Daryl Washington’s suspension didn’t follow the usual path

While everyone involved is keeping very quiet regarding the situation, we’ve learned that Washington did not trigger a four-game suspension via three positive tests. As best we can tell, there was an initial positive test that was the result of a genuine mistake, followed by two additional violations unrelated to a positive test.

The other violations came from the league’s stringent requirements regarding the testing and/or treatment portion of the substance-abuse program. With the league still possessing full authority over the appeals process, it became even harder for Washington’s position to prevail.

As a result, the Cardinals currently have no concerns about Washington, and both sides believe the relationship will continue well into the future.

I thought it was pretty clear. Nobody here is judging him for smoking pot, we're judging him for doing something he is explicitly prohibited from doing and in so doing he's screwing his teammates and his fans. The act itself is inconsequential to most of us.

What he did is even worse for us Cards fans than if he had been on some other team. On just about any other team, he'd only be disappointing the fans for the first quarter of the season. Our season is usually over by game 8 so it hits us a lot harder.

Nope. Realistically, he becomes a risk because of his status with the NFL substance-abuse violation process.

DWash (who could fall off the wagon again and be suspended even longer the next time) is really no different risk-wise than injury-history players like Levi, Beanie or Toler.

Finally (with only anecdotal and no scientific evidence to back this up), weed may be less serious a medical or legal factor than heroin or meth, but a case could be made that overuse of marijuana does nothing to improve reflexes or for that matter make a dude eager to work out or spend more time (awake) in the film room.

Bottom line, DWash put the team in a position where he now becomes a "problem" - something extra to worry about at precisely a time when the team is turning a new page with a new regime.

No, he doesn't deserve to be shot, but this isn't a good thing.

Not everyone is created equal. Same goes with drinkers. Some people can drink every night without any real problems but that doesn't mean that alcohol doesn't carry consequences. My grandfather died at 90 after 75 years of smoking but I still wouldn't recommend it.

I've smoked for over 30 years. I agree with the smoking & driving but thats it.

Keep in mind that the 9% addictive rate is the lowest among all controlled substances, so the likely hood that you would experience a lot the what is listed is low.
