The argument during the first part of this thread was really funny. First of all, no matter what argument was presented everyone was right. The good thing about the NBA is everyone plays the same amount of games so if Phoenix ends the season with 1 loss less then Miami or San Antonio, they have home court throughout. If We end up in a tie, then the tie breaker rules apply. I always look in the loss column because ultimately that is going to be the determining factor once all of the games are played. Yes, Miami and Phoenix are tied for the best record right now but since Phoenix has 1 less loss, they currently have the advantage as long as they keep winning. The game Friday will be huge because it will put Miami 2 games behind Phoenix in the Loss column (if they win) even though Miami will be only 1 loss back in the standings.

I've taken a poll about where people think the Suns will finish. Poll Everyone figures the Suns will win at least 6 of the remaining 9 with most (19 of 27) predicting no more than 2 losses.

This means the Spurs may have to win every remaining game to have even a chance of catching the Suns. However, 6 of their 9 games are on the road where the Spurs are only 19-16.

Do the Suns hold the tiebreaker over Miami or not? I know there was that "quote" from D'Antoni saying they did, but someone posted the actual list and it looks like Miami has it. I figured that maybe D'Antoni had been misquoted or was joking.

If Miami has the tiebreak, the magic number is still 7 over the Heat.

The Suns have the tie-breaker. I saw an article a few weeks ago, and it said the tie breaker between teams in different conferences is decided by

1) Who won the season series
2) Who has the better record against the opposite conference.

That is wrong, here are the rules:

TWO-WAY TIES

a. Results of games against each other.

b. Better winning percentage within own conference.

c. Better winning percentage within own division (only if tied teams are in same division).

d. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in own conference.

e. Better winning percentage against playoff opponents in opposite conference.

f. Better point differential between offense and defense.

Miami will hold the tie breaker against us.

Are you sure those are the tiebreaker rules for the finals and not just all of the conference playoffs?

I thought about that, but I cannot find a seperate set of rules for the finals so I assume it is consistant.

There is a different set of tie-breakers. It makes much more sense to compare records in opposite conferences too. If I find those tie-breakers I'll post them.
