...or Sumlin didn't want it out there that he's looking at offers right before a huge game. This getting leaked by the ASU camp could hurt their chances of landing Sumlin.

A&M is apparently going to fire Sherman now. Apparently decision has been made. Papers in Texas all pushing Sumlin as their top candidate, but Fedora as 1B.

I guess now we'll find out if Fedora's schmoozing with Greg Byrne has any impact on Bill.

So, do you think Sumlin would prefer the A&M job over ASU?

The general consensus is that Sumlin would be a better fit at A&M. He is very familiar with that area, and has spent a lot of time coaching in the Big 12, so it might be a more comfortable situation for him, and he's at the top of their list. I can see Sumlin taking that job over ASU...

I'm having a hard time figuring out where A&M came up with the $8 million to buy out Sherman. They've been in the red for two years, still have outstanding loans from the general fund, and are not getting a huge bump in income by joining the SEC. They must've passed a hat. A Texas-sized 10-gallon hat.

If they offer Sumlin an SEC-sized contract, I don't see how he can pass that up. If they merely match ASU's offer, I think it becomes less attractive; he'll be recruiting against Texas and Oklahoma and competing against LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas. A&M's not in the class of any of those schools.

I know Sumlin is big on facilities. I can't provide any sort of honest assessment of where A&M stands on that. I imagine they're nice. I know he was blown away by ASU's facilities.

*shrug*

A lot to sort out here.

Rumors have Mack Brown retiring so that would open up another Texas job. Sumlin would have to be interested in those two jobs.

Those rumors have been lingering for weeks now. Allegedly Brown bumped up to AD with Texas bringing in Nick Saban. I know two intelligent, professional boosters who assure me it's all the work of a delusional fan base after an awful year.

When was Sumlin here?

Also, I thought the ASU facilities were not thought to be good enough...has that changed?

Sorry for the newb questions...I feel like such an outsider in this thread.

Rumors have Mack Brown retiring so that would open up another Texas job. Sumlin would have to be interested in those two jobs.

That rumor seems a little iffy at this point:

On Thursday afternoon, a radio host from Topeka, Kansas (yes, apparently there is both radio and the internet in Kansas now) tweeted that a source had revealed to him that Texas head coach Mack Brown will retire following the Baylor game on Saturday. Not even multiple sources. Just a source. Not even a source close to the program. Just a source.

This Jake Labahn person, whoever he is, tweeted later that his source is a member of the coaching fraternity, but still, it seems odd to the point of not being believable that such a major breaking news story would come from Topeka instead of making a start on the Texas message boards. Or even emerging from somewhere other than the media entities that cover Texas. In Austin. Not Kansas.

My head is spinning with all the different factors and scenarios. I will sleep well tonight knowing that Lisa Love is on the case! :sarcasm:

Sumlin was here for the one-back summit hosted by Mazzone. A year later, Sumlin hosted it in Houston. The one-back summit is an annual gathering of one-back coaches (mostly at the college level) to exchange ideas and go nuts on the chalkboard stuff.

Sun Devil Stadium is approaching dumpster fire levels, but everything else is almost brand spanking new -- weight room, locker room, film room, practice bubble. It's competitive with most any program in the country. ASU plans to address the stadium issue with at least $150 million in bonds sold with the $500 million stadium tax district as leverage. I don't know if they'll use that to fix SDS or build a new one. If you ever get Crow to give you a straight answer on that, please let me in on it.

Thank you very much for the info. :)

I hope they refurbish SDS...the location is just too perfect to waste.

I wonder if they could rent Chase Field for a season or two, blow up Sun Devil Stadium, rebuild a new stadium in the same location and be awesome.

It's been a few years since there's been professional football at UoP stadium. Maybe they could play there.

Every time i hear Bellotti's name brought up the only negative I hear is that Erickson was a similar age. Who cares, they are different people. Let Bellotti right the ship and then pass it off to a coordinator of his choosing. I prefer proven over a coin flip.

This is exactly what they need to do but the talk is of building an olympic village with the stadium as the centerpiece where Karsten currently sits. I love where Sun Devil Stadium currently sits, only Provo has a cooler location, but it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

If anyone was uncertain if Erickson had a passion to coach, Bellotti clearly has none. He lost it before he got pushed out at Oregon. My read is Bellotti build his 8-3 empire thinking he could rest his laurels on that for 20 years. He forgot Oregon booted Rich Brooks for essentially the same "sin." Since he's been gone he had pursued no jobs, and simply enjoyed the attention he's received by having ADs come and kiss his boots. Some local reporter calls, Bellotti sighs and says he's content where he's at, and the AD moves on. Bellotti gets his ego stroke and he's happy.

NFW. NFW. Not at ASU.

I like your answer. It is a hell of a lot better than he's old like Erickson

Surprised no one's mentioned the SportsbyBrooks "report" with a "source" saying ASU had $4 mil per to offer Sumlin.

Funniest piece of fiction I've read since the last Douglas Coupland novel.

That number would only make sense if it is Sumlin+assisstants salary.

Lots of numbers floating around that aren't accurate. I previously reported Sherman's buyout to be $8 mil. The problem is Sherman never got around to signing the contract for the raise and extension he agreed to last summer, so instead his buyout was more like $4.5 mil.
