Which is...

The boosters are not pleased about her coaching hires obviously, but there are some things in her personal life that rub some people the wrong way. Some people supposedly feel like that she throws her let's call them personal choices and values in their faces. Except I don't believe it is a choice.

It's always fun to read old threads like that (I wonder where DevilPrideBAS is these days?)

Funny how Erickson's career at ASU mirrored his time at Oregon State. He did well the first year with inherited players and then things went downhill in both places after that.

I always thought that Erickson was a phony. I hope he stays retired.

ROFL! Lisa Love just got an extension through 2014. And a pay raise with guarantees. And Crow's official seal of approval for the ABOR.

If we were waiting for a bad omen, this would be our strange-flying bird.

Well, it would leave only two jobs to fill (Erickson and Sendek) instead of three, the third being Love. I was sort of hoping Erickson could pull the Sun Devils out of the tailspin because of the 2012 recruiting class and because Love could have been replaced first prior to making other moves.

That Love thing is mind boggling if true. Seems like they're in such an easy position to let her go, just can her and slide Patterson over into the AD role. Not that he lit the world on fire with the Blazers, but ASU is in a horrible position and doesn't have much time to do a proper AD search while they try to find a Coach in a market with a lot of vacancies.

Actually, just got a clarification. Love got the extension in 2009 and it runs through 2014. Gah.

Yeah, personally I couldn't care less what she does in her free time. What I do know is that she's been a miserable failure with every one of her hires, and should be on the chopping block, not being considered for an extension/raise. What could possibly be the rationale?

I don't care what you do in your free time as long as it is not illegal. I wrote this in the Lisa Love thread but it is applicable in this thread as well:

If ASU wants to move forward as a program they need to get a new AD. You can have all the great hires and championships in non-revenue sports you want but the only two coaches that matter are football and basketball (and to a lesser extent baseball). Love has failed miserably with those two hires. I don't want her having a third crack at it. We need to bring in fresh blood to clean house and jump-start the program.

Had to read that old thread to see if I posted... I didn't, but at the time I was cautiously optimistic in the sense that I was at least hoping for the kind of immediate success he had at Oregon State, and then to worry about his other issues later. Didn't happen.

In any case, I think the landscape has changed a little bit since then, and I am *hoping* that Love has learned some lessons. Really like Matt's points about wunderkinds and headlines. I don't expect a younger coach to promise that ASU will be his last job, but if whomever gets hired is still there 8 years from now, with a clear progression, I think I'll be pretty happy in retrospect.

Here's Doug Haller's take from the AZ Republic

http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/DouglasHaller/149569

ASU's coaching search probably starts with Sumlin

Now that Arizona State has a coaching vacancy, let's look at some possible replacement candidates. ASU likley will want to go with someone young, someone who can energize the fan base.
*Kevin Sumlin, Houston.
Sumlin, 47, has led this season's Cougars to a 12-0 record and a possible BCS Bowl at-large berth. In four years he is 35-16, leading Houston to two bowl games. Only issue: Sumlin will be in high demand, so ASU will have to pay to get him. According to reports, Sumlin has a base salary of $1 million at Houston. He is under contract through the 2015 season. He is due a 9 percent raise for winning more than 10 games and could also get a hefty bonus for reaching a BCS game. All this means nothing more that he's due a significant raise that his next employer will have to pay.
*Larry Fedora, Southern Miss.
Fedora, 48, has led the Golden Eagles to a 10-2 record this season. In four seasons at Southern Miss, he is 32-19 with three bowl appearances. Before arriving at Southern Miss, Fedora worked at Oklahoma State (offensive coordinator), Florida (run-game coordinator, offensive coordinator and other positions) and Middle Tennessee (offensive coordinator). According to reports, he has a base salary of $900,000.
*Justin Wilcox, Tennessee.
Wilcox, 35, is in his second season as defensive coordinator at Tennessee. Last year, he was a candidate for the defensive-coordinator at Texas, but chose to stay in Knoxville. He is best known for his work at Boise State. In four seasons, he kept the Broncos on top of the WAC in scoring and total defense. Prior to coaching at Boise State, Wilcox coached linebackers for three seasons at California. He played at Oregon from 1995-99. Only downside: No head-coaching experience. He makes around $600,000 with the Vols.
*Mark Helfrich, Oregon.
Helfrich, in his second season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon, has helped keep the Ducks among the nation's-highest scoring teams. He has strong ties to ASU. From 2001-2005 he worked on Dirk Koetter's staff, turning the Sun Devils into one of the top passing teams in the Pac-10. Helfrich, 37, also has worked at Boise State and Colorado, where he once was the youngest offensive coordinator at a BCS school.
*Ron English, Eastern Michigan.
In 2009, English, 43, took over the Eagles and finished 0-12. This year he's 6-6, a pretty impressive turn-around. English gained national recognition during his time at Michigan, where he served as defensive coordinator. English also has ASU ties, having coached defensive backs on the staffs of Bruce Snyder and Dirk Koetter. He played at California.

Willcox would be interesting, he was rumored to be coming along with Bellotti as the coach in waiting had Arizona gone in that direction. The issue is whether or not ASU fans would be patient enough to let him get his feet wet. With Helfrich you may as well just bring Koetter back. That would be an awful hire.

wouldnt be suprised to see Ole Miss make a big push for Fedora.

Hadn't thought about that... Like ASU is the Pac-12, Ole Miss will always be middle of the pack at best in the SEC. So, I guess if you're gonna be middle of the pack, perhaps it's best to do so in the SEC vs the Pac 12...

Having lived in Hattiesburg Mississippi for years, one thing to know, they have a chip on their shoulder from the 2 other schools..

While Ole Miss will never be able to compete year in and year out for an SEC championship, ASU has a chance to be a PAC-12 contender every year.. If they just get it right...

That's highly debatable... Oregon, Stanford, USC and UCLA will always attract better recruits than will ASU.
I think the difference in terms of "being a contender" for both ASU and Ole Miss aren't all that great. And certainly the past 30 years or so of history proves that.

Fedora would be a great catch for ASU. That said, he'll still face the same issues Erickson, Koetter and the rest faced - talent challenges. Somehow, a guy like Fedora has to prove that he can win consistently, over a prolonged period of time (10 years at minimum), before ASU can be a legit contender for talent.

Stanford? You must be joking. Maybe you should check their record over the last 20 years. Stanford is certainly no football powerhouse.

UCLA will always be a hoops school, and they've had as many good football years as ASU in the past 10.

USC and Oregon? Definitely better, and should be for the long haul. After that, ASU should be able to be as good if not better than every other Pac school.

Agreed except for Washington has a much higher ceiling in my opinion. And UCLA should be equal if not better too just based on location.
