Steve Keim said the one-year contract under which running back Chris Johnson is now playing is “something we will look at” in terms of a potential extension. That sounds about right — as good as Johnson has been, Keim and the Cardinals are very careful with older veterans who they have signed to one-year deals, and regardless of how well they play, the Cards will be smart with further contract offers (see Dansby, Karlos and Cromartie, Antonio.) They will have a number they are comfortable with, and if it isn’t good enough for Johnson, the Cardinals will be ready to move on. That’s the model.

As they've said & done before, let a player go a year too early than a year too late.

yup.

if he will play for reasonable salary, extend him. I am all for it. If he wants too much, I wouldnt touch it.

No in-season extension, please. Keep him hungry and avoid the in-season extension jinx.

I would attempt to extend him. If he has a phenomenal season he is going to be hot when he hits the market and cost more if you want to keep him. The contract extension has to be reasonable but maybe if you do it now you can do it for cheaper. Just so tired of not having RB that are durable which destroys are offensive balance.

I've seen enough to say give him an extension before the season ends. This team has never had this much talent and depth at RB in all my years as a fan. Only Ottis Anderson made me smile as much as our trio does now.

he's been terrific but his reputation is such that he's a perfect guy to have on a 1 year deal.

When he got the money here in Nashville he kinda quit. The saying was "Some take the money and run and some take the money and stop(Chris Johnson)"

I love CJ and wouldnt be opposed to this on reasonable deal.

But let it breath. By end of season it may seem cray to take ANY carries from the second coming of Adrian Peterson.

And if you think thats crazy just think what the talk is going to be if he keeps up this 1 TD a game pace. David Johnson is young and for real!

He definitely didn't perform up to the level of his 2000-yard season (2009), but he did have 1400+ yards from scrimmage in the next three seasons, not far off from what he had pre-contract, in 2008 and 2010. No doubt with the money Tenessee paid they were disappointed not to get another 1600+ rushing yards - and i can't say i watched a lot of Titans games from 2011-2013 - but based on the numbers it doesn't look like he "quit".

plus we would pay low salary with high incentives and usually that keeps a player going.

The dude can flat out play. Ellington is a stud but misses a lot of time and it is nice to see a VERY capable guy replace him rather than the other garbage we had over the years.

DJ may become this but I like him as a situational guy right now too and I dont think he runs low enough to get between the tackles the way CJ does.

You nailed this one. Now I've read talk of the Cardinals doing this. I hope it happens.

I wouldn't even approach him about an extension until after the season. It's not smart to tie money up in 30+ year old RB's no matter what kind of year they had.

I hope they don't work anything out personally... He is good and has been a nice surprise... But he's 30 years old and has clearly lost 2 steps... He gets caught from behind already.... RB with his wear and tear can decline rapidly... Not smart to ou him big money anyway you slice it

I might extend him one year...but I'm not doign anything more than that. Let him test the waters...we either bring him back for a similar price or we let him get paid elsewhere. Not a real bog deal IMO. We have been successful because we are getting out of vet players a year early and not a year too late.

gotta agree. let him work for a contract all season, see if you can sign him in the off-season, but IMO, he's probably got at BEST one good year left in those legs.

feels that way. I tried to watch the first game of the season and I couldn't care less about anything going on in the game. there's nothing interesting about the team, I don't like ownership and just see nothing to get excited about over there.

all of which has finally answered a question of whether I'm a bigger football or basketball fan... it's definitely football. With as bad as the Cards have been over the years, I've always been fired up about them one way or another. I mean, for good or bad, no one can say I've ever been apathetic about this team.

The guy was nearly killed and plays with a bullet in his shoulder... He had no OTA's and no Pre-Season. And yet, he's putting up 100 yard games at a clip we haven't seen in the desert since OJ...
I would make the effort to try to lock him up for another 2 years. $2 million per, with $3 million guaranteed and loads of incentives.

I'm willing to bet that with a normal/proper offseason, he can be even better than what we've seen the far this season.

I'd probably sign him now for a 1 year extension. His value will only increase.

He had a poor day today and was still considerably better than most of what we've had. Furthermore, even after 2 fumbles, he continued to stone free rushers with his blocks. You don't lose that with age. Nor will he lose his acceleration between the tackles. What he's lost is home run ability. But I'll take consistent chain moving runs any day over the occasional big one with a lot of negative yardage thrown in.

I'd be okay with a 1 year extension, but anything else would be a mistake, IMO.

With you on that, once the backs hit 30 they tend to fall off a cliff completely. He brings enough other value to justify a year tho I believe.
