It's early, but after 1 road game against an inspired 'Sonics Team, how do you all feel about the season. My takes in order of what I was impressed with:

1) Grant Hill - I love his passion and his smartness. He improves a near championship caliber team. My hope is he can play smart and injury free while keeping the drive going. It'll make us take the next step up.

2) Amare and Nash - Especially Amare is further along than I expected to see. He started off real slow and finished like dynamite. Steve allthough gearing up for the grind slower this year looked pretty much in season form allready. Amare needs to clear the Defensive glass better however. We're giving up too many Offensive Rebounds again. That's not only his responsability but the others have to box out better too.

3) Marion - This guy just eats up minutes and runs the floor very well. I've never enjoyed seeing him shoot much but his moves closer in are nice to watch. He should work his game inside more with his hops. If he could develop a short fade shot he could be devestating. But at this stage , I don't know if it's in him. (Hey Shawn, watch Larry Bird vids on using your body). I'd like to see him shoot the 3's less than in the past though. We have plenty of those, we don't need a #2 firing from there. Work the glass more. (See Ceballos).:)

4) Banks and Skinner - Nice contributions from these two. They seemed to outplay Barbosa and Diaw this game. Hopefully those two, it's only a matter of time. But if Banks in particular can be more consistent and shoot as well as tonight then we've got a nice bonus here. Hopefully he can run the team in spurts and have the help doing so as well. Skinner played good defensively and is physical. Like to see him keep being physical in keeping opponents off the glass.

5) Bell - Found his touch eventually. He plays hard and is the heart of this teams perimeter D. Obviously plays with passion and strong desire for results and wins. Will make a good coach some day.

All and all despite all the rumors and contoversy in the league heading into this season, no matter what develops this team is poised to take it to another level. I'd like to add a little more size to replace Thomas with, but it's rare that we'd use it much anyhow. But just in case it would be wise to have another physical body.

O/T: I think we might have seen the next superstar in this league last night.

Yeah - his name is Amare;)

I don't know about you guys but as much as I love what Hill brings and Banks stepping up, Amare was the biggest piece for me.

He looks as explosive as he did 2 years ago and if he doesn't pickup his thirds with 8 minutes left in the 2nd quarter he scores 30 easily last night. And when he doesn't get scared about fouling he looked a lot better on the boards and defensively IMO.

He was a big surprise for me last night. It didn't look like he was ready to go for a while there. Then he just starts to go off. He made that guy look sick at the end there when he made that move and jamed it home. He definately came on.

And yes he's allready a superstar.;)

good comments on amare

i was thinking the same thing

if i had slept for the last 2 years, i wouldn't have known the difference. the hops were the same from back in the day.

unfortunately, i have no idea what he's talking about with this 'all i can think about is defense' crap. if he has improved at all, he didn't show any of it last night, except that he doesn't jump up at the slightest pump fake...

playstation you know him not jumping at pump fakes could save him quite a few fouls considering he always used to bite and commit those stupid fouls.

Best thing I took out of last night's game was AMARE LOOKS SICK. It's hard to believe that a) he's seemingly as disgusting athletically as he was back in the day and b) that the dude JUST had surgery on the other knee a month ago. He's like the freaking Million Dollar Man! That's GINORMOUS!

Worst thing I took from last night's game was Hill shooting 7 threes. Dude's got incredible game still and DA needs to figure out how to abuse people with him.

1. I wish D'Antoni would leave Amare in with fouls, at least during the regular season. What better way for Amare to learn to play without fouling than to let him learn to play with the threat of fouling out looming over his head?

2. Everybody's complaining about Hill's 7 3-pointers, but I'm ok with it, for now. This is little more than a wild hunch, but I don't see any reason why Hill can't learn to hit threes as well as any other player if given the chance. If he can become a threat from 3, that will only help his driving game, since teams will have to play him closer at the perimeter. You can't tell anything from 7 shots, anyway. Wait until he's tried 70, and then you'll have some idea of his true percentage. The time to experiment is now, so go to it, I say.

I'm getting tired of this line of thinking. Ironically enough it seems as if two people, who may or may not be related, were watching the game and expressing the same sentiment.;)

DA isn't forcing Hill to shoot 7 3's a game. He is not directing players out on the floor. Yes that is going to be an added part of Hill's game this year (as it is for EVERY player on the Suns - even freakin Amare) but I think Hill was just open from 3 a lot and trying to show how well he meshed with the team. I bet next game he takes it to the rack ALOT more.

Lets stop killing DA after Game 1. Because the way I see it we will be building a statue of him come June....

* ok i just re-read that - your not saying DA is abusing Hill and his talents (although Ouchie said that in another thread) but my point remains. Its only Game 1

the point on amare is correct, even if he just stops jumping at the pumps he's gotten better defensively, but the major things that actually stop the other team from scoring, like fighting for position, boxing out, etc, i saw none of that...

the grant hill thing is absolutely nothing. i hope you guys know that grant hill has forgotten more about basketball than most of us will ever know. if he knows its not working, he'll stop. its not like marcus banks (or even marion) where the chief liability is between the ears.

huh? That DA's SYSTEM - have you not been watching for the last 3 years because the system DEMANDS that if you have the open three, you must take it otherwise the offense gets bogged down and it kills the spacing. By not tweaking it to suit Hill (at least as far as what we've seen in Game 1), it's fitting a round peg into a square hole, one I pray DA can adjust to, even though he's loathe to make adjustments.

it was a pretty alarming Game 1 though - something a lot of us feared would happen only to be told by the majority of people that we were crazy and Hill would never shoot 7 threes.
