Clippers F Elton Brand ruptures Achilles' tendon in workout

August 3, 2007

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Clippers forward Elton Brand ruptured his left Achilles' tendon on Friday during his daily workout.

Brand, 28, will undergo surgery but plans for the operation have not been finalized yet, the Clippers said.

Last month, Brand -- a veteran of eight NBA seasons -- withdrew from the U.S. national team because of an injury. He averaged 20.5 points and 9.3 rebounds last season, when the Clippers failed to make the playoffs.

that kind of injury pretty much kills his entire season, doesn't it? so, no Brand, no Livingston, an old as dirt Cassel, Kaman, Maggette, and... what? Yikes. Well, there's 4 guaranteed wins.

Unfortunate for Brand and Livingston, this is basketball karma extracting justice on Sterling for so many years of cashing in. He starts getting serious and basketball karma sees its opportunity.

so, considering that Sterling probably looks at his club and says, why the hell am I gonna pay for this team as is, is there anyone we can steal from them for very little at this point? Maybe... TT?

I guess karma was paying the Suns forward for the JJ/Amare/KT/Raja injuries over the past couple years.

It appears legitimately the Clippers may already be in a lose now mode. If Brand is gone for the season, I do not seeing the Clippers being a contender. I sure wish the Suns could trade Banks for TT.

I think we'd probably have to throw in the hawks pick along with Banks to make that deal work... but I might just do it. I do think with TT, this team could literally outscore SA. I actually think, they'd probably be the 2nd most dynamic offense of all time next to the Showtime Lakers.

so, here's the dream off-season from here on out:

Banks/Hawks Pick for Tim Thomas
sign PJ Brown for 2 million/per

and our lineup looks like:

Nash
Raja
Hill
Marion
Amare

Bench:
Barbs
Diaw
TT
PJ Brown
Tucker
Strawberry
Pike
Marks

uh, that team wins 65 games and pretty much is injury proof as well and kicks the ever living crap out of everyone.

I know that will probably NEVER happen and people will think I'm nuts to give up that Hawks pick, but to able to get a guy who fits perfectly into our system and rid ourselves of Banks albatross of a contract, I'd do it. Hell, that team still isn't even really far over the luxury tax either

I don't think the Clippers know how to use TT. Could he be had for a TE and a 2nd round pick? I'd like to keep that Atlanta pick.

i don't think we'd make that move - otherwise we would have just kept KT. That's why I think a deal would probably have to involve Banks and that pick. I'd like to keep the ATL pick as well, and I wish we had some first rounders to blow, but we don't and I don't know if the Clippers wouldjust take a straight up TT for Banks deal, but I do know that TT is probably gonna be out there for someone to take now. The Clippers are in complete crap mode now and he is useless for a team that has no shot, and likely has no shot for the next couple years.

If I could do it right now I would do it without a 2nd thought. The hawks pick I just know is gonna land in the 14-18 range.

Giving up a #14-18 pick, banks contract, and getting Tim Thomas?

Thank you clippers!

If I was the clippers I would do it only if for sure elton is out for most of the season though.

There is no way that they give up the Atlanta pick for TT or any other journeyman. It could easily be a lottery pick.

ruptured achilles puts guys out for at least 7-8 months. No way he plays this year.

this team apparently is all about win NOW, right? We know these things a) we are EXTREMELY thin at the 4/5 positions b) Nash's window can't go on much c) DA needs more three-point shooters to run the offense the way he wants to d) again, we're extremely thin at the 4/5 e) we want out of Banks' contract in the worst possible way f) we have no idea what the Hawks pick will be and what injuries are going to come next and they always come. If any star in the East goes down, so does their team, which opens it up for someone unexpected to make a jump and g) TT fits in perfectly with this offense - on our team, he's not just a journeyman. He's a legit offensive threat who was a key part of a team, that if Raja stayed healthy, probably could have beaten the Mavs.

this team's so close to getting to the ultimate prize and yes, it's a risk, but to get out of Banks' deal and bolster the front line with a guy we know fits the offense/makes big shots/always raises his game in the playoffs at the expense of a pick which likely will be low lottery in what's being called a "raw" class is a risk worth taking IMO.

No, that's just our normal miscarriage of justice. The Suns are independently wealthy in the basketball karma department, we just haven't been able to cash in on it.

There is no way the Suns put that Atlanta pick on the table for TT. No freakin' way. Not even to unload Marcus Banks' contract. Having it is why Kerr felt so comfortable moving the Suns' own pick. Even if it's in the teens, there's no way they give it up for Tim Thomas in another strong draft. They are holding it as "Marion insurance."

Yikes! My condolences to the clippers!

Now, lets get a deal done.

Their pick + ATL they could run the chance at having 2 top 10 picks.

I know some still figure atl will still hit lottery, but last year was too much of a messed up year to gauge anything. The east is still relatively poo and atlanta definately has enough talent to at least miss the playoffs by a few spots putting their pick in the 10-14 range.

The thing is, if atl finishes in the bottom 3 stern WILL, and you can tape it quote it underline it and send it back to me next year, WILL move the pick to 5-6 anyway.

And what happens when Thomas shows up overweight like last year? Fact is this has always been Thomas' M.O. until he resurrected his career in a few short months with the Suns.

That's too great a risk for a pick that is still a strong possibility to be in the lottery.

Now that's "black helicopters are hovering over my house" kind of paranoid.

When you think about it though it is a 2 sided chance coin.

Side 1: Take a chance on the pick, in which case we saw how that panned out last year with stern.

Side 2: Take a chance on Tim Thomas, possibly being like he was the season before last aka deadeye shooter with supreme swagger and some nice toughness walking through the mavs and blowing kisses at dirk getting under their skin as well as some decent boards. Just what the suns need (besides a defensive bigman). Possibility though that he pulls a diaw, which I think is highly unlikely because his numbers were solid on par last year, and he ALWAYS steps it up in the playoffs (look at his season to playoff stats his entire career).

I agree the team should have some good karma banked, I thought you were just talking about the owners karma though.

And yeah it would be extremely short sighted to trade the Atl pick for a marginal player(saddly though that is exactly what I expect to happen). Maybe the Suns would be willing to trade the TE and a 2nd round pick for him as was mentioned earlier. They'd still be paying about 1/2 of what KT would have cost and TT would play more than KT.

Yeah, kind of like a "I swear that ref is working for the mob" kind of paranoid.

Oh wait. :D

Edit: I will just say it, I honestly believe that stern does not like this suns team, or at least does not harbor any type of good will toward us whatsoever and if push comes to shove, our team is the one that will get canned by him for the betterment of another team (such as say, the hawks and spurs both last season).

On sterns part is it business? Personal team style preference? Complete idiocy? I have no idea, but it is something because he hit us with a double whammy last year, and only had bad things to say about us and good things to say about the spurs while almost the entire media thought the opposite.
