I want to watch a sport where I don`t have to worry about if the star RB or QB will be available to play or if he is sitting in jail for beating up his wife or girlfriend or being passed out drunk at a intersection at 3 in the morning.I want a sport where the daily news doesn`t start out with a freaking crime report. There are plenty of responsible players who don`t get in the news for acting like morons.
Interesting....
The numbers don't lie. One in every 45 National Football League players (2.2 percent) is arrested. The national arrest rate is 1 in 23 (4.2 percent), according to the FBI in 2010.
What does that mean? Technically, NFL players get in 47.6 percent less trouble than your average Joe.
When Mike the butcher gets a DUI, it's not news. But when Steve the cornerback gets busted for public intoxication, it becomes a story.
WCCO Minnesota's Jason DeRusha reports that in 2010, the NBA had by far the highest arrest rate (5.1 percent) of the major professional sports leagues in America. Major League Baseball is second with an arrest rate of 2.1 percent last year. Believe it or not, the NFL is last with (2.0 percent) of its players in trouble.

So yeah, their rates within the NFL are lower than national average in all categories, but DV is the runaway winner for the crime of choice in the NFL.

Hate to break it to you but if you want a team full of church boys good kick with that. I don't watch pro football for Boy Scouts this is just reality

This comment is beyond ridiculous.

There's like 2,100 NFL players & probably about 20-30 idiots every year. Lots of good peeps in this league who do good things & a small amount of knuckleheads.

IMO it's about time the bad rich & famous get treated like the bad regulars like what would happen to us.

While I deplore the violence against women, the cynic in me asks why now? Why wait to go to the police?

Don't be surprised to see more of these things happen league-wide. It's a hot topic now.

That was my point.

What people need to understand that I REALIZE you should never hit a woman, and MOST men do. But until you have seen real domestic violence and the way a person (man or woman) can push someone over the edge by their actions - or lie about their actions - there is a VERY realistic possibility some of the hoodrats that players associate with will try and take advantage of the current status of domestic violence as a news leader.

If you feel the need to argue with me, whatever. I have defended well over 200 DV cases as an appointed defense attorney. It is not as black and white as "NEVER HIT A WOMAN." It just isn't. And I never understood it until I experienced the cases and the various parties involved.

I was wondering that as well.

Does she feel more comfortable that it would be addressed properly given the current climate? Did all the talk about DV encourage her to finally come forward, where she may have been too afraid too in the past?

Or does she feel given the current climate she can make more money in a Divorce settlement now?

It should be a bigger story. They have a very public job. Right or wrong they are put on pedestal and considered role models. Your average Joe is not. It's the price they pay and are willing to pay to play a game for a living and make a ton of money.

The press reports average Joe crimes all the time but a story about a celebrity or athlete is bigger because there are more ratifications than just the legal aspect. If your a celebrity not only do you impact the victims but there are impacts to the movie studios, record labels, sports franchise or leagues they represent.

It's not a validation that their crimes are any worse than the average Joe one bit. However, when a celebrity breaks the law like it or now it is a much bigger story because of the further reaching impacts.

P.S. This entire thing makes me sick.

Both are equally as possible. What a world we live in.

If this was Ellingtion, would you feel the same way? I would hope so.

I wonder about that as well. I don't see it giving her more money in a divorce settlement because by pressing the charges she has effectively lowered his income earning ability. I definitely see the possibility of a woman in a relationship with a pro football player using a DV allegation as a threat, whether it really happened or not, but once the allegation has been made it hurts their future income potential.

Dwyer was charged with aggravated assault and preventing someone from calling 911.

What is horrible is that more football players than we would ever dream of have been violent towards women many many times and to many different women. We haven't touched the tip of the iceberg and maybe never will.

I wish they would take a anonymous survey asking every nfl player if he has ever abused a woman in any way?
