I only one I have watched closely was Palmer who also tore his for the second time. Palmer said the second one was much easier to get through since he knew what to do and what to expect. I know they play different positions and Tyrann puts more stress on this knee, but for what it's worth.

Carson Palmer, complete reattachment of ACL after a December 11th injury. 34 years old at the time of the injury and missed no time.
Tyrann Mathieu, repair a torn ACL after a December 20th Injury. 23 years old at time of injury

No examples, just curiosity and blind hope. I remember several players coming back fast but not necessarily "being themselves" however I am also guilty of not paying attention to a lot outside of the cardinals. I remember culpepper being one of the first to come back faster than ever but I think that season ended quickly for him iirc

Wasn't he talking to Palmer on one of the later episodes of All or Nothing and calculating he'd be back in preseason. Meaning ready to start practicing. Obviously it'll take time to get in game shape.

I'm fairly confident in thinking that each year he is DPOY he gets 250K, which is still a sweet deal for the Cards.

Liking this contract more and more for the Cards. Yes HB is getting paid fairly but there are safety nets built into the contract in case of bad stuff happening.

Now they gotta win a superbowl before we lose half our team BC we cant afford all these huge contracts

Whatever, Keim knows what he is doing and finally we have a Front Office that knows how to allocate the money properly... this is not like blowing money on Duane Starks
Palmer same knee. Badger different knee and not as severe an injury.
Palmer a pocket quarterback and Honey Badger a roving secondary play maker... not a good comparison for what is expected from their knees, so I expect he will take a little longer but the guy is devoted to his craft and will get there sooner than later in my opinion

PFT Breaking Down the contract.

Inside Tyrann Mathieu’s unique deal

Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu’s unique circumstances led to a very unique contract.

PFT has obtained the full details of the contract signed by the safety who plays plenty of cornerback. They are as follows:

1. $15.5 million signing bonus, which is not tied to Mathieu passing a physical. (He’s still on the Physically Unable to Perform list after tearing an ACL last December.) That’s more than Vikings safety Harrison Smith’s signing bonus, and more than Seahawks safety Earl Thomas received in fully-guaranteed money at signing.

2. $1 million base salary for 2016, fully guaranteed at signing.

3. $4.75 million base salary for 2017, fully guaranteed at signing.

4. Salary of $5.75 million in 2018, not guaranteed at signing for injury or otherwise. On the first day of the 2018 league year, it becomes fully guaranteed.

5. Roster bonus of $5 million due on the third day of the 2018 league year.

6. Salary of $10.75 million in 2019, $8 million of which becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the 2018 league year.

7. $10.75 million salary for 2020, not guaranteed.

8. $9.25 million salary for 2021, not guaranteed.

9. $250,000 in annual workout bonuses for 2017 through 2021.

10. $250,000 incentive if named defensive player of the year in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

If every check is cashed (and if the workout bonuses are earned in every year), it’s a six-year, $64 million deal and a five-year, $62.5 million extension. Another $1.25 million is available — if he wins the defensive player of the year award five straight times.

As a practical matter, it’s a two-year, $21.5 million deal or, given that he was under contract for $1.5 million in 2016, a one-year, $20 million extension. He’s guaranteed $21.25 million even if he’s never able to pass a physical.

For the Cardinals, the protection comes from the complete lack of guarantees beyond 2017. They can move on at that point. If they keep him beyond the first day of the league year, another $13.75 million becomes fully guaranteed and, two days later, another $5 million is earned. So that’s $18.75 million over the next two years. Adding in the workout bonuses, he can make $40.5 million over four years.

Given Mathieu’s injury history, with two torn ACLs in three years, it would have been impossible to roll the dice on his contract year given the money that was on the table for 2016 and 2017. Then, come 2018, the Cardinals exclusively hold the power to decide whether to add two more years.

Wow cards are well protected in this contract. What a safe deal for both player and team. I'm impressed.

You make the mistake of thinking Keim is infallible.

Plenty of bust draft picks. And that Bethel extension isn't looking too great right now either.

I'm glad they've got him locked up, but IMO $40 mil guaranteed on a 5 year deal is quite steep given his injury history.
This is what I'm thinking as well. His injury history isn't good. I could see maybe half that would have been fair.

It is more like 2 years, $20 million guaranteed (which is only an $18.5 million increase to the team because the already owed him $1.5 M). After that, the team can walk away at various intervals if he continues to be injured or his performance goes in the tank. So while $40 million is "guaranteed" if he lives out the duration of the contract, only $20 million is really guaranteed for the next couple of seasons.

Seems like a great way to pay the man and hedge some bets for the team at the same time.

If that's the way it's set up then I like it for both parties.

Bethel got paid based on his projection of being a great #2 CB, not for being a special teamer.

So far hes so-so as a CB. Consistently banged up. 1-year CB Brandon Williams 4 days into camp is looking like he might overtake him in the not too distant future.

Not saying Bethel isn't a good player, but as of 8/3/16 that contract is looking bad

Realistically, the odds of us cutting him after this season were about zero, so even the first 21M was a given anyways. If he fully recovers this deal is going to look pretty awesome a few years from now!

He was average in his first year as corner, I expect bigger things this year.

Hes getting paid better than "average". With great $$$ comes great expectations. So when you don't reach those expectations, these are the consequences.
