Okay, I've got to go home now. By the time I check the board tonight I want this thing to be signed, sealed and delivered. Make it happen. Got it?

Anyone else here see the irony of releasing T. Jones, him riding the trade-go-round to Chicago then the Bears sending A. Thomas to us? Who's getting screwed here?

If Thomas can't beat out Jones I'm worried.
I thought T Jones looked a lot better in tampa.. he may have grown and learned a bit so. Plus they are different styles so I could see why Lovie would want Jones over A train.

A CONDITIONAL 2nd rounder would be good, assuming things like he plays in 14 games and gets at least 500 yards. He could be Green's new Leroy Hoard!

Let's look at this from a dollars and cents perspective. Chicago just gave the farm for Ogunleye. Thomas is signed thru 2004. Maybe they felt that his status next year as a FA was such that they might as well get something for him now and live with Jones. Makes sense.

I wonder how much Bob Wylie would like the train running behind his o-line?

If true I think it is a big factor. He is always saying we need to play smash mouth football.

As for Jones being better then Thomas, or Jones beating out Thomas for the starting spot, like someone else said Angelo does not like him, They switched their O philosophy which is more suited for a Jones type back, plus Thomas is pissed about playing second fiddle to Jones even Thomas deserved to be the starter.

I'm all for this if Green thinks we can win this year with our cuurent cast + ATrain. If A-Train means the difference between a 4-12 and 6-10 campaign I 'd rather keep the 2nd round pick. Now if it's a 3rd round pick I'd do this deal in a second but only for a third rounder. Although he's nothing spectacular, A-Train is a definite upgrade over our current crop of RBs.

I thought A-Train was out for another month with a pulled abdominal muscle. I doubt we'd give up a 2 for a guy who can't even play right now.

Something I thought of is that maybe Green and Co. view the upcoming draft two fold;

1) The RB draft class is not as deep as this year and the Cards would not be able to get a top RB in the second BECAUSE

2) Denny and Co believe that RB is not the most pressing need requiring a Rd1 pick.

If the guy came in and had a decent year it would be worth it. He has got to be hungry to prove someone wrong for giving up on him. I really cant see why they would ever let him go, but hey their loss is hopefully the cards gain.

I dont think a conditional 2nd rounder would be too much. I mean if he comes in and has 1000 yards, then he is will worth a # 2 because that would eliminate the need for the Cards to go after one in the draft at #1.

I dont think you are giving him enough credit. Last year behind a make shidt oline and now passing game he still rushed for over 1000 yards and a 4.2 average in just 13 games and only 1 fumble(of which wasnt lost). If he had played all 16 games his projected stats would have been over 1240 yards.

But I do got to say if this is true then upper managment better work their butts off extending his contract. If he comes here only to leave at the end of the year it is a waste of a draft pick.

This MIGHT be worth looking at, given some certain circumstances.

First of all here's what Mike Mulligan wrote about him in this years Sporting News Football Annual.
"Incumbant Anthony Thomas, the 2001 Offensive Rookie of the Year, has a downhill, straight-line running style. Thomas strictly is a between-the-tackles type who lacks the vision and burst to produce long runs. The Bears replaced him because he leaves yards on the field and has to stop and gather himself in order to catch the ball. But Thomas is steady and sturdy with excellent ball security,an area that is a major concern with Jones..."

He doesn't seem to fit much into Denny Green's historical mold.

The team does lack that type of runner right now, so I could see him doing some spot duty...IF Green adapts his system a little to do that...
I guess the 64$ question there is, just how much would he fit and how much is he really worth in that role?

Personally I don't see Green radically modifying HIS system to fit Anthony Thomas.

As someone to spell Emmitt, and short yardage situations, yeah. But again I don't see building an offense around him. And I don't think he's worth a real high price to do that.

I just don't see this as any big block buster, save the Cards move, no matter what.

Could he help? yes maybe....IF the price is right.

He is expected to see time the last preseason game. But I agree it does sound odd that we would send a 2nd rounder for a guy that cant even play with the team for real until Game 1.

Bingo, I saw him against the 49ers, love the kid, has really good feet and seems to always get yardage.

Really liked him, wrote it in a post over the weekend in fact.

Hasnt most of our runs so far in preseason been between the tackles?

If you look at the backs Green's had he seems to find a way to use them regardless of their styles. Until Smith took off he got contributions from all sorts of different types. Hell Amp Lee caught 71 balls for him one season and only had 69 carries that year.
Green seems to find a way to utilize different backs, so I'm not too worried about his system just yet. I'm sure he'd like to have a Robert Smith clone, but he managed pretty well without Smith for a number of years.

i have to fully agree. The system DG uses needs a slasher type back. one that sees the whole open, not make it himself. if Green plans to stick w/a base 3WR set, Thomas is no good to us, except name recognition. We don't need that, we have Emmitt for that ;)

Doesn't look real good, at least not good enough to give up a pick in the 30's next season...

Wed Aug 25 2004 - The Bears have been holding Thomas out of practice because of a sore abdomen. The Chicago Sun-Times reports the problem is so bad that Thomas is having trouble sleeping.

Tue Aug 24 2004 - Anthony Thomas revealed Monday that he has been out with a torn oblique muscle. The team previously called the injury an abdominal strain. Thomas will try to return to practice next week in hopes of being ready for week one. But this is an injury that can linger.
