With Sumlin most likely going to A&M now, I wonder who ASU will shift their focus to. I have a feeling Del Rio might be in serious consideration.

Not all is good in Aggie town:

A Monday meeting illuminated a split among A&M’s administration about Sherman, with athletic director Bill Byrne in favor of keeping him but meeting resistance from others at the presidential and trustee level.

One source said the disagreement was deep enough that Byrne could wind up retiring or being fired.

Would Sumlin want to walk into this mess? If Byrne isn't there, would he take the job without knowing who his boss is going to be?

If ASU doesn't get Sumlin and they didn't make a play for Leach.......they might as well fire Lisa Love now. IMO this would be a disaster for ASU. I guess you could still go after Chris Peterson but this situation is going to get really bad in just a matter of days IMO.

It's been a few years since there's been professional football at UoP stadium. Maybe they could play there.

If they decide to tear down SDS* I imagine they'd play at Chase, not UofP. UofP is far away and the scheduling could get tricky with the Cardinals. Though perhaps they'd play early season games at UofP, since there could be conflicts w/ the D'backs at Chase in September/October. I think Chase is appealing to ASU though because of the proximity to the Light Rail & ASU Downtown Campus.

*If they do tear it down, they'll build a new stadium in that spot. No matter what happens ASU will play between the Buttes.

You want to sell me on Sumlin? Tell me about who he's going to hire.

Do Noel Mazzone, Steve Brussard and Jim Jeffcoat do anything for you? No...hmmm....hopefully Love will pony up the Cash to bring in some quality assistants, I agree that especially with a young-ish Coach like Sumlin, ASU would really need a top flight staff.

I love Broussard. Jeffcoat will NEVER be a member of Sumlin's staff again. They hired him in hopes of landing his son, then bailed on him as soon as they could after his son chose Oklahoma. Jeffcoat is now at SJSU.

Sumlin's no longer a candidate. ASU broke it off with Armstrong. Starting over.

Wow.

Sorry guys, that sucks.

What really sucks is there was no Plan B. They're sitting around a table right now coming up with names, calling agents, basically starting from scratch. They've been working on the Sumlin thing since before they fired Erickson. They basically cleared the table, put down the good tablecloth, silverware and china, all so Texas A&M could eat the meal.

I guess they forced TA's hand. Wanted to know if they were walking into Houston prepared to shake hands or be shook down. TA blinked and ASU cancelled their trip to Houston.

Wonderful, another feather in our cap. On the bright side, I implicitly trust our negotiating group to make the right decision. At least they won't have to worry about "winning the press conference".

Appreciate the sympathy, although I can't say I'm too surprised. Sounds like ASU put all their eggs in the Sumlin basket, and rightfully so. He was one of the few intriguing and potentially realistic candidates out there.

Now we're going to end up with a retread or no name. The beat goes on.

Ah, memories of our own Jim Livengood except with Sumlin playing the role of Calipari and A&M being our Kentucky. We did end up with Sean Miller out of it though (thanks to Calipari talking him into taking the job) so there's still room for optimism for you guys.

We were at the same place after Calipari reneged and went to Kentucky. That's when it spiraled into Tim Floyd, Jeff Capel, Seth Greenburg, Jim Boylen territory. Fortunately for us boosters stepped in and Calipari made a call to Miller to convince him to accept.

Yeah, call me pessimistic, but I don't see a Miller at the end of the rainbow this time.

Like I said before, Mora Jr. or even English. Sumlin in my opinion is overrated.
