I don't think this is a rumor. I think it's fact and if you've been listening to all the press conferences and reading everything, you shouldn't be surprised.

In this morning's paper, Edge is quoted as wanting to be an even bigger part of the offense than he has been. Huh? He's touched the ball more in his last two years here than ever before in his career.

Then there's that never-hidden annoyance Whisenhunt has with Edge's resistance to working out here.

I've been on record about this for a long time. If we get a good RB in the draft, Edge will be gone.

In fact, I think Whisenhunt has RB acquisition as a high priority and Edge is as good as gone right now.

The Cards do need another running back to complement James. Finishing 29th in rushing yards when you have the leagues #7 rusher easily tells you that.

We need a guy who can get around 300 yards to go with Edge's 1000+ instead of JJ and his 78 this year or Shipps 41 in 2006.

Huh?? James has touched the ball fewer times per game in each of the last two years than in any other year of his career, and fewer times overall than in any other year in which he played at least 15 games.

The Colts sure threw the ball to Edge a lot more than the Cards have.

...and his replacement would be?

Shipp? Arrington? A rookie TBD?

$5 mil ain't a lot for a vet RB with his contribution.

IMHO Edge has one good solid year left in his tank. This is the year to get a guy like Jonathon Stewart. Graves needs to do what it takes. Even if he pulls that draft off, Edge needs to be here next year.

Dumping Edge at this point is lunacy, IMO.

Edge is one of the best yards after contact runners I've ever seen, this past year included. One thing that can't be disputed is that our OL allows a LOT of contact, hence we need a runner like Edge.

I admit, Edge has lost a step, no more so evident than in the last game when he was repeatedly caught from behind.

Even still, to think we are better off without him, as I said above, is lunacy.

Go Cards!!!

Just add this to the list of dumb moronic decisions this front office loves to make. Just when you think they have changed they will go and screw it all up being cheap! He doesn't even have a big cap number geesh, how pathetic this is even being talked about.

I dont think we can replace him in one offseason. We need to find his replacement, but it will only be a step backward to just dump him without a true replacement...
Roger that (See post on another thread).

Only way it makes sense to dump James is if somebody offers far too much for him in trade and a replacement has been drafted.

Otherwise, yes, draft another running back because you've got nothing of any quality behind James, and put yourself in a situation where if James stays healthy and productive you've got a complementary back, and if he doesn't, you've got a replacement.

Only potential problem with this plan is James's ego, which I admit could be a significant problem.

I don't think James has an ego problem. It is possible the front office or coaching staff does not like his influence in the locker room, and I don't mean he is a bad influence, just a strong one.

It's called a winning attitude, and yeah I am sure the front office doesn't wanting infecting the other players with that. I mean after all if we start winning it will cost them more money to keep players. I was off the cheap bandwagon until I hear crap like this to plan on getting rid of a HOF to save a LITTLE cash, just ridiculous!

What they probably DON'T like is his doing his own thing in Miami. Virtually all head coaches want their players on site for the offseason program. Edge likes to do his own thing in Miami. Almost everyone else, including Q and Fitz, is in Arizona for the entire offseason program.

And you base this all on some reporters' speculation? Where have you been the past 3 years?

Edge was here for all of the OTA's last offseason except for about two days, which he missed with Whis' permission.

If we draft a stud rookie RB, (which I don't think will happen) Edge seems like a perfect 3rd down back to me.

That would be way too hasty in my opinion. cut him if we've someone knocking on the door waiting in the wings but i'd let Ship and Arrington go now, bring in /draft a good replacement and look to move Edge on in 2009.

I would hate for this to happen. We have a crap OL and I think that could be a definitel contributing factor to his running. Lets work on the OL first.

Haven't we been doing that for the last 10 years though?

I think we have to take the best player on the board and if that player is a RB like Stewart, take him.

Yeah, I'd love to do that. It would be nice to have Stewart of course. Have him compete for time with Shipp or Arrington.

I wouldn't cut Edge...I think that would be stupid. I'd love to have Stewart drafted and then ease him into the mix.

They never really gave any other carries this year anyway...Edge gobbled all rushing carries up.

And yet he STILL says he wants to play a bigger role in the offense... If we draft or grab a high-profile FA that would then force us to split carries between Edge and the other dude, how will Edge feel then??
I think it boils down to this: Keep Edge and keep him as our feature back, who gets ALL of the carries... Or, cut his ass and bring in other, quicker backs... I just don't see Edge being happy if he's splitting carries...

Who cares how edge feels. If he's unhappy splitting carries then he can either a) outperform the other back and get more carries or b) pout and watch his carries dwindle even further.

Would he be a cancer? Maybe, if we sucked. But if we didn't suck, nobody would care what he thought.

I dunno...I don't like coddling stars.

No, only JJ Arrington. :D

Speaking of which the draft Justin Forsett bandwagon is now taking applications!

Just kidding, great college RB way too small for viable NFL RB.
