So Mitch given you seem to have the magic going, who do you like in R2?

Kyle Van Noy---but I don't think he'll be available at #52.

Let me sleep on it and get back to you.

What's your call in R2?

Good call Mitch but as you stated, it was a total need pick. Hope it works out.

I am going to write more about this tomorrow, Cbus, but I actually think this is what BA&SK had in mind if certain key players were off the board at #20---which they were----like our boy Shazier---had Shazier been there at #20, I think the Cardinals would have stayed and made the pick.

We've been wondering all off-season why the Cardinals haven't signed a UFA SS---and now we know why. A priority was to get bigger, younger, tougher and faster at SS and tonight the Cardinals did.

Steve Keim had Deone Bucannon rated at or near the top of the Cardinals' board. There was careful planning in this selection.

I can see a trade up for Ealy, Hagemann, or Attichou in R2.

I'd prefer we didn't trade up, there's too much talent still on the board but I'd jump on Ealy if he's still there at 52. If not, either of the other two you mentioned or maybe Amaro.

Glad someone else saw the writting on the wall that this kid was rising on draft boards. Which just means the media catching up with what the scouts already knew months prior.

Only thing I am worried about is if he will just be a Adrian Wilson with Better hands or not. Which means we will still suffer in coverage some, with just a few more INT's to show for it. We shall see.

If anything, he can probably cover TEs better than Bell, and he's 15 years younger.

That WSU defense last season was awful, and Bucannon was the lone bright spot. Seemed to be the lone guy who didn't miss tackles.

There is a ton of upside to this pick and little risk. He fills an immediate need. I would've puked had we taken Carr and had him rot on the bench for 1-2 years while the playoffs are in arms reach.

Agree. Good to see you posting again.

Nice Call Mitch, all that research and home work you do pays off far more than not.

Nice job Mitch! Love the pick AND the extra 3rd-rounder.

OLB {pass rusher}, DE, OT, K, TE, fast WR and possibly QB. Plenty of work left for BA&SK, but they are off to nice start IMO.

being that adub is one of the very few in the 20-20 club, better hands could be huge!

Adub in his prime never played on a defense like this. We had a great defense last year, but SS was a big hole. We've now plugged that hole, and our secondary right now looks massively better then it did last year.

PP7/Cro/Honey Badger/Buchanon....with Powers/Bethel/Johnson/Jefferson, etc as backups? Wow.

If our run defense stays around the top and our pass defense (especially covering TE's) gets better, our defense will move up to near the top. I think we've done a good job remaking the secondary for this year. We will now have three young players out of four spots in the secondary with PP/Badger/Buchanon.

If we end up with Cro+Buchanon+Edge Rusher and lost Dansby, that's a big net gain from the end of last year. It's still possible that happens, and perhaps even more.

Except the part about being our pick at 52, which he had correctly identified where this pick should have went.

A few posts down he says:

I think Bryan McCann will make the roster. Whitley, because of his speed and versatility, has a chance.

I think one of those tall CBs---McGill, SJB or Desir---could make a good deal of sense in round 3. Like you said, they could be used to cover TEs.

Rashad Johnson is, imo, better than he gets credit for. So, we'll see. He seems to get a little stronger and a little more sudden each year.

I could see SK trading down and taking Bucannon---but, it's hard to say because SK is going to draft BPA, not for need.

Pretty much nailed it.

We all know ALL teams weigh BPA according to specific needs and scheme fits. No such thing as true BPA unles your drafting in the top 10 - sometimes only in the top 5. Otherwise grades start to bunch together more and more.

Almost all teams use two draft boards and they're weighted for fit. Every teams board is different.

Guess, for once, I predicted a Cardinals' draft trade.

When I watched the tapes of Pryor, Clinton-Dix and Bucannon, what became plain to me was that Pryor was a little small for the box and covering TEs, is a big hitter, but as i said before he's like A-Dub he hits and at times does not wrap up. Clinton-Dix is a deep FS safety who has length but he's not very tough (so that didn't seem to fit the Cardinals' need) and Bucannon seemed to have everything the Cardinals were looking for---size, speed (4.48), toughness (best tackling safety in the draft) and, best of all, the ability to cover TEs.

It sure felt good for the past three weeks to, to be watching Path to The Draft every night and seeing Curtis Conway claim night after night that Deone Bucannon is the best safety in the draft.

I think that because Bucannon played at Washington St. and not Louisville or Alabama that many of the pundits were reluctant to rank him above the other two. But when you watch the tape, Bucannon is a special talent...and while Pryor and Clintion -Dix are very good talents, for what the Cardinals need, Bucannon is the best talent.

Plus, Keim brokered an extra third round pick. Yes!

Well done Mitch. You nailed it!!!

I don't know Chris I think Bucannon is 1st round talent as are the better part of the picks that will go in round 2. No way he was ever going to be there at 52 so I think it was a bold move to take him at 27 but given the premium on safeties it was the right call. If he turns out to be as good as I expect we will be happy to pay him rookie money at a rate of a little under $8M over the four year term vs the $40M per Seattle will be shelling out for Earl Thomas. If I am not mistaken by taking him in R1 we get him for an extra year right?

Impressive call, Mitch.

What I love about ASFN these days is---many of us had done our homework on Deone Bucannon and had him listed as one of the picks we were hoping for the most at #52. Kudos goes to ASFN---we were on to Bucannon way before Curtis Conway and some of the pundits were. Kudos to ASFN posters! We also knew as the draft process evolved that Bucannon's stock was steadily rising. Best of all, Steve Keim knew this.

I also get what Chris is saying---but I understand that Steve Keim rightly worked the board and the picks in the Cardinals' favor because Deone Bucannon was not going to make it #52, and in all likelihood, based on reports, he was going to get picked by the Pats or the 49ers at #29 or #30.

If you notice---both on ESPN and on NFL Network, once the pick was announced (despite the cry for Derek Carr) both crews warmed immediately up to the pick---because Bucannon was a player every much on their radar.

The 5th year option is a real bonus...you are right-on, Reddog.
