With the win today the magic number now drops to 98. It can go to 97 with a Cubs loss. We have no idea of knowing what will be the best outcome at the end of the year from this series between the two teams. So for now, go Cubs ha!

Root against Colorado and LA. I want the division.

Absolutely! I think the post season come September will boil down to a 6 team battle, consisting of our Dbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Cubbies, Reds and Cardinals...

With Washington the only team above .500 in the NL East

What does the number mean? Need 97 wins to make the playoffs?

Also, why is it when our AZ teams are doing well, one or 2 teams in the same division/conference are also playing well. Why can't AZ be in a division that they are 11.5 games ahead like the Nats! It always has to come down to the wire.

Magic number = number of games in the season +1 (163) less Dback wins and opponent losses.

97 is the magic number to clinch wild card spot. Any combo of Dback wins and Cub losses (or whomever is in the next spot) that total 97 from here on out means playoffs.

Unfortunately the Rockies won.... Again... They are a impressive 40-23! We are roughly 40% into the season now and the Rockies are on pace for a daunting 103-59 record. Ouch!

Fortunately some good came out of their win today, and that is the WC runner up Cubs lost, dropping the magic number again down to 96.

Fun fact, the Astros are on pace for a 114-48 record.

Rooting for the Rockies vs the Cubs. Want Chicago as far back as possible.

Lucky for you playing the Rockies is like going through a buzz saw

#95 with Cubs loss earlier.

Edit: 94 with tonight's win. Another 2 knocked off today! The Rockies are scary, and the Dodgers have the depth and money not too mention they will be buyers come July.

The rookies are scary. They are on what, a 7 game winning streak. Would live the dbacks to take the division but with the rookies continuing to play well, that's going to be hard.

We have a 8 game road trip coming up that is favorable, with 3 days off, 1 before each series. 2 Against Detroit, 3 against Philly, and 3 against the Rockies. Hopefully the first two can give us an opportunity to jump back into the division lead against the Rockies. There is also another week between now and the Rockies so hopefully that will be enough time to inject Pollock back into the lineup.

Although we don't play tomorrow, the number can drop with a Chicago loss to the Mets, and of course Dodger, and Rockies losses are always nice to!

Here are the D'backs magic numbers against each team in the NL. The magic number is the required number of D'back wins + losses by the given team for the D'backs to finish with a better record than the given team.

To make the playoffs they have to get the magic numbers of every other team in the NL West or 10 teams from the NL.

Nationals 100
Mets 91
Braves 89
Marlins 89
Phillies 84
Brewers 93
Cubs 93
Cardinals 92
Reds 91
Pirates 89
Rockies 100
Dodgers 99
Giants 85
Padres 84

Cubs and Rockies both lose today. Could not have asked for much more. (Although a Reds loss to the Padres would be beneficial)

Drops the magic number to 92, and a 1/2 gained in the West. Tomorrow we have Greinke on the mound so a great chance to chip away again.

Magic number is now at 89! What's even crazier is we have a 8 game lead as of tonight in the WC race over Chicago. The next closest teams being 9.5 games back STL and NYM. No other team is under 10!

We have a great opportunity ahead in playing the Phillies. Hopefully the D'Backs can seize it.

Crazy to even think about it. I mean this could happen.
