It should be a more exciting defense. I don't yet know if it'll be more effective, but it could pose it's problems for offenses. It's not like we're matched up in the NFC East of the last twenty years anymore.
At this point in the league I'd sacrifice some size for speed on defense. Of course my master plan on offense would be to capitalize on that with maulers on the o-line and about 40 carries a game, but hey.

One thing the D has lacked, for years now, were big plays. I don't think we'll do too much better in the yardage category, but we might do a lot better in sacks and turnovers. That'd be a step in the right direction. Let's face it. We were not going to be a great run defense with Bell and Tanner.

I would think it is more like this:

UT - Dockett, King
DT - Bryant, Davis

No way does king even come close to the DT spot with his weight. Bryant and Davis are the stoutest of the 4, and both over 300 lbs.

Excellent comment in todays EV Tribune, by Dave Brown (Brownie Points) who generally writes a pretty lame column...

"My first thought was, "these guys have been contributors." Then my second thought was, "yeah, but contributors to what?"

:stupid: I think that this pretty well sums up the issue!

I think that this is a great move on DLine. Bryant and Davis had better Wunderlich scores than Tanner and Bell. That's important.

No doubt. You simply cannot measure the value of the Wunderlich, the Wonderlick or even the Wunderlic. I can't even spell it, and I have no shot at making it in the NFL. It's that important.

Actually spelling the name of the test is the very first question on the test.:)

I don't know Jeff for a guy his size, Davis is getting blown up in the running game
That was precisely the point I was trying to make.

One other thing - all the other DT's everyone are so high on - Dockett, King and (assuming he gets his act together) Bryant - are not prototypical NT types. They're more penetrating one-gap Under types and not big enough or stout enough to anchor against the run.

The few plays I've seen Davis make have been from behind in pursuit. He invariably plays too high and gets outleveraged by his opponent.

To my mind, this leaves us without anyone who can play NT satisfactorily. We have to hope Denny and Rod bring a couple of quality guys in.

Final (separate) point - I'm beginning to realize that Denny is a master at "coach speak." Remember his initial comments about having too many guys on the roster who were development types and that we needed guys who could play now? Well, now he's talking about cutting 5 vets "in order to give the young guys a chance."

Maybe Denny sincerely believes those new guys are ready to step up and play right now, but there's something that doesn't square here in light of his earlier comments.

Final Final - Vikesfan - I tend to agree that you've got to respect someone with Denny's track record and "he's the only coach we've got." But when certain moves seem a bit (how to say it) "out-of-synch", there's nothing wrong with at least raising a written "eyebrow."
I will tell you one thing don't pay much attention to what DG says to the media. Remember his praise of Blake. He will say anything he feels is suitable at the time. He will use cliches etc. He doesn't care what he says to the media and likes to keep things secret for the most part. So take everything he says with a grain of salt. He is not a media coach he is a winning coach. The moves he makes are those he thinks will win games and what he says to the media doesn't matter. Regarding this statement he is pretty dead on he wanted to draft guys who could start and it looks like he and the DC and Deek think Dockett can.

I just found out Dennis Green scored a 6 out of 32 on the Wundurlique.

We're screwed.

I wonder if Marino is interested in coaching?

Eric Crouch wouldn't be a bad pick up. He's a strange one, but who knows. Worst case scenario he's camp fodder.

Packers Release S Eric Crouch

posted 06/02/2004

Eric Crouch

The Green Bay Packers Wednesday released safety Eric Crouch, GM/Head Coach Mike Sherman announced.

Crouch, 25, returned to the Packers' active roster as a safety March 23, when Green Bay reinstated him from the reserve/retired list. He originally joined the team as a quarterback on waivers, April 23, 2003, after the Rams waived him as a receiver. Then, just before 2003 training camp, Crouch opted to retire and went on reserve/retired, July 22.

Drafted by St. Louis in the third round of the '02 draft, Crouch won the 2001 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback at Nebraska. He played in one 2002 preseason game for the Rams, as a receiver and kick returner, then retired after a series of injuries, Sept. 12, 2002.

Let me see if I get this straight.... we CANNOT believe it if Coach Green says it to the media.... Does that mean that we CAN believe anything that Coach Green keeps to himself...

I agree. We had a media coach here the last couple of years...!!! And as you all know that really didn't pan out now did it?

This is in contradiction to what has happenned so far in FA and draft where Green did exactly what he was telling everyone...
