:Is it protect the shield or protect "The Game"?

1) Each year it seems 3-4 rules change affecting how the players play it & how the refs officiate it. The fans become confused, the players become confused & the refs become more & more confused.

I get that the league is trying to make the NFL game safer, but do new rules really make it safer? Isn't it football, where one guy is trying to beat the crap out of the other? IMO nothing will ever eliminate concussions, given the brain slams into a players skull at violent speeds. New helmets? Possibly somewhat. Now, we see peeps going low & blowing out knees because of those rules...that will probably change next year. I don't have the answers to correct all the injuries or even lessen them, but peeps are gonna get hurt because of the games violence. When does it end? Flag football? No helmets? 2 hand touch? Pushing 16 games to 18 & expanding playoff teams to 14 or even 16 is gonna increase this injuries...it's gonna happen at some point! Possession on a catch in this league is differant with every ref...pass interference also. The tuck rule, blatant fumbles that aren't challengeable. Wtf

2) Then the Commish starts talking about a team in London. How many countries are next? A Global World Football League?

3) Talk has been brewing of a future Super Bowl in London? Seriously? Jeez. That won't mess any teams sleep or preparing habits for the NFLs biggest game. I guess that game will be moved to 12 pm to start at 6 pm British time, or will the league play its usual night SB night game & make the Brits go to the game in the AM next morning? Lol I get that there are big time NFL fans across the ocean, but this is Americas game...it's #1 sport & it's biggest game should be played in the good ol USA IMO.

4) Now Goodell & his cronies in NY are talking about possibly moving next weeks Super Bowl to Fri, Sat, later or earlier on Sunday. Now get this...possibly even Monday if the weather doesn't cooperate. Seriously? Are you guys freaking morons? Didn't you crazies think of this when putting Americas Game in NJ? This is exactly why the Title game shouldn't be played in possible bad weather or you should leave things as they are scheduled!!! What about the fans who are traveling throughout the country to attend your freaking Super Bowl? Many who have paid BIG $$$ to see their team or possibly have a once in a lifetime experience. What about fans those fans who can't get to NY early Sat? A Monday game? What about the your hard working fans who have flights scheduled back to their home cities?

I live in Dallas & this city was bashed for not being prepared for a blizzard a few years back. People sued the NFL & Devil Jones because of seating issues. Attending any of the NFL functions were nearly impossible to attend & businesses lost thousands & thousands of dollars because of the weather. Did the NFL learn its lesson? Hell no, they rewarded NY/NJ a Super because of their new stadium.

I don't have an issue with the game being played in bad weather & think it will be kinda cool to see it on TV, but possibly screwing your fans because of bad weather is incomprehensible IMO. Your right Roger, it's all about "Protecting the Shield" & $$$, not about "The Game" or it's fans!!!

Agree with most of this. Except I think the average fan is clueless about most of the rules. They know first downs and touchdowns but little else. Those fans probably approve of the new sissified NFL. For diehards like people on this forum it may seem like it's being ruined to some extent but for the average guy I doubt it. I doubt most people knew the rules of old style gladiatorial combat either but they still watched.

When we were younger most altercations at worst could end up in a fistfight. Nowadays they just shoot your ass. Times change. I'm not surprised by a few rules trying to take some of the aggression out of the game. Regarding the extra points proposed change, I can't even speak to that. But if you take a game like chess for example for centuries they played games that often took days, and over time the games shortened so people could watch. Nowadays they use clocks for each move so a game only takes a couple hours. All so it would be more spectator-friendly. That's what we're seeing with football.

After hearing about a possible Monday Super Bowl that would screw many fans attending with travel arrangements getting home, it just sent me over the edge today. Granted it might not happen, but if it did imagine the lawsuits waiting to happen against the league. It's basically, screw the fans we're gonna do it our way

If the Commish REALLY cares what his fans think, he should quit jacking with the game. It seems the players really despise Goodell & he needs to wake the **** up ASAP.

Agree with much of what you say here. The whole deal to this new regime is its all about $$$. The honest truth about the eliminating the extra point out of the game probably comes down 7-10 mins out of an actual game time on TV...which in turn will be sold off to the highest bidder for more commercials & more ca$h for the league IMO. Another way to fatten the leagues wallets & probably not giving the players a dime.

I'm a football fan and a big Cards fan. It's time to make things more like they were. Baseball add's some changes, but it's still 3 strikes, 4balls .nine innings. Football must remain the same. Yes better helmets. I'm for better padding, but we most respect the type of game it is, a hitting game.

The game plans,less stupid penaltys, hitting without intent to hurt. Put the game in he hands of the players, coaches and zebras. Let our players practice what will be allowed.

I love American football , but we don' t need to play in Europe. I they want teams to travel 16 hours and more to count within the standings it's not fair to those teams. Forget England, france al though I love those countrys, but it's our game.

Football 100 yaqrd field divided by 10 yards to the 50,11 players on offense and defense, special teams. Please let it be!

I'm still adjusting to what the hd panel has done to enhance football. The point here is the hd panel has done more for the popularity of the game than the combined efforts from those running the sport.

I know I'm older and wiser now but the business aspect is easy to see. I remember when the goal was to survive. Now, how much can we grow this business. This will never end as revenue streams run the game.

The impact is: I wouldn't miss a beat if I missed the Super Bowl. I see enough business at work. Eventually there will be more who feel the same.

The problem with trying to play football the way it was is that modern techniques in nutrition and training have made the 100X53 yard field obsolete its just too small for today's players.

40 years ago who would have thought we'd have so many guys 6'5" 265lbs who were as quick as cats playing LB.

The players are just too big and too fast and too well trained to play the way they did at the time of the first Super Bowl. The Offensive line for Don Coryell's first playoff team averaged 264lbs! The Defensive Ends were 255 and 244. The Defensive Tackles 261 and 270. And they didn't train like the players do today.

The NFL had to open up the game and limit contact to keep these guys from killing each other.

Exactly DuckJake. It is only a matter of time before things have to change for the longevity of the league. They have to create new revenue streams to pay for all the lawsuits they have been and will be hit with. People love this game and don't want it to change but yet they sue for every little thing. They need lawyers to watch other lawyers. They need lawyers to protect them from the players and vice versa. Fans bitch about changes and what not, but I think a lot of the things they did were meant to help and will pay dividends.

I also think it's a double edged sword. They have to protect players so these great players will be able to play week in and week out so you the fan will want to show up at the games to pay the prices needed to pay these players these exorbitant salaries.

IMO they had to have a Super Bowl in New York. It is the media capital of the world. Now I don't believe it will be a regular thing so let it go.

I think the bigger crime was them having a Super Bowl in Detroit and Jacksonville or even in Dallas to a point.
