If this is not a sign of ignorance, greed, and a sure work stoppage I don't know what is.

I have no sympathy for players in this same situation. That includes Mr. Lutui. All the players knew what they were getting into, and if they didn't then shame on them for not informing themselves about there own goose who lays golden eggs.

Can I really have sympathy for a player who says "Well, I didn't know this whould be how things worked out..........." ? Seriously ? You make at the very least 6-figures, and can take the time to learn about where that comes from, or to prepare, and vote to make sure that your money tree doesn't die ?

Nope. Can't do it. Like in this case, Jackson and McNiel are turning their noses up at 3 million+. That is enough for me and most people to live our entire lives on. That is the equivalent of making 50K per year for the next 60 years.

No sympathy. NONE. They know what the situation is, they are part of their own union, and there plight is they have to except 3 milllion for one year.

TELL YOUR STORY WALKING.

They are pro bowl players, yet they only make 3M per year for one year? BS.

This is why the NFL needs guaranteed contracts so we stop seeing this BS.

I agree with you for the most part, but in the case of Duece, he just fired his agent and we really have no idea what is going on. If he signs quickly now, then it could have been his agent the whole time.

As far the the high salaries and the players always wanting more, it remain this way for two reason. First, the life expectancy is really low. If you are going to take 30 to 40 years off your life, you deserve to get paid for it. Second, as long as the fans are willing to pay the high prices, the players will fight for a few more dollars more. We are the suckers in that case.

I don't care if they are Peyton Manning. They knew what they were getting into this offseason.

They should take the 3 million that they knew they were getting for over 2 years now, and be happy with it.

Players sit out in the name of business, and now owners play by the rules and utilize the tools given to them.....in the name of business.

Complaining about making 3 million in one year, under the rules agreed upon by the union ? BS.

Guaranteed contracts ? BS x 2. For every underpaid, over productive player there is a JeMarcus Russel who cashed in and checked out.

I was taught, and told that you earn things in this country, and there are no guarantees. If the players don't want to take the risk, then I am sure there are some out of work players that will gladly do so.

#1 - They know the risk they are taking, and if they don't then it is there own fault for not knowing what they spent 15 year working towards.

#2 - The money that these players make in one year. Even the min. salary is enough to set up anyone in a great financial situation. Not to mention the ones making 1, 2 or 3 million in a single year who with the proper finacial responsibility are set for life. The rest of the nation is supposed to be finacially responsible with much, much, much less. I have no sympathy for players whom blow all their money and never think of life after football.

Second, as long as the fans are willing to pay the high prices, the players will fight for a few more dollars more. We are the suckers in that case.

Hockey lost a season a few years back. It was an inconvenience to everyone at the time. Yet, things were good around the country, and the NHL was going bankrupt.

This is a completely different situation. The economy is horrific, and will continue to be when the 2011 season rolls around. Not to mention this is America's game.

To lose out on the season entirely, the NFL will lose massive amounts of fans. Die Hards will be Die Hards, but still there will be a fall out.

It is easier to be snapped into the reality that you are a sucker, when you the thing you are over-paying for already is then payed for and not delivered.

Heck, I even have a backup plan. World Cup Rugby 2011! It only comes once every 4 years!

Virtually impossible to hand out guaranteed contracts to 53 players a year. That isn't even including the other 30 or so players that play during the off season and preseason, which means every year you have to cut 30+ players and still have to pay them. Unless there was a farm system like baseball fully guaranteed contracts isn't even close to do-able.

Contracts inherently designed to be a guarantee. Where else can you sign a contract and then have someone essentially rip it up? You'd be sued.

I believe that the league can find a way if they wanted to. You can offer non guarantee contracts to 7th rounders and UDFA for example.

Teachers ? Govenor of NJ, defaulted on the original contract he had with the teachers union, and pushed another contract in its place.

It happens more than you would think. You CAN sue, but will you, and can you afford to ? Cause if you sue, you are fired.

And again, these are grown men. They know what they are signing up for. Are they devoid of self-responsibility ? I know they (atheletes) are deviod of self-responsibility in regards to abiding by the laws that the rest of us have to live by, but to say they don't have to have responsibility for thier own bodies, and finances is a stretch.

I have learned in this country, what people tell you, and what actually happens are two completely different things. There are no guarantees, even when it is guaranteed.

That is a very good point actually and ive always found it a tad strange that the club is expected to pay for players it decides not to take on.

Incidentally do you know roughly how much these type of players get paid?

Not in your scenario. They aren't going to be fired because they are in a union.

So owners should be the only ones making the rules and athletes should have no say? If owners decided that they are only going to pay each player 10k per year and pocket the rest of the money, you would be ok with that too?

I have learned in this country, what people tell you, and what actually happens are two completely different things. There are no guarantees, even when it is guaranteed.

Maybe that's why things are so screwed. When guarantees aren't guaranteed, then the only thing that talks is money.

There is no way in the world a union will work out a deal where only half of their players get guaranteed contracts and the other half do not. You create the same exact situation as we have right now. Its the haves versus the have-nots, with the have nots causing an issue. It doesn't fix the problem you just widen the gap between middle class and high class.

Tell that to the tenured teachers that are being let go, right now, as we speak, in NJ.

So owners should be the only ones making the rules and athletes should have no say? If owners decided that they are only going to pay each player 10k per year and pocket the rest of the money, you would be ok with that too?.

Big picture ? The owners are just as skewed and wrong as the players. They complain about stadium costs, and running the team costs, etc., etc. They more than anyone should know the risk they are taking on when buying a club, and that there is no guarantees on a return on the investment. Furthermore, the owners want more money, period. At all times, at all costs, and by any means necessary. Who cares who gets caught in the cross fire, that is what they have PR departments for.

As for the topic at hand? The rules post-salary cap were there for everyone to see. The owners compromised, and "gave in" to players demands at the last labor agreement, but also put the post-salary cap rules in place, so that when they went back to the table at the beginning of this offseason they had leverage. Every player had access to this knowledge, and they made the decision to not comprimise with the owners and go capless this year.

At that point it is what it is. The player voted to be in the situation they are now in. Thus there is a select group of players that went from UFA's to RFA's sucks for them but it is a business. You think an owner is going to give out a huge contract to players when they can get away with a non-guaranteed one year tender ? Hell no.

Any why not, I seem to remember a certain MLB for the Cardinals who even though "loved the team he was with" signed for big money elsewhere in the name of "business".

It seems players like to use "its a business" as a convenient truth to justify blowing town for a higher pay check, or holding out against a team for more money. But, when the owners utilizes their leverage they are cheap, and unfair.

Maybe that's why things are so screwed. When guarantees aren't guaranteed, then the only thing that talks is money.

Agreed. 100% but until people really buy into that notion we are prisoners to the almighty dollar. Yes, you can fight it, but unless you have numbers (people behind you) it is all for not.

You mean to tell me that they union won't agree with the 'If your not drafted, you don't get a guaranteed contract?'

I don't understand why this wouldn't get passed the union.

And what does the team do when the player tanks it as they no longer need to care ?

This is the salient point.

They negotiated the deal but they only want to honor the parts that for them while requiring teams to honor all parts for the agreement.

Just like the players screaming about not being a free agent after 4 years. They didn't consider that while rubbing their hands in glee over possible big paydays for a few. They assumed they would be one of the few and the rest could go hang, now they are part of the rest its no longer fair.

Have-nots?
Minimum NFL salaries are $300K plus for players with no experience.

I know it's relative, but it's difficult for the average joe ( ;) ) making about 50K per year (non-guaranteed) to have any empathy.

I am old school and still think you live by the contract you sign. I do not care how good or bad you played during the contract the contract still speaks for itself. I never see a player who had a bad season wanting to give back to the owners any money.

The Cubs 3rd baseman Aramas Rameriz is batting around .160 the lowest in the majors. He is making 17 million a year. He has had 6 great years where he earned his money but now the Cubs are living by the contract no matter how bad he is playing.

Owners by changing contracts in the middle of its term have created a monster that will never go away. Our team once lived by contracts which is partially why we sucked. Other teams were not living by contracts. Unless all teams live by contracts then no team cannot afford to be old school and still be competitive.

Don't forget the owners who are guaranteed $100 million in revenue after player salaries even if they go 5-11 every year.

There is around 3.85 BILLION in money available for players. I don't fault any of them for trying to get as much as they can.

Maybe I should post a picture of the poster boy for a franchise that made tons of money without ever producing?

Works both ways.

Every sport needs to be like golf. If you don't perform you don't get paid.
