They are keeping the players they think might be tradeable till the deadline.

Only surprise on this list to me is clemons, he looked pretty good in preseason - but he did have the domestic violence thing, and then their is the need for special teamer linebackers so I guess it isn't that surprising.

I think the reason is that Lamar Louis and Alani Fua beat Butler and Clemons out---backups have to be good on STs.

I read that Kerwynn Williams isn't practice squad eligible anymore so any team would have to sign him to their 53... there's a good chance he's available all year long in case we need to call on him again.

The only position we bring in on active roster is a CB. We are actually solid everywhere else - let that sink in for a moment.
Agree that the team did its due diligence to add depth to CB. And no, bringing back Powers wouldn't have been a solution.

You must think I'm Bodha...

My concern it this, an injury to Peterson at the moment could wreck any thought of even possibly making the playoffs... our current CBs are so raw, opposing offenses see blood lol

Agree with this, but I also believe if PP goes down we're screwed regardless. I'm assuming we're talking about winning the SB, and without Peterson I don't think it's possible, regardless of the depth behind him.

PP can take away a #1--completely erase him--with him on the field we can roll coverage to the other side, so I'm not that concerned with whatever warm bodies we put alongside PP. I consider PP to be a modern Rod Woodson or even Deion--does anyone have a clue who played alongside those dudes? Names? Stats? Didn't think so, it's almost irrelevant--because even the best #2 CB playing alongside PP is going to get thrown at repeatedly all season and give up some plays occasionally, I suspect.

It's not just rolling or shading coverage opposite PP that's going to tighten up our pass defense--our QB rush is going to be vastly improved over last year. If we increase our pressure by .5 or 1.0 seconds, that's a tremendous difference when you're talking about a QB going through his reads and trying to find the WR our #2 is covering. We're not going to be required to blitz as much to get that pressure, so there's another defender on the back end who would have been rushing.

Hand wringing is what we do--it stretches the fingers so we can unwad our panties.

Seattle can say the same thing - Sherman goes down - their defense takes a huge hit. The other CBs are average (at best)

Completely agree. I think the danger with our team is we play more man to man than Seattle. At least Seattle can minimize the damage by the zone defense they play. Sure, they'll give up some catches, but the WR is going to be tackled hard after he catches it. They just pound offenses all game, for 4 quarters. Teams lose to Seattle and always say, "But we racked up 500 yards on offense," or some nonsense. Doesn't matter. If you get beat down and pummeled and lose, it's for nothing. They lose Sherman and that zone is still effective because they almost always have a safety over the top.

Our issue is man to man in this example, if we lose PP...our whole defense has to change and even then we're not going to be effective.

I'm really perplexed that we went into the season depending on Bethel, who was unimpressive and coming off injury, and a 3rd round rookie who only played the position for 1 year in college.

I don't think it might means we'll be terrible or any nonsense like that that I'm sure some will project on to the above, but man, that spot is going to be super super rough, IMO.
kinda takes away from how special Badger can be out there if he has to spend his time babysitting CB2

Disagree completely, I think that's exactly what makes him special. Badger can cover his man and the areas around him. He has exceptional range all over the field. He can recover off his man to disrupt passes outside of his assignment because of his range. That's what makes him special. That's precisely why BA calls him the "Swiss Army Knife".

I heard something that Charlie Casserly said on NFL network a while ago that was interesting to me as I'd never considered it. Teams make their 53 man roster after every preseason game rather than waiting until after game 4 to make it. They are essentially making their cuts as they go along and finalize it the next morning after watching the game 4 film. Helped me better understand what BA said about 12 players fighting for 4 roster spots. Makes it easier for The Turk to deliver the sad news to those being cut also, which is what the original question was to Casserly prompting this answer.

There is no "turk". That's Wolfley speak on the radio for something that happened 30 years ago. I very much doubt his recollection of events, but even so, nowadays it's done in an office, with computers, with the coach, face to face. Give me a break already with this "turk" biz. Give me a break with Ron Wolfley already.

Jesus, I mean, I love the snot-bubble hard-nosed football I grew up with but get a grip. He makes it silly, all that badassery, he turns it into a joke, almost a cartoon. That's not the football I grew up with.

He's a joke.

Someone still has to lead the guy to the coach/gm's office where the axe falls. You see it every year on Hard Knocks. Usually it's some kid trainer or quality control coach.

I am saying our other corners are not even average at this point lol
As usual it all comes down to out defensive line. If we can get any type of push then you can fake your way around a sub par secondary. We traded away a 1st round pick offensive guard to get a guy who's supposed to be the tonic here. Hopefully he can come through.

I get that, but it's still TV. Hard Knocks is nothing more than Survivor to me. Which is nothing more than Dancing with the Stars or Top Chef. It's not true reality dude.

I don't watch hard knocks but they still go through the process for the cut downs. I was listening to a radio interview, it might have been with Ross Tucker, I'm not sure, and he was telling about an incident he had while talking to Cowboy's starting SS Barry Church after the 3rd preseason game.

As they were talking a clubhouse guy walked by and Church visibly flinched. He was asked what that was all about and Church said that's the guy that comes and gets you when you're cut. The interviewer laughed and said your a starter with the 2nd most tackles on the team.

Church was an undrafted free agent and still has the worry of being cut his first year. He said he hid in the bathroom his rookie year. He knew it was irrational but in his mind he felt if they can't find me they can't cut me.

Until BA feels the need no sense in dumpster diving right now.

But in all fairness, this is where the scouting Dept comes into play. Before the draft if there were any players on the radar that went to another team and they didn't work out for any reason you scoop them up. If we don't get any players for at least a PS you can mark it down as blind luck or laziness.

Lawson is not done but after the DWash mess the Cards won't touch him. The "Turk" started long ago and most teams do have someone designated to tell the rookies. Most teams treat their vets specially.
