Other than Chryst what does your list look like? I liked Chryst and Manny Diaz for UA. Never thought much about the SEC coordinators because those guys never leave. I know UA had Derek Mason from Stanford on it's list at one point. The local kid coming home angle could work.
I'm not really in love with the field as it looks right now. It's a bad year to be hiring a coach. Someone will pick a winner -- someone always does -- but I don't see any clear choices. Even the usual dream picks like Gary Patterson look like they're fully locked into their schools no matter what the rumors because the Big East and Big 12 are giving away AQ status like it's penny candy.
It's a year I would look long and hard at the NFL assistants. The Bears are loaded with former ASU assistants starting at the top. But I know Martz prefers the NFL, and I inquired about Marinelli with Juan Roque. Juan thinks Rod M. wants to stay in the NFL to get rid of the taste of that Lions season out of his mouth.
Some of those NFL assistants I think are interesting:
- Mark Whipple, Cleveland Browns, QB coach. Whipple was a very successful small college coach (121-59 in 17 years, including a 1-AA national championship at UMass) before getting the NFL gig with the Steelers. He grew up in Phoenix and graduated from Camelback. Really smart guy with CEO kind of instincts.
- Darrell Bevell, Seattle Seahawks, OC. He's been in the NFL for about a decade now. He's 41 and an Arizona native. Was a hero QB at Wisconsin and got his start in coaching at NAU under Brad Childress. He's LDS, which is not my faith, but plays a somewhat important distinction in this region. He's ready to roll, IMO. The fact that he graduated from Chaparral CANNOT hurt recruiting at ASU.
- Mark Carrier, DL, NY Jets. Downside is he only spent two years in college (at ASU) before jumping at the NFL. He still has his house here and knows the lay of the land, both locally and regionally. He was by all accounts an excellent teacher and coach. He would be able to assemble an outstanding staff.
