Mini Camp Notes 4/2/4
According to Dennis Green, everyone was there except for Big and Wendell Bryant. Wendall is finishing up a class for school, is flying back to Phoenix tonight, and expected to be there tomorrow.
I know what Jurecki reported -- and I'm sure if he said it, Leonard said it. However, please remember these guys can get frustrated at times, especially after a long hot day of practices, and if you ask the wrong question at the wrong time, you might get something a player wishes he could take back - or misunderstand him. Coach Green told us Leonard had a family problem.
He did tell me that this camp builds on the work started in the previous camp. The drills look familiar, with perhaps a new bit added here or there. Ron McKinnon was there - and got a nice pop on Kevin Kasper - who did not, by the way, drop the ball. Kasper went to the ground, but never let it go. He continued to catch everything thrown his way.
From my very amateur viewpoint, the receivers looked very good. Very few drops.
Freddie Jones missed his first one -- and then got that determined look on his face and made up for it on the next play with a great move that got him open, and raced through defenders toward the end zone.
Josh McCown looks confident, poised, and relaxed. He's playing catch with Dennis Green while awaiting his turn as Shawn King takes a few snaps. Josh's armstrength is all anyone could wish. He also has studied the playbook backwards and forwards.
I fell into conversation with one of the press guys -- a very knowledable fellow -- who told me a story on Jake Plummer. Shanahan was quoted as saying Jake was going to be great just as soon as he learned the playbook. Sadly, that halfway though the season.
Lastly, Rod Graves heads out to talk to Dennis Green for some time on the field, making all us reporters wait a few minutes. These two seem to be friends, working together (and needing each other) to bring this team into the ranks of 'playoff contenders'.
There may some players not entirely happy with voluntary training camps, but as they come off the field, I'm seeing a lot of smiles as well.
