In a nut shell the deal he wants would make sure he got all his money from his rookie contract even if he was cut early and if he was cut early it would let him go get another contract from another team why still getting the money from his rookie deal from Arizona.

That is my understanding of the deal.

I myself see this type of deal as a way to get off a team I did not want to play for but still get the money.

My understanding too.

Cards don't want this as a precedent.

KC seems to have got around the issue with a balloon payment of the bonus.

So Jonathan Cooper who, IMO, had no business whatsoever being the #7 overall pick in any draft has so much confidence in himself that he is afraid of what might happen financially if he gets cut and picked up by another team? Geez.:bang:

Looks like the FO needs to take some of the blame here.

I fully support stance on offset language. Never has it been given nor should the team set a precedent for this agent and draft picks moving forward. Double dipping, if cut, is complete garbage, IMO.

That being said, PFT is reporting that the front office took a long time to engage Cooper and his agent in talks

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/26/report-no-middle-ground-for-cardinals-cooper/

The sticking point is, as we’ve reported, offset language in the fully-guaranteed contract. Without it, Cooper can (if he’s cut in the next four years) collect the full amount of his Cardinals contract and keep every dollar he makes elsewhere. With it, the Cardinals would get a credit for any money Cooper earns from a new team over the balance of contract with Arizona.

Part of the problem is that the Cardinals waited a long time to engage Cooper in serious talks. Up until a few days ago, there had been no discussions.

I'll give Keim and Co. some latitude because they've been very active in free agency, trades, and other draft signees, but if this lingers on, this will cause Cooper to lose valuable practice time and delay his transition into the NFL.

This is getting stupid... Agents are arguing for the sake of arguing... Almost every player taken above cooper has the offset language in the contract. Cooper is not starting off on the right foot with the fans or team... Slotting was supposed to end this bologna.

Now that we have the possibility of Massie or Levi kicking in to Guard (if Winston and Potter win the battles, as I expect), let Cooper hold out.

We also have Earl Watson. Im actually really excited for him. You know the top Guards in the NFL are mostly mid rounders (due to the fact all guards get drafts mid rounds). Theres no reason Watson cant be better than Cooper. Sounds strange, but Guards are funny to develop.

We dont need Cooper. We need a healthy, and talented LT and RT. We have a good C and will have probably a good RG no matter who gets that spot.

Best check yourself kid, dont go getting uppity just because you think you deserve to get paid. Havent played a snap in the NFL yet.

Not a good way to start off the new regime.

More things change, more things stay the same.

Stupid. To have so much time to get something like this done, and the process being so streamlined this is unacceptable.

This is NOT how you shed the "Same Ol' Cardinals" and "Cheap" label.

To say signing this kid is not important is crazy. Worst offensive line in the league last year, and without a doubt the worst interior line in the league.

Again, to say he is not needed is just not true.

Very Frustrating as a fan to see this happen.

All fine, but the Cards are not the only team that's refused to take part in this 'double dipping' scheme devised by agents.

Yup, this seems silly. 14 mil contract. No problem. 10 mil guaranteed, no problem.

Sounds like his agent wants to double-dip IF he gets cut in his last year.

If I'm SK, I hold firm and not give in to this.

I never understood this from rookies. I would not miss one second of my rookie camp. His big payday is the next contract, which he only gets if he's good, which he only gets if he knows what he's doing, which he only knows if he gets his fat arse to training camp.
Seems simple enough.

These first round rookie contracts seem like prenups, don't they?

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I think Cooper's salary/ bonus should start diminishing when he misses camp and so forth. I can't help it, but I get upset when a player starts betting against himself.

Gee. I'm not frustrated with the organization at all. I'm frustrated that the #7 overall pick in the draft is so worried about what might happen financially if he gets cut.

Can't be done. He has no contract. Nothing from nothing is nothing.

Indeed, such language would actually incentivize the player to get cut in the last year of the deal. Then he could collect the full amount of his salary from the Cardinals, and whatever salary he could get from another team. No contract should ever give a player incentive to perform poorly or get cut.

That's a really good point.

Like it or not it is still on Keim to get the deal done on time..

Dont let he prisoners run the asylum.

What the Cardinals are asking for is no different from what the Chiefs asked of the #1 pick. And same goes for most top 10 picks.

Do not cave to these punks. Cooper is the one without the cash. He will come home soon enough.

I don't like the idea of a guard, of all positions, doing a Kelly Stouffer.

Would the Cardinals retain his rights next season if there is no agreement to a contract?

I'd like the idea of just letting him sit out the season with this attitude.
