The Cards have historically telegraphed their preferred draft option to fans on the eve of such draft. It was clear when out of the blue Urban and Wolfley were speaking highly of Daryl Washington (whom the Cards would have picked in the first round had Dan Williams not been available). Every year, the Cards seemed to make it clear what their draft intention was.

Now? In the past two days, Darren Urban has repeated multiple times that "things would be interesting" if the Cards traded down. Today, he makes a blog post titled "How the Trade Winds Blow" where he basically says that the Cards will look to trade, and they're probably not going to trade up.

Maybe the recent reports about the Cards liking D.J. Fluker are accurate. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Cards move down in this draft to pick up a second-tier OT or an offensive guard while garnering a 3rd or 4th round pick.

The Falcons are a team that's been rumored to feel like they're a player away from going to the Super Bowl. I wonder if Milliner, Ansah, or Werner are available whether they'd be interested in moving up.

I totally agree but if we trade all the way down with atlanta we better be getting a hell of a lot more than a 3, but i completely feel we will trade down as well.

I feel with this new head in the front office and new coach, many of the trends set in previous drafts might not hold true this time.

That said the pieces of a puzzle you are laying out does point to such a possibility.

If true, I feel like perhaps they already have an offer on the table or come to some sort of an arrangement that if certain players are off the board, a trade down would be consummated.

Hopefully if we do, it doesn't backfire in our faces.

I'm not opposed to trading down, even multiple times, but I personally really don't want to miss out on Warmack.

If they want Fluker, it makes sense to trade down, though with all the apparent interest of late, it seems like Fluker is still going to be picked in the 15-20 range at lowest. A trade with Atlanta would in all certainty (from a pre-draft speculation standpoint) remove us from having a chance to drafting Fluker.

I do have more faith in Keim as a shrewd negotiator (even though it's limited examples) then I ever had with Rod.

edit: Wow Fluker is officially a late riser

NFL Draft insider Tony Pauline reports the Titans and Chargers are both considering Alabama RT D.J. Fluker at Nos. 10 and 11, respectively.

I think we would like to trade down if all of the LTs are gone. Whether or not we can find a trade partner is the question.

I'll feel much better trading back knowing Graves isn't pulling the trigger. It would make sense to trade back.

I think the key guy is Tyler Eifert. Alot of teams, Atlanta being one, like him and, if he gets by Cleveland, they will be calling the Cards. T move back that far, the Cards can ask for Atl's 1 and 2 this year and a #1 next and may get it because the Falcons are on the brink of winning it all.

That would give the Cards a Demetruis Moore/ Datone Jones in round 1 with Brandon Albert traded for round 2 and then grab a safety like Eric Reid with Atlanta's 2nd this year and still have two first round picks next year.

I tend to agree, but it could turn out alright. If LT Johnson is available, and they are not that high on him, why not trade down with the Chargers. Pick up a 3rd rounder and still get one of the guards?

That extra pick could then be used to move up in the buttom of the 1st and take e.g. Fluker.

I would be very satisfied if it played out that way.

If we could get picks like that sign me up.

The number of trades is probably the most intriguing part of the draft to me under the new CBA rules/rookie pay scale. People might forget that last year 6 out of the top 7 and 10 out of the top 17 draft picks changed hands via trade. I don't think the craziest of mock drafts predicted what actually happened.

I think last year's draft was very top heavy and a lot of the trading was due to people wanting to move up to grab the elite talent. I think this year's draft has a lot of depth but not the perceived elite talent on top. So, it will be interesting to see if there is the same flurry of trade activity as last year or if teams won't be as eager to move up this year.

It's going to be a challenge to find a partner to trade down with. Right now it looks like Dion Jordan at #7 if the tackles are gone or Jarvis Jones if a trade down is consummated. If the tackles AND Jordan are gone, ????

Mike Jurecki says the Cardinals really like Jarvis Jones. I do too. Most complete pass rusher in the draft according to some.

You give us a post that says the obvious, that OL is their priority. Then say TA is on their radar?? :mulli:

I think it'll be Lane Johnson or they'll definately do a trade down if anything even remotely worth while is offered, which should be.

They'd like to take Warmack, Cooper or possibly Fluker, just not at the #7.

And I'd agree with that strategy, IF Johnson is indeed gone.

Other strategy is to take an OLB, but I doubt it with all the emphasis being on the OL.

IMO, if Atlanta wants to acquire the #7 pick, I'd think they'd have to move up twice, because I doubt the Cards would want to go lower than 13-15.

Despite all the OL talk, I think if Dion Jordan is there, we take him. And if he gets by Jacksonville, he could be there. We could be truly special on Defense with him. (I know we still need a safety, but I have not ruled out a return by Kerry Rhodes.)

It seems to me that a lot of times when a new Head Coach comes in, they focus on the "other side" of the ball, because they are so confident in their abilities, they feel they can "coach up" (I hate that term) their own side of the ball. Plus, Ariens may want to give Bowles every opportunity to keep that Defense dominant.

I’m just an unfrozen caveman lawyer. Your strange football ways and magic internet tools frighten and confuse me.

But it seems to me that sometime in the past this "trading down" of which you speak was attempted before and the results both terrified and saddened me. This resulted in a great wailing and gnashing of teeth when a man with the hands of skillets appeared within our midst and caused much dismay and consternation. So much so that the man who instituted such foolishness was banished from the tribe in a quick decade or thereabouts.

That makes me afraid of it and not at all confident that this will be the path a new medicine man would take.

I think that trade down happened before Steve Keim was hired here.

Some thoughts...

-I now believe the Cardinals draft board is essentially Joeckel, Fisher, L Johnson and Dion Jordan. If these guys are gone, then trade down.

-I believe that trading up is a buyer's market. Don't expect to get a ton by trading down in this draft. Too many teams want to move down and too few want to move up.

-If you do trade down, you can probably throw out the idea of getting Cooper or Warmack. They might drop, but you can't count on it. That gets you Calvin Pace. The reason is that the teams most likely to trade up are probably in the 20's. Rams, Vikings, Colts, 49ers and Falcons. I would expect both OGs to be gone by then.
