What is the magic number to have the best record in the NL?

It ranges from 97 for the Dodgers to 79 for the Phillies. There is no one magic number right now. Every team is mathematically still in contention.

**Edit - Dodgers lost today so the magic number for the Dodgers, Rockies and Nationals is 96 as they all have the same number of losses.

The key to the D-backs success will be if we can improve our play on the road, as has just begun.

As a team that should still be in playoff contention at the trade deadline, what moves if any do you see them doing?
They seem to be ok in most areas in my opinion. Maybe a bullpen arm or another outfielder but I wouldn't give up much for either right now.

If Pollock comes back healthy and ready to play, would you consider moving Tomas for another arm, or two? Anyone in the AL with an arm worth trading for?

Who would take his inflated contract? Maybe an AL team hard up for a DH? I wouldn't even count on that.

The D'Backs now have a 10+ game lead over every team in the WC race except Chicago, who we are still 8 games ahead of. The magic number has dropped down to 88, and we again will have a great opportunity to chip away at that tomorrow.

In the division race, we are still chasing Colorado who we are a 1/2 game back of, while being tied with the Dodgers.

Most of the sellers at the deadline are going to want prospects and/or will be looking to dump salary. I don't see a trade for Tomas happening in that situation.

I keep hearing we are 21-8 since Pollock went down. Best record in the Majors during that time. That is scary. Remember last year? That was the excuse for us sucking. We have basically the same players. What a turnaround.

The magic number dropped from 88 down to 86 today due to the Cubs loss combined with our win. Maybe today we go from 86 down to 84 :D

Maybe even tie the Rockies with a lot of luck! heh

Crazy stat. Every team in the AL is either in the playoffs or within 4.5 games of a wildcard spot. In the NL, the closest team to a playoff spot is 9 games back.

When I saw SF go up 5-3 over Colorado at the top of the 9th I was so excited. But the Rockies continued their winning ways. While yet again we weren't able to gain any ground in the west, we did in the playoff hunt knocking the magic number down to 85. Fangraphs now has us at a 84.2% chance of making the playoffs. This Colorado trip is clearly against a great team, so it will be a chance to see where we match up against the best. Let's see if we can rise to the occasion.

Take 2/3 from Colorado and I'll be a happy camper. Without question, the biggest series for this team in several years.

Hey if you'd like to learn more about this team in the midst of the best division race in baseball, you can go on MLB.com and read exactly NOTHING about them. :(

I don't know what to say about this team. We have been without Pollock again and it has not stopped this team. I know I rag on Yasmany's defense but last year he hit 31 homers and 83 RBI's. Yet without these guys we have the best record at this point in DBack's history. It is basically the same team Chip Hale had. Do we miss him yet? NO! This whole board went crazy about Gibby's lineups (the man obviously wasn't right) and then Chip made Gibby's lineups look sane. All I heard last year was "Chip's our guy" because he was from U of A. Who cares? He sucked as our manager no matter where he was from. Torey has righted the ship with basically the same players. He benched Peralta and Drury today who had 8 hits the night before and beats the Rockies with 10 runs. I think I will give him a chance, what do you think?
