Why do you hope he's wrong? Do you want to give him a 5th year player option?

The pros of giving him a max FAR outweigh the cons.

I just hope this just isn't about a player option but the suns have something else to gain...like a team option. But I could be dead wrong. The whole thing could be about a player option. I just hoped by giving Booker an early extension the suns could gain some leverage somewhere. If not all is well I suppose...We have him locked in for max and he should live up to his contract and exceed it.

I have hopes though that Bender or Chriss break out soon. Hopefully playing under a new coach and playing with Ayton will do something for them. But if that is the case they need to get paid too.

The only negotiation I could see would be that the Suns offer a five-year max deal with no PO option now. Or both will commit now to wait and do a deal next summer (regardless of injury or any unforeseen circumstances) and the Suns will give Booker his year 5 PO in exchange for more free agent capital. That would financially benefit Booker in that he could exercise the PO and get a new deal one year earlier. The cap will be much higher then. But he also has the security of it being a PO so he can choose not to exercise it if he has an injury or something.

That would give the Suns an additional $18 million in free agency money next summer per BSOTS. I think they already will have around $25 million. So that would put them in the $43 million category. That could be a good deal for Booker AND for the team.

LOL @ some of the people in here.

The Suns have sucked for most of the past decade because it was bought by a nickel-and-diming banker who knows nothing about running a sports franchise. And now you want them to nickel-and-dime the only star/potential superstar we've had in a long time? Because you want to support the same ******* franchise who brought us to our current lows?

Hint: Supporting the star of the franchise IS showing "loyalty to the organization." Support for our cheap, inconsiderate, and tactless management and ownership is NOT.
How true! How true! We'll find out shortly who the Suns want to be.

Right, and money actually grows on trees and we can all marry models who never age.

That's not how it works anymore. This is a PLAYER'S league, not a TEAM'S league.
I love that in the same post you state “money actually grows on trees” sarcastically and then essentially agree with the sentiment of give him everything he wants because “this is a players league not a teams league.” Do you not see how those sort of contradict one and other???

You keep saying Suns are paying for potential. I say they are paying for production.

#1. From December 29, 2016 to March 11 2017 the Suns were outscored by 103 points in the 413 minutes Booker didn't play. When he did play, they outscored their opponents by 7.

#2. Devin Booker in clutch situations (under 1 minute last season) - 75% on 3 pointers. 100% at the free throw line. 44.4% on total FGs trailing only Lebron James (45.2%) and Kyrie Irving (44.8%)

#3. Booker is the 4th youngest player in NBA history to reach 3000 points, behind only Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmello Anthony.

#4. Booker is the 3rd youngest player in NBA history to reach 4000 points, behind only Lebron James and Kevin Durant.

#5. At 21, Booker is already #28 on the Suns all time scorers. Projecting just 21 points a game for 4 seasons played out of 5 on this contract, he will sit at #5 at 26. I thoroughly believe he averages more than 21 points and doesn't miss an entire season. So entering his prime years I will project him at #2 or #3 all time.

#6. Last season's 24.9 points scoring average is good enough for #8 in Suns history. Only TC x2, Amare x2, Barkley x1, and Charlie Scott x1 currently sit ahead of him.

#7. Booker is already #10 on the Suns all time 3 point list. He will likely pass Marjele before this extension is over for #2.

#8. Booker has the 2nd most 30 point games in the first 17 games of a Suns season (Scott #1 with 8) and is tied with Amare with the most consecutive 30 point games (4)

All that is great. I doubt.

What’s Bookers winning percentage?

Except that is money that the team has, not money that they wish they had (hence money growing on trees).

Those stats are just stunning for a guy who just turned 21. The Suns need Booker a lot more than Booker needs the Suns. Screwing around with this is folly.
Why does negotiating have to equate to “screwing around with this?” You guys are all so black and white.

I think it's too late to go back and say they'll sign him next offseason. At this point the majority of fans are waiting on news of his extension and if the front office comes out and says they'll sign him next summer for maximum flexibility that will only bring on the questioning. We've been bad for too long at this point and most fans don't trust our front office, and with good reason, so trying to sell everyone on a deal happening later is a really tough sell. Especially when it's fairly clear that if the Suns struggle again this year, McD will be looking for a new job elsewhere. Then what would happen with Booker's extension?

If that was the plan, I think we'd know by now. There's no point in keeping negotiations going and leaking things to the media about a deal being imminent. Booker is the face of the franchise. Dragic was the last person to hold that sort of distinction and it's the same front office that ran him out. So there's not a lot of faith in them doing the right thing, at least in fans eyes, and I don't think I'd be the only one here worried about them doing something to screw it up down the line. Sign him now, get it done with.

None of this post has anything to do with Booker.

He's not Carmelo. He is a hard wing, in-shape athlete whose trajectory is sky high. Meanwhile, Carmelo is dead weight (literally and figuratively).

He's not Penny. Booker isn't damaged goods.

Comparing Knight and Booker in any category is a waste, for obvious reasons.

You're afraid of all of the things that can go wrong, when you should consider all of the things that could go right with this move. First and foremost, you're rewarding the unquestioned face of the franchise. By taking care of him, you're sending a message to current and future Suns that you're willing to invest in talent. You're also sending a message to fans that #TankSZN is over. Second, you're investing in what obviously is the upward trajectory of Booker. He's 21 years-old and has been super productive on teams with poor surrounding talent and the worst coaching in NBA history. Imagine what he's going to look like with better talent around him and a coach who knows how to make him successful and not experiment with him.

If you're loyal to the organization, you also have to have faith in what it's doing. I know that seems odd to consider with all of the head-scratchers made by McD, Sarver, et al, but at this point, you have to believe in the moves. Jackson was a great pick. Ayton was an elite pick. While we're not contenders today, you have to be excited for the future. No more handwringing.
Look all the positives you guys argue for are 100% legit. But as you just pointed out Poker may be only looking at the negatives but everyone arguing against him is only looking at the positives. Playing either end of the spectrum is dumb in virtually every scenario. You have to adopt a balanced vantage point if you want to pursue the most prudent course of action.

So far here’s what I see:

Poker: have to get something to give early extension.

Everyone else: have to give booker everything he wants.

There’s a middle ground. And it may be closer to one end of the spectrum than the other, but there is middle ground. And mind you, it might not be amount. There are a myriad of elements that go into a contract that might be negotiating points. At the end of the day we have very little true insight into all this.

No, what's your problem?

He wants Booker to give concessions -- I'm saying the Suns aren't in a position to demand concessions. It's a players league and demanding concessions can lead to disaster. And you know that.

Not sure if you're deliberately being obtuse or not. Seems like you don't understand what position Booker has in this organization.

Why does negotiating have to equate to “screwing around with this?” You guys are all so black and white.

Why is this so important to you?

We (the rest of us rational fans) are hoping the Suns establish themselves here as a good destination for free agents since we recognize talent and are willing to take a risk if you can show that you have potential.

You and others want to establish the Suns as pessimistic a-holes who will nickel-and-dime you because "it's a business, and you the player are a commodity and don't need to feel anything about this except grateful that we're willing to pay you something."

The hell?

There’s something that’s called a salary cap. It’s not unlimited. Dollars that go any player (booker included) cannot go to another free agent. Hence money doesn’t grow on trees.

Exactly.

This isn't a debate about whether to give Dragan Bender $15mil a year or $10mil a year. This is a discussion about our franchise player. Demanding concessions? Really? How anyone can think that is the way to do business with Booker is nuts.

What help did he have?
Everyone wants to compare what booker did at an early age to lebron. Did lebron have substantially more help? I’ll grant you Kobe did. But I mean you gotta look at everything. Turning a blind eye to relevant information is stupid.

And they have enough of it to afford to pay Booker. You would have a good point if they didn't have enough to pay him or enough to go around, but they do.

You obviously don't get it.

The money growing on trees thing actually had nothing to do with the contract -- it was simply a snarky way of showing that there are a lot of things we want but are basically impossible. Like money growing on trees or marrying models who never age.

I totally agree with this unless it was contemplated with booker up front. In that case, if he’s good with it, I’m good with it. Who cares what the press has been saying if they’re not privy to their closed conversations.

And... ?

WHAT IS YOUR POINT? You want the Suns to demand Booker NOT get the max? You want them to take the 5th year of the table? What? You're so quick to criticize the posters but you aren't providing any relevant ideas.

I have not seen anyone compare Booker to a young LeBron...

The only area in which Booker is comparable to a young LeBron is purely as a scorer. Young LeBron was far better at everything else. Also, yes LeBron had a better supporting cast early in his career.

I do get it. But I thought it was funny that yiur snarky comment actually points AWAY from giving booker everything he wants and you didn’t see it.

Sigh. I don’t think you understand what I was pointing out.

And apparently the only “problem” I have is you being thin-skinned. Have a nice day chap.
