading Bledsoe for him. ;)

One thing I really like about Budenholzer that the Suns could use is how he got that team moving the ball when he took over. I can't recall the stats but when they won 60 games and had 4 All-Stars I remember reading about how he improved their ball movement quite a bit, taking on a Spurs type of offense where they made 3-4 passes each possession before a shot was taken. The Suns were one of the worst teams in the league when it came to assists per game last year. Having a legit NBA PG would help improve that but having a coach who had a good offensive that was centered around ball movement would help a lot also.

I was trying to find an article on it but I couldn't find the one that I recall. I did find this about "Bud Ball" though which helps highlight some of his influence as a coach.

Here's another from a few years ago that brings up how he's helped turn them into a legit contender...

They can't offer him their pick this year since they owe their pick next year to us. NBA rules state that you can't trade first rd picks away in consecutive years because of that idiot Ted Stepien.

Although, during the draft the Bucks could trade away their pick.

It would be great to see you posting on the Suns forum more.

For some reason I only seem to lurk, but I definitely will more.

That said, Budenholzer would be a grand slam for the Suns. Give up what it takes, because Coach Bud is an elite tactician, he is from Arizona, and his calling card is development + fitting players into his system (which is modern and free flowing).

I can definitely go further, but he is as good a hire/acquisition as the Suns can make and for all the right reasons. Imagine what he can do with TJ Warren, let alone Josh Jackson and/or DeAndre Ayton or Doncic.

He was key in helping develop Kawhi (along with Chip Engelland), DeMarre Carroll, Kent Bazemore, Taurean Prince, John Collins. He gets the most out of his hybrid forwards.

It's nice to hear. Most of the fans on the Suns forum want Bud as head coach. The problem of course is compensation... if the Hawks want to play hard ball.

Just thinking, perhaps a first round pick in the 2021 draft might be the best to convey.

The Heat pick in 2021 is not now protected. The Suns could protect it as easily as saying the Suns get the better of the 2021 draft picks. It is unknown how good the Bucks pick will be when conveyed so I'm a bit reluctant to trade it.

Of course the key is putting protection on the Heat pick in 2021.

It remains to be seen what the Hawks will ask for, but I see no reason the Suns shouldnt offer that Miami pick top 23 protected, or something similar. The caveat being, if it doesn't convert it turns into two 2nds. That has always seemed the most likely outcome, in my opinion.

If the Suns trade a first round pick for Bud, I like the idea of the 2021 Heat pick (top 23 protected) turning into second round picks if it doesn't convey.

However, I don't think it has a chance of happening. The Hawks will want a first round pick at some point in time. I'd just as soon make it where the Suns get the better of the two draft picks in 2021.

The Hawks will want everything we're stupid enough to give them. Hire JVG instead if they demand anything more than our extra 2nd round pick. Again, THEY DON'T WANT HIM! Why should we compensate them for doing what they want to do? We sucked so that we could get better, not so we could make it easier for the Hawks to improve.

And remember, nowhere am I saying we won't compensate them. We've made dumb decisions before, what's one more.

I think JVG would be a poor choice. The Suns needs someone who can covert some of their modern talent into a system that takes advantage of their skills. Not to mention someone who has a development background, which is not JVG.

We still do not know the terms to which the Hawks permitted Bud to meet with the Suns. For all we know, it could have been with the offer of Bud quitting, forfeiting his salary, and signing a new contract with the Suns only. It could have been to meet before working out a contract with the Suns if the two teams agree on a deal for him.

Either way, if you are a Suns fan who wants Bud as your coach, the rebuild is over. The move will be to develop the young talent and to sign veterans who can help this team win some games. In that scenario, why not be willing to move a late draft pick (which could convert into two 2nds), for the best candidate you can possibly acquire/hire?

Way too risky. Suns need to heavily protect that pick, especially for a coach.

Actually I thought this was the less risky option because the Suns would have the option of their own pick or the Heat pick in 2021.

I'm with you.

I'm still playing the "what if" game if the Suns sent compensation to the Hawks.

If it makes everything move easily send them the Toronto second round pick but I think they will balk and try to stretch the hiring out. So let's send them another future second round pick as well of little consequence.

It would be an awfully good sign if Sarver goes along with paying a coach 7 mil. I'd like to see the deal close soon - like today! I expect McD to do a decent job of limiting the compensation to Atlanta.

What if they both end up in the lottery? Now you just gave up a lotto pick for Bud.
