That article is from 2005. The headline reads: D-Backs sign Byrnes to $2.25 million deal. It has nothing to do with the 30 millions dollar extension.

My bad, I copied and pasted the wrong article.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=2964879

What's done is done and hopefully everyone involved in the front office will learn from this mistake and not act so hastily in the future when signing guys to extensions.

It's tough following this team right now and we are get frustrated, but the players must be feeling a lot worse. Maybe Eric can get a few hits tonight and the Diamondbacks get their second win in a row. :)

Looks like rain in the Boston area. Hopefully there won't be a delay.

Whatever people need to relax its a long season and almost EVERY guy in the majors goes through slumps. They will produce they proved they can at the beginning of the season, they just got to do it and get some confidence and get on a roll again. A sweep against the Red Sox would be a good place to start. And Byrnes in his short stint in Az. has produced how about cutting the guy a little slack, by the end of the year I am sure his numbers will be his normal averages and he will get some big hits along the way. Wow people friggin jump all over a guy coming off an injury just silly!

His line since coming to AZ:

.268/.327/.458 .785 OPS in 350 Games, 1,376 at bats

Since signing the $30M contract:

99 Games: 393 AB .226 BA /.299 OBP/ .372 Slg .671 OPS 11 HR 46 RBI 66 Run

You call this "producing"?

If Brynes had been hitting .260 or whatever his career batting average is before he got injured, nobody would care but the harsh reality is, he was hitting, what .220 and looking like he had no clue how to hit a ball. Then he goes to Class A Visalia and goes 1 for 12 in his rehab stint and then promptly goes 0 fer in his first MLB game back.

Byrnes, right now, is a hindrance to this team progressing right now and has not shown much to make people believe he will suddenly start hitting enough to end the year close to his normal numbers.

Injury or no injury, Byrnes has to re-earn the respect of the fans by what he does at the plate...not by his goofy false hustle or getting dirty every game but by actually making a true impact on getting this team back on track.

Just for historical purposes, when Byrnes was signed this was the poll on the front page of the DBacks website:

I think that poll shows why the Diamondbacks management signed Byrnes. The "average" fan wanted Byrnes resigned because he was a sociable, fan-friendly player that happened to be playing well. At the time in a precarious position with the fanbase, management shelled out the money to appease "average" fan(which is far and away a majority of fans on phoenix).

So far Tracy has all fours runs driven in and the Diamondbacks are up 4-1 bottom of the 4th. Nice to see Byrnes finally get a hit.

Davis is pitching a solid game. Nice to put a few more runs on the board. By the way, I like how Cadiotti is going to toss batting practice tomorrow to get the guys ready for Wakefield.

Qualls blows the lead and it's 5-4 Red Sox.

we should bring Qualls his contract onto the mound, light it on fire, and send him home

This one is going to sting. Why did Melvin keep Qualls in there?

Only the third time this season Qualls has given up more than one earned run in an appearance.

Two of the runs were charged to an "ineffective after the 7th" Davis. Looks like a dumb decision by the staff. I view Qualls as a middle relief guy, not a "come in in a jamb and take care of business" guy.

The real Chad Qualls showed up tonight. 1-6, nice. Davis' excellent 7 innings is WASTED  and again, they are doomed by late big inning by the opponent. :pullhair:

Byrnes and Drew at the top of the lineup combined for 1-for-9 with a walk.

Wakefield and Johnson tomorrow, combined 86 years of age on the mound, I think. Bring the geritol.

but he has still lost 6 games. That is a huge amount for a relief pitcher prior to the all-star break. Quite frankly, in clutch situations, Qualls has not earned his pay-check.

I have to agree. Qualls has been nothing but a disappointment since coming over from Houston. At this point I would rather have Cruz out there pitching the 7th inning.

Two enormous mistakes by Clarabelle:
1. No way in the world should Davis have started the eighth. I was sitting here screaming at Clarabelle (along with a zillion other fans), "What in the billy-do-hell are you doing???" And then Davis did what he does in the late innings, and then, 2. this clown brings in Qualls. Sweet, weepin' gee-a-zuz!!! Did he have some money on Boston? Anyway, Qualls did what Qualls does in the late innings and here we are with another loss that should have been a win.

People can call Clarabelle the Mad Scientist if they like,... I see him as the big winner of the Emmett Kelly award.... :thumbdown

Agree. I don't know what his fascination is with Qualls. Also, in the top of the 9th, he should of had Byrnes try and steal 2nd because the chances they were going to get two singles against Papplebon were slim.

I don't know how that can be considered "nothing but a disappointment" given those numbers. A 3.06 ERA (147 ERA+), 1.10 WHIP, along with career bests (so far) in opposing slugging, on base percentage, and Ks/9 is nothing to scoff at. Especially when you compare what he has done to what the more expensive Jose Valverde has done this year.

*unfortunately those numbers are before today so they'll rise a bit, but the point still stands.
