I had a dream last night that Iwoke up this morning and Erickson was told he had another year to "prove" himself...

I woke up dry heaving..

At this point, I like Sumlin.. I still have a pipe dream (though it is EXTREMLY small) that somehow someway, Kirby Smart will consider ASU...

That would be a DRRRREEAM.. And I read that he has told people close to him that he is leaving Alabama next year, the thought was Georgia (his alma mater) may be open but it looks as though Richt's job is safe, and if Ole Miss goes a different direction, I think it he jumps to a major conference, and the PAC-12 is...

Again, not likely, but possible

All of my connections begin at Alabama, where I'm from, and where family members have played and supported for four generations now. Kirby Smart is a man who lives in a small country-fried bubble. Even when he coached in the NFL it was for Miami. He has a very dire view of football played outside of the SEC and Florida, and especially the Pac. He'll never leave that bubble unless it's for the NFL.

Oh, I know that history. But did you know Sumlin is currently winning with Art Briles' recruits and Sumlin went 5-7 in the only year he didn't have Case Keenum at QB? Did you know that under Sumlin, Houston's defense has surrendered an average of 30 points a game?

I'm relatively certain Sumlin is at the top of ASU's list, but consider me disappointed we're focused on another coach who focuses on only one side of the ball. I remain baffled why people are so high on him. In a year with better candidates, he's a back-up plan at best.

Nice dig at Geep Chryst, even though I've been touting Paul Chryst. The Cards have been to the playoffs 3 times since they moved to Arizona, and Geep played a big role in one of them.

Not to keep harping on you but a couple of points:

1) UH gets the scraps that UT, OU, TAMU and other Big 12 schools leave behind so he is at a disadvantage from the get go. ASU does well in CA & TX in terms of drawing recruit interest but Sumlin will have to get some people with recruiting ties on his staff.

2) Sumlin is considered one of the hottest coaching prospects in the country by the media. If not ASU some other school will lure him away from UH. It's not just ASU posters who are in love with the guy. Unless a Gus Malzahn or John Chavis is interested, Sumlin should be a top the list. He can always hire DC that can help the defense.

That's probably the only name being mentioned that won't get a collective "Who?" from 95% of the public when the new coach is mentioned, though.

I'm not sure how important that is, but ASU may have to spend some time selling their new coach to their fans, especially after the UA hire.

UH gets scraps? The previous coach recruited amazing offensive talent. Those are nice scraps.

I know who's in love with him and why. Ask Michigan how that went with Rich Rod. Ask Colorado fans how that went with Dan Hawkins. As far as that goes, Ask Colorado and Washington (and now UCLA) how that went with Rick Neuheisel, who has been living on his "wunderkind" reputation for 20 years now. Ask Notre Dame how that went with Ty Willingham. Ask Notre Dame how that went with Charlie Weis. Hey, remember when Mike Riley was Mr. Brilliant at Oregon State? You could probably get him now at a cut rate. Or Jeff Tedford at Cal.

Those are just recent examples of flavors of the month. Coaches put together one or two surprising seasons or are just promoted quickly at a young age and they become the coaching version of the backup QB when the starter stinks, the most popular guy around.

I know the media well because I work in it. These guys all think in terms of PR. Was just talking some of the folks at the Republic. Work in the same building. They were all talking about how ASU needs to make a splash because ASU has to sell tickets and overcome the perception that UA made a giant leap forward with Rich Rod. There was no, "They should really go out and find a program builder" or "They should go get the best man for the job." They're thinking in terms of headlines for RIGHT NOW, not what the program might look like under that guy in five years.

I don't know about you, but I DO NOT want my school to pick their coaches based on that kind of mentality.

So if they're going to can Erickson tomorrow (as they should) what time would the press conference generally be announced? Sometime today? Tomorrow morning?

It seeems amazing that ASU may get a bowl invitation. But if they do, I say let Erickson coach it as a lame duck, knowing it is his last game. I don't see any downside there. You can still go full speed ahead in the coaching search.

What I find even more amazing is that UCLA, the Pac12 south representative in the championship game, is a win away from the Rose Bowl and a loss away from needing a waiver to play in any bowl game.

Which they aren't likely to get

Houston was playing with their 3rd string QB most of last season as well who was a true freshman. Any team would struggle. I have made my feelings known that I want Sumlin but they need to give him the cash to be able to go out and hire a good defensive coaching staff.

Is ASU willing to wait until after the Sugar Bowl to hire Sumlin? If so, that will give him about a month to put together a staff and try and salvage a recruiting class. I say that because I can't see him leaving Houston before their bowl game.

*forehead slap*

Coaches hire guys they feel comfortable with, not who makes the fans comfortable. He'll bring his guys, and he's in a position to say "No" if they try to make his contract contingent on their input into his staff.

I'm not saying that the AD needs to tell him who to hire but giving him the money to get guys is important.

Doubtful. The dude is toxic right now with the ESPN lawsuit still pending.

I wonder if Koetter is interested in coming back to college coaching. There are some openings out there that I think would fit him nicely. Not ASU obviously but Wazzu.

I wonder if he'd be willing to drop all of that if he were hired by a new school (not necessarily ASU, just in general).

I don't really want Leach at ASU, but it would be interesting. I'm feeling so depressed about ASU athletics at the current moment that maybe I'm resigned to being OK with things being just crazy and interesting, seems like winning consistently is a Quixotic dream.

I hear the coach from Illinois may be available. ;)

Wow, there must have been a misalignment of stars for these two teams. They both went into a tailspin going down the stretch. The movie "Final Destination" keeps coming to mind for some reason.

This is becoming a really bad year to hire a coach. Even though I am not as high on the Rich Rod hire as some, I am glad that Byrne got it done quickly as the names being thrown around for better jobs than Arizona are weak at best.

ROFL! Lisa Love just got an extension through 2014. And a pay raise with guarantees. And Crow's official seal of approval for the ABOR.

If we were waiting for a bad omen, this would be our strange-flying bird.
