The good news for Cardinal draftniks is that there are some excellent OTs out there worthy of a low first round pick which we again will have. (We could suck for Luck but I think we will win some games and not get the first pick.)

Kiper on his Big Board has 3 OTs listed in the top 9 players:

Matt Kalil USC is rated #2
Jonathan Martin Stanford is rated #6
Riley Reiff Iowa is rated #9

I checked other sources and most have them rated similar.

Stanford plays at USC this weekend so we can watch both Kalil and Martin.

Note: Levi Brown will be dropped as his cap figure for 2012 will be nearly $17 million -- $8.3 million in salary and $9.675M in a roster bonus.

i wish the cardinals were good at sniffing out talent in the lower rounds because the 1st round selections of guards and tackles has been awful

I like all 3 guys. Kalil is light but he's an elite athlete at the position. Shouldn't get past the Colts. At USC he played LT and top 10 pick Tyron Smith played RT... Martin is probably the most important Tackle in the country protecting the greatest QB prospect since Manning. Luck rarely gets touched... I wouldn't be suprised if we reached for Reiff. Whiz has a history drafting Big 10 players and most schools in that conference have very well coached offensive lines. Grimm loves huge lineman and Reiff is a monster physically. He might have to move to RT in the pros. The Rams and Jags have young franchise QB's who get sacked a lot so they could pull the trigger on a tackle before us.

That sounds vaguely familiar with the current Left Tackle

Yes. Levi Brown was touted. The Cardinals in the absence of getting Luck should move down in the draft and gather more picks. They need a lot of help.

Yeah but martin plays in a system where the QB is protected by scheme too they play lots of TE's, extra lineman and don't throw a ton. He's also better known for his run blocking because of the scheme.

He's bigger than Kalil interestingly Kalil looks a lot leaner than Martin to me but the weights are pretty close listed.

I'd be happy with either I'm not familiar with Rieff.

If they don't get a solid O-tackle or two in free-agency, they MUST pick one of those three tackles with their first pick. There should not even be a question...they have to do it.

I get and watch Big 10 games constantly and I can honestly say I had never heard of Riley Reiff until about 4 weeks ago. Top guys like Thomas, Gallery, Carimi, Bulaga, and even the kid from Indiana whose name escapes me right now that went in round 2 last year, I had heard and seen plenty of. That doesn't mean Reiff is not any good but he was not on the radar prior to this year.

What we really need is better blocking. That way Kolb can take 30 yard sacks instead of 18 yard ones, and become the first player to ever take a safety on a ball snapped on the other side of the 50.

I forgot how depressing it was to talk draft in Week 8. :sigh:

Whiz probably thinks the O-line is still fine and will draft another RB.

Unless we have a chance to draft QB Andrew Luck...if the first pick in next year's draft is on offense it will set the franchise back even further. Too much ground to make up on defense---it's about time the organization turn the tables and start to get the defense "right."

We need TOUGH guys---leaders with a passion for winning.

I know we desperately need new OTs, but coming out of next year's draft without a top-tier pass rusher would sting. I can't take another year of watching the corpse of Joey Porter's corpse flounder his way through games. Of course, watching Levi and Keith for another season would also make my eyes bleed, so we're screwed either way.

Trading away that second rounder for Kolb looks worse by the day. I wonder if anyone would give up a second for Dockett. If we're not going to utilize him correctly, I'd rather spend the resources on a position that actually makes an impact in this defense.

Definitely a valid point the lack of a pass rush is killing this team. We can expect the CB's to get better. Hopefully Rhodes healthy is where he was last season. We'll need a SS but you typically don't have to use a first rounder on one anyways.

We need pass rushers and LB's and we need them badly.

It's why I actually agree with people who want Bradley to play more, he'll either get it or he won't so let him play.

It's early in the evaluation process but I just don't see any dominant pass rushing player for our 3 - 4 defense at this time that is worth a high draft pick.
(Top 5)
I like Courtney Upshaw Alabama who many project as an OLB in a 3 -4 defense

He would be an excellent pick if we traded down and perhaps got back our 2nd round pick.

It the Cards do not get the #1 pick and are not in position to draft Kalil they should look to move down to the 8 - 12 range (maybe Redskins), swap picks in the 1st and get a 2nd rounder. Redskins may want Barkley or L. Jones at QB. Cards could then get Martin and pick another need in round 2.

That would be a good move and with several good qbs in the draft, teams may be willing to trade up with us.

I feel like 1st round tackles are such a crap chute. I would rather roll the later round picks into a few different line options than blow a pick where we really need a skill guy and especially a QB on a 300 pound lug with huge bust potential.

I just hope we don't reach on a tackle if a more talented player is availble. We already know how that worked out (granted 07' was a pretty extreme case). If someone like Justin Blackmon falls because Kalil and Martin are off the board i'd favor him over a non top 10 talent like Reiff. It sucks we don't get to see them in the Senior Bowl being all juniors. I'd love to trade down with a team that wants to grab Trent Richardson like the Bengals who have multiple picks.

The funny thing is that Reiff wasn't even the highest rated tackle in the state of Iowa at the start of the season.

Kelechi Osemele from Iowa State was thought of as one of the best tackles in the country this year but he has been nursing a bad ankle all year and it has hurt his play.

Osemele is a monster at 6'6" 347. He might be a good pick later on as his stock has fallen as a result of the injury.

Our offense is statistically every bit as bad as our defense right now.

Offense is 20th in total yards, defense is 19th.
Offense is 22nd in Pts/game, defense is 28th which wouldn't be as bad if we didn't lead the league in most defensive possessions starting on the wrong side of the 50 yard line.

Point is, our offense is every bit as bad as our defense, but our defense at least has lots of young talent and could get better just by progression and Porter/Haggans hopefully retiring.

What does it say about the defense when your two starting CBs are leading the team in tackles?
