Why are we looking at cutting players we recently extended?
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K...

MJ said Green told him he didn't agree with all the resignings that took place before he came in.

I agree totally. Clement gets one more year. But Player and Hodgins could be gone IMHO.
Dumb question since it's about a kicker... But why would we cut Player? Is he making too much $$$? Hasn't he been a Pro Bowl punter the past few years. I know he didn't go last year but everyone kept saying how he was robbed. Just curious...

Sorry, just read that he makes about a mil. A lot of $, but a good punter is kinda important I think. Having an offense start way downfield is a plus for the D.

Russ,

We might finally get the guy you wanted all along!

Nope supposedly he's lost speed and he's still not a precise route runner and drops too many balls. Coming out he had speed, size and an ability to get deep and make plays, apparently he no longer does.

Antonio Smith?

Where does Antonio Smith fit in? I kind of got the feeling that DG was looking at him as a DT. We all agree he doesn't have the speed to play DE, but he has the frame to play DT and even played some DT in college. I felt he had the frame to play DT even more after I saw his picture when the rookies were visiting the new stadium site. He looked like a big solid dude to me. I know it's been said that he is tough and agressive and while he is slow for a DE, he just might be a good DT with an extra 10-20 lbs.

I just can't believe cutting Bell and Tanner and keeping Davis. I think those cuts are more surprising not because of who they were, but who they left still on the roster.

(sigh) someone pointed out that these guys were marginal performers on a bad team last year, and that's absolutely right. These cuts do not surprise me. I believe Davis is an option at the run stuffer DT, although he's pretty average.

I guess the depth chart will shape up like this:

Under: Bryant, Dockett

Stuffer: King/Davis, King/Davis/Wakefield

Certainly not going to strike terror into the hearts of DCs around the league, although it should be better than last year.

Nice cleaning job. Although I liked Lucas. Wendall must have really shown something in mini camps. I thought Russell Davis would be the first DT to be axed.

As far as other high priced players, cutting Clement won't be a surprise. Player's experience is huge and he is not a big cap liability, cutting him would not make sense unless there is a clear replacement available. There obviously must be something going on with Ray, otherwise he is obviously one of the better LB's we have, obviously.

I don't know Jeff for a guy his size, Davis is getting blown up in the running game
That was precisely the point I was trying to make.

One other thing - all the other DT's everyone are so high on - Dockett, King and (assuming he gets his act together) Bryant - are not prototypical NT types. They're more penetrating one-gap Under types and not big enough or stout enough to anchor against the run.

The few plays I've seen Davis make have been from behind in pursuit. He invariably plays too high and gets outleveraged by his opponent.

To my mind, this leaves us without anyone who can play NT satisfactorily. We have to hope Denny and Rod bring a couple of quality guys in.

Final (separate) point - I'm beginning to realize that Denny is a master at "coach speak." Remember his initial comments about having too many guys on the roster who were development types and that we needed guys who could play now? Well, now he's talking about cutting 5 vets "in order to give the young guys a chance."

Maybe Denny sincerely believes those new guys are ready to step up and play right now, but there's something that doesn't square here in light of his earlier comments.

Final Final - Vikesfan - I tend to agree that you've got to respect someone with Denny's track record and "he's the only coach we've got." But when certain moves seem a bit (how to say it) "out-of-synch", there's nothing wrong with at least raising a written "eyebrow."

The only problem I have with Player is that single bar face mask. As a punter, I think he should stay. He was key in some of the Cards wins last year with some good, deep punts.

When it comes to the cuts of Bell and Tanner, I'm sure they were done at the behest of Pollard and Pendergast. I seriously doubt that Green pulled the trigger with no input from them.

Pollard did not "care for" Bell, and Bell knew it.

I would think it is more like this:

UT - Dockett, King
DT - Bryant, Davis

No way does king even come close to the DT spot with his weight. Bryant and Davis are the stoutest of the 4, and both over 300 lbs.

Excellent comment in todays EV Tribune, by Dave Brown (Brownie Points) who generally writes a pretty lame column...

"My first thought was, "these guys have been contributors." Then my second thought was, "yeah, but contributors to what?"

:stupid: I think that this pretty well sums up the issue!

I think you're on the money here.

I'm not sure what I think of this lineup...
I think the apparent upgrade on speed alone will help.

I just dont think this is has a chance of happening, and highly doubt this is in the plans. Smith was selected becuase of the big question marks looming over the strong side end spot, as well as depth issues. Plus Smith would have to gain 28 more lbs. just to get up to 300, and this team doesnt need another 300lb or under DT we already are set with dockett, king, and Bryant. And gaining 28 lbs. in just a few months is not good for the body, this would have to be inthe plans for next year if it were to happen.

The speed alone is a huge upgrade. IMO this isnt a dline built to glog up the line of scrimmage like a normal NT type would, but the point is to disrupt the play behind the line of scrimmage before the hole opens up. This puts a big load on the LB's which is why Green keeps saying we need an upgrade at LB.
