Was it just me, or did Faneca get the hook after two series so that the team could get another look at Wells at LG and Lutui at RG?

I thought that was an interesting development. Do you think that Faneca might retire at the end of the preseason if it looks like he's going to get cut? I'm not sure the Cards can afford to carry a pure G as a backup.

I don't think anything at all. The coaches know exactly what they have in Faneca. Have been resting him all of TC already and they were barely a week in. Much ado about nothing IMO.

Faneca, Washington, Fitzgerald, Beanie, etc. Who else are you going to suck the life out of.

Just stop already. The Law of Diminishing Returns is starting to apply

I agree. Jody Jackson was interviewing him and he mentioned that it was nice to play for Whiz & Grimm because they take care of the older guys.

He looked bad last night. Did you see him blowing up holes for Tim Hightower? Because I saw second-and-eights on consecutive drives before the team essentially gave up on the run.

Shaun Cody and Amobi Okoye are solid, but they're not world-beaters out there.

I agree with K9. The guy looked done last night. Can't passblock at all this we knew. But he is just past it other than leadership and I would not loose one of the young guys to keep him. The line looked bad most of the night not just Faneca.

Not sure I could defend anyone on the oline last night. Dont know about Faneca, but he did not look good yesterday at all.

I said it in another thread and I'll say it again here: I wouldn't be surprised if Faneca either retires or is cut. I don't necessarily expect it, but it also wouldn't shock me.

This COULD be a possibility, but I didn't see enough plays last night from Faneca to make any determinations on his future. I think that you need a larger sample size that his scant reps in the first preseason game before we say definitively that he is done.

They pulled Breaston, Fitz, and Faneca. The first two are/were hurt. They kept the entire starting OL in through the entire first half.

That is nothing new or surprising. Coach Wiz always does that, he has done that the last 4 years he has been here. He wants to see both QB's competing for the job behind similar OLines.

Yes, I think they pulled Faneca early because they feel he doesn't need the work and wanted to look at other guys.

No, I don't think he's done. With all due respect,, K9, I have more faith in the talent-evaluating skill and judgment of Wiz and Russ G than I do mine, yours or other fans.

I'm also reluctant to make sweeping judgments about most players based on one or two series of downs.

You guys are making it sound as if K9 is saying he WILL be cut. Hes' just putting an idea out there. There's a lot of "ifs" in his statement.

ew. I just stood up for k9. I'm going to need a shower. ;)

I think if they had doubts about whether Faneca could play anymore, he would have stayed in longer. I think the fact he came out after two series is a sign of his security, not a sign the Cards lack confidence.

that said, I have real doubts as to how good he'll be for us.

Agreed! It's just week one of the preseason tho and lets see how he performs this week. Still three preseason games yet to go.

I hope it is just training camp, but personally I think Faneca has looked really bad at camp and last night. Maybe he is just not a practice guy. I personally was stoked at the signing and shunned off the talk of how much the Jets did not want him in that they ate all that cash just to get rid of him. But now I can say I really am wondering.

Fortunately. Even more than the changes at LB and DB I've been concerned about the wholesale makeover of the offensive line. They'll need that time to gel.

This is one year where I'm glad the NFL didn't go to 18 games because, unlike last season, I think the Cards will really need all four preseason games.

A 180 Degrees Opposite Theory

While I agree with those who feel Faneca was taken out because he's a known quantity, here's an opposite take (just to rattle the cage):

They wanted to see how well Levi (& possibly Keith on the other side) would do in protection without having Faneca's experience & guidance to lean on.

Reggie Wells is in his 8th season so shouldn't he also be providing experience and guidance?

I still think that the Cards should go back to last year's line with Bridges,Wells,Sendlein,Lutui and LBrown. That group helped the Cards score 45 points against the #2 defense in the NFL last season.

But then how can you argue with a line coach who is in the HOF? :D

The "ifs" will turn into... "As I said..." if the opportunity arises... ;)

Yes. The coaches were probably really impressed by both two yard runs on first down and two quick two and outs.
