Next man up doesn't mean that the Defense doesn't skip a beat.
In the context it's been used yes it does.

Man what a brutal loss. I feel so bad for Dockett, absolutely devastated, almost like a friend or family got hurt. Guy is a fearless player that always leaves his heart and soul on the field. It's going to be weird going to battle without him. I am going to rock the 9-0 jersey to all the home games in his honor this year.
I'm sad for 9-0. He must be feeling a real punch in the gut right now.
Wow. Tough week for you bro.
I can't believe fans think Dockett, DWash, and Dansby can be replaced by Frostee Rucker, Kevin Minter, and Larry Foote with the AZ defense not missing a beat. It'll be fun to watch to see if they can but..... And if they're top 5 again this year Bowles will be Asst coach of the year.
Cosign!
I'm with you for the most part but I'm drinking tons of Koolaide and think the trifecta can be 85% of our losses.
I'm with YOU for the most part. might as well drink the Koolaide while it's still flowing.
truthfully, I think the D takes a MAJOR step back, but I'm hoping the O takes an equally MAJOR step forward to take the beast of burden off a little.
I'd be with you but I don't have any faith in our patchwork offensive line. 2.2 and 2.8 yards per carry rushing first two preseason games while our opponents are over 5 in both. Maybe they're built for pass protection but so far they've not looked efficient at all.
i hear ya... I just can't go to the darkside this early in the season.

DWeed does something DUMB and is gone. Dansby takes more money and leaves and Dockett gets hurt. I can understand the Dansby and Dockett scenarios but Washington is pure stupidity that deserves a lot of angerI still find it hard to believe that anyone thinks this defense will be the same after losing Washington, Dansby and Dockett.
I looked through the DWeed thread and it is nothing but anger towards DWeed for ruining our season.
Yes, why the hell not. DWeed does something DUMB and is gone. Dansby takes more money and leaves and Dockett gets hurt. I can understand the Dansby and Dockett scenarios but Washington... please!

This.I do too, but I feel like the majority of posters I've been seeing still believe this has a chance to be a top 5 defense. Replace one of those guys with someone not as good... maybe we don't miss a beat. but replacing all 3 of them with guys who have either never started (Minter) have been journeymen (Rucker) or are way past their prime and have been injured the last couple years (Foote) and you're looking at a D about to take a major step backwards.
I know everyone wants to laud our secondary, but even that's a little strange to me considering that Jefferson has never started, Johnson is average at best, Cromartie is coming off his worst year and got no takers in FA and HB is coming off injury. But even if those guys do meet expectations, without a front 7 dominating the way it did last year, that secondary is going to have to be FANTASTIC because we just can't bring the heat like we did last year with all the losses on D.

FWIW, the New York Jets have created a template for how to operate an exceptional defense with a surfeit of talent in the secondary and pedestrian players in the front seven.
The question that I have is whether our collective talent in the front seven can rise to the level of pedestrian. Campbell is an elite talent, and Dan Williams is an above-average nose, but after that--particularly considering that I doubt that John Abraham was throwing weights the last 3 or 4 weeks--who knows?
August 31st 6pm EDT will bring opportunities to find some potential replacements and depth to the defense. Every year there are some surprise cuts and this year will be no exception. Generally there are some bruised egos that find in themselves a re-dedication and a need to prove to the team cutting them, they made a mistake.
The only fly in the ointment will be are they willing to come to AZ. Fortunately the Cardinals do not carry the same reputation they had in previous years and after having a top 5 defense last season landing in AZ is a much more attractive gig.
Run stopping will still be there, its the pass D that is really going to suffer more then last year.
I thought many here believe we're gonna have a great secondary?
I get the craziness of losing 3 top players, but I don't think the season is over. Move some players over like Shaughnessy and get Rucker more involved, there is a chance to salvage losing DD.
Now the LB spots are another story. Minter injured is not a good thing, and Foote may not be the answer(he is looking good so far though) so covering TE is still going to be an issue. Run stopping will still be there, its the pass D that is really going to suffer more then last year.

It isn't. If Tyrann, Alameda and Abraham can get up to full speed quickly and the rest of the team stays fairly healthy, this defense could finish the season in the middle of the pack. And if our left guard starts to show us why we drafted him in the first place, our offense has a chance to be special enough to carry an average defense. That's more "ifs" than I'd like but they're all pretty reasonable "ifs".
Steve
So should we not be evaluating this roster by what we see in camp? This is Rod Graves talk, and I refuse to believe that things have gotten this bad.
