People are saying he is a checkdown charlie because Petzing is scared of him turning it over. My point is - if that is true that is a Petzing problem not a Kyler problem because under Kliff he threw downfield more often and was successful at it.

I will admit in the 2 or 3 really meaningful games Kyler has been in, it does seem like he choked. But that is so few chances it is not enough for me to conclude he will always choke.

Yeah we are 38-57 since drafting him, but you can't tell me with a straight face we were ever better than average talent wise, and most of that time well below average talent wise.
No. Those are two different topics. Kyler is checkdown Charlie when it’s time for a big play that needs yardage. That’s not scheme. That’s kyler not maximizing the play design for a first down/touchdown. In addition to that some posters believe that petzig may be calling more conservatively because he’s afraid kyler can’t execute. That’s different than kyler checking down. I’m skeptical of the latter, but 100% certain kyker is the checkdown king.

Also, 2-3 games?!? I wish I had your long term memory loss. There have been 5-6 games where kyler had a chance to clinch the division or a playoff spot or take control of the division race (Seattle game) or an actual playoff game. He pooped the bed bin every one of them. EVERY SINGLE ONE. There’s not even an outlier to cling to desperately.

And his teams have had some league average talent. A league average team with a terrific QB should be a semi-regular playoff team. The cards have not been under kylers “leadership.”

I don't think this is anything to do with Petzing. There are always routes past the sticks on 3rd and long, Petzing doesn't decide where the ball goes.
But he does frequently call draws on 3rd and long. That’s just not giving the offense an opportunity most times. I mean, I’ve obviously soured in Panicman Checkdownberg, but petzig isn’t beyond rapprochement in regards to his conservatism.

What pisses me off when they call a running play on 3rd and long is that Petzing is throwing away the chance at an easy first down. How many illegal contact penalties get called? Only five yards, but an automatic first.

There's a nonzero chance that Kyler sees 2-deep or whatever and checks into a draw play. Petzing of course is gonna stand by Kyler in his Wednesday press conference. We have been successful with that (Demercado scored a TD on it), but that's obviously a low-percentage outcome vs. Kyler deciding him and his guy can find and beat a 1:1.

Agreed on nonzero. But you think he checks into that on a consistent enough basis that it’s a glaringly noticeable percentage of downs to us viewers? And if so, isn’t it incumbent upon petzig to maybe take that control outta his hands if he’s misusing that power? Petzig’s at play here for sure. I don’t think we can kyler-checkdown our way out of that reality.

Statmuse is garbage. They have bots scrape the net then return it as an accurate answer.

That's just season completion percentage. Nothing to do with deep ball accuracy. Nobody has percentages that high on deep balls. 50% would be great.

Looks like we really suck at getting separation! Wilson is average, everyone else sucks

There is so much that goes into "separation" that it is tough to take that chart seriously.

I just don't think there are that many plays and we're overblowing a few high-leverage situations. According to PFR, the Cards have just 56 plays in a 3rd and 6+ yards situation. On those plays, we have 17 rushes (for 9.6 YPC) and 35 passes (54% completion percentage for 4.05 YPA with an interception and four sacks).

Statistically a rush is a better choice than a pass right now. Jeebus.

Where is your data then?

Kyler is 22nd in Yards per catch. He's 26th in Intended Air Yards Per attempt. Per PFR.

I’m guessing 30% rushing is incredibly high for that down and distance.

And that rushing number is likely incredibly inflated by demercado’s endzone gallop and the number of rushes that occurred when it was like 3rd and 15+.

Finally found a good site and yeah, Kyler's numbers are bad in a lot of places. He is 8th in the league in completion percentage with play action, which seems to be disappearing.

Lol I just saw what was typed. First time I tried voice to type.

You don’t believe in reconciliation between the nation of Kylerland and The kingdom of Petzigburgh?
I like how you first claimed that I was wrong before actually re-reading what you had written! #SignOfTheTimes

Hard to get separation within 6 yards. Separation stats are recorded based on how much separation you have at the point when the ball arrives. It's why Rondale Moore used to have high numbers, because he was 5 yards behind the LOS. Most of these guys are being targeted very quickly, so no time to get significant separation.

Marv is the only guy with an aDot over 10 yards but Marv gets the vast, vast majority of his targets in man coverage and very little in zone that would normally boost his numbers.

Well first, literally the eyes of everyone here. We have all seem Kyler pre 2022 and post 2022 and there is a clear drop off in his deep ball accuracy. It was one of his strengths and it's now a clear weakness.

But also, an analyst called Johnny Kinsley ran a project called "The deep ball project". He retired it after 22/23 as it was a lot of work for little reward. But in that year Kyler ranked 27th with only 38.8% accuracy on passes over 20 yards. For comparison Geno Smith won it with 63%. Kyler was sandwiched below Zach Wilson and above Carson Wentz.

His completion percentage was only 25.6% which was 3rd worse in the league.

This was after being 61.2% accurate as a rookie in 2019 (1st), 57.69% accurate in 20/21 (4th), 57.41% accurate in the 21/22 season (7th).

He's actually got worse every season but was still very good in his first 3 years. Then he had a huge drop off in 2022 and hasn't recovered. The newer stats aren't there, but we can all see it.

The Never Murray’s have turned this into another K1 topic which is on brand.

The Petzingsplaining is off the charts in here.

There is zero reason that McBride shouldn’t have multiple TDs by now. Zero reason why he wasn’t targeted for an entire half. Zero reason that McBride should be running 5 yard routes short of the sticks or end zone.

Zero reason CHJ shouldn’t be getting schemed open early to get him going.

Zero reason to be running draws on 2nd and 19 then running again on 3rd and 12.

Zero reason Demercado should be getting touches at all over Benson.

Zero reason to be calling less bootlegs, less designed runs, and less rollouts.

Zero reason to be calling plays setting up for FGs instead of trying to get touchdowns.

Petzing is squandering talent at a level never seen on an NFL roster.

Is Petzing strapped with Kyler or is Kyler strapped with Petzing?
Was Kingsbury strapped with Kyler or was Kyler strapped with Kingsbury?

Seems there is one common denominator.
With no deep receiving threat and a mediocre middle of the Oline it would be hard for any QB to look great. That said Murray still lacks composure and that second interception was a rookie mistake. I still think he’s good enough to win with but the coaching needs to be more demanding. It was one thing to speak highly of Murray as Gannon did while taking over. It’s quite another to tolerate a lack of presence and leadership. Time to start pressuring Murray if Murray wants the job. I’m bringing in a veteran backup next season and adding an ultimatum. Murray either seizes the job or moves on.
