This is where the arc has been headed the entire series. He's been calling them "Uncle Barney and Aunt Robin" as a pair many times since the first episode when he's talking to his kids.

I just think they are building towards the end of the series, which is coming either this year or next. Barney and Robin having a baby, Marshall and Lilly having a baby and Ted finally meeting his future wife has always = the end of the series as we know it. It has always been headed in this direction for the past 7 years.

I thought last nights episode was great, but that's just my take.

Thought that last reveal was awful. This is the jump the shark moment.

I agree.

Not quite the JTS moment, but it might be in retrospect. They have to be VERY careful here on out not to make mockery of the two of them, and not to get too heavy.

It should be inevitable now that it is Barney and Robin, because having Barney marry someone else out of the blue here would be ridiculous having this arc in play this close to the end of season timeframe.

Not hating it...it's kind of cliche for sure, and very risky of shark jumping...but it was an ep fairly devoid of laughs with a bomb at the end that IMO was unnecessary and kind of cheap writing.

I just watched a rerun of this show on the CW and it's hilarious, they have CGI'd in "The Muppets" movie posters all over the show. Ted walks in and sets his bag down next to a Muppets bag, then they walk by a muppets movie poster with Jason Segel on it,,, it's pretty funny. Subliminal advertising FTW!

She's cute! And adorkable too (clips on youtube).

I remember her from Sopranos as Johnny Sac's daughter.

Really idiotic how they're setting up more Robin/Ted drama. I mean, I hated that they ordered another season--it's sailed past the shark--but to dredge that stupid story line up again? Ugh.

Sorry I just don't get it. It seems so forced

They have to show her this season because next season is the last and that will be setting up their wedding. This is the girl who will make ted stay in New York.

WTF???

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/14/how-i-met-your-mother-season-9-plans-the-final-season-will-take-place-over-one-weekend

And to all the fans, on behalf of all of us writers, cast and crew: Thank you for sticking with us on this wild journey. Our ninth season will tell the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever. We hope you like it. Next stop, Farhampton...”

Catch that part about "the longest wedding weekend ever"? Yep, How I Met Your Mother's final season will take place entirely over the course of Barney and Robin's wedding weekend. That means that while there could be some flashbacks and flashforwards (and it would be odd to not have any, given the show has used both in the past a ton), in terms of the central storyline, while we have met the Mother, Ted still might not until far into the season; perhaps even the series finale.

Update: TVLine spoke to CBS president Nina Tassler and asked her about the plan for HIMYM: Season 9. She seemed to confirm that Ted himself won't be meeting the Mother for quite awhile in Season 9. Tassler said that we'll see, during the wedding weekend shown over the course of the season, “how each character, before Ted, meets the mother. So, they each meet her independently before he does.”

Just watched the finale wont ruin it for anyone and the backlash on twitter is strong. An ending I did not see coming and I wont lie I will turn in my man card because I did cry during certain scenes.

I liked (didn't love) the episode until that last minute. They've built up this perfect woman for Ted for 9 years, and then they basically gloss over her death in a couple seconds and reveal that it was about Robin all along. In one scene he's telling the kids about their mother's death and they cut to the kids who don't show any sadness at all and tell him enthusiastically to go after Robin. I get that it's been 6 years and they want their dad to be happy. But it had only been a few seconds for the audience and it would have been better if they did it just a little bit heavyhearted. The tone was too happy, when it should have been more bittersweet.

The more I thought about it after the worse I think it was and the past 9 years were a waste of time. I guess the writers could say the point of the story was to show the never ending love for Robin but that just makes me think about the mom and I actually feel bad.

Meh. Robin Ted is boring and never was interesting. However the mother was flat out awesome. Loved her. They were too flippant about her death (stupid) when she was pretty much teds perfect woman...for effing Robin.

The wife was in tears. We both really enjoyed the finale. If you look past the griping..which happens with every single finale....there were some nods and winks to great episodes and this was less about Ted-Tracy or Ted-Robin versus being about the relationships they formed, where they were and how they are now. That was one of the most underrated aspects of the episode. It's extremely realistic and relateable to what happens to even the best of friends.

I figured out what was going to happen after they made the mother ill. It was sort of sad though because we just decided we really liked the character. Again...I think that was the point...get the audience to like her and yank out the rug. Makes it more difficult for the audience as well.

One thing is for sure is that the Ted-Robin thing was planned from day one. If you look at all the scenes they filmed with the kids, it was obvious they had planned this from day one. All the scenes with the kids (including the end scene) were filmed towards the start of the show. Makes sense as those kids would no longer look the same all these seasons later. However, the ending was always gong to be Ted-Robin.

I agree with some of the above that the Tracy thing was rushed and that him circling back to Robin was glossed over but it was still one of my favorite finales. In the words of one Barney Stinson.....this little show that nobody thought would last ended up being pretty....wait for it...."Legendary".

Loved the elements of the finale. Wished they fleshed them out into an entire season, but then having Ted officially "meet" her before the final moments would have been a little anticlimactic.

And unlike Lost, no one can ever accuse the creators of not really having an ending planned from the start.

I loved the bittersweet ending. I just wish it wasn't so rushed.

The more I've reflected, the more I've hated it. Writers put themselves into a corner when they thought they'd have 4 years if they were very lucky, and shot that ending kids scene thinking it would be a sweet ending in a couple of years. Then the show hit big, went 9 seasons, and characters changed. They made Robin/Ted toxic and bad, and finally had him able to let her go (thankfully). They cast the perfect person to play the mother, with great chemistry with Ted.

And honestly, killing her off is ok. Very sad, and too little of her on screen. If they had ended that damn show right there under the umbrella, with their back and forth, with you knowing of her imminent death but seeing their absolutely awesome first meeting, that would have been a great ending for the show. Ditch the old kid footage you shot, and save it for a "alternate" ending for the DVD. But then they shoehorn in Robin, the kids are pretty flippant, and here we get "grand gestures" Ted with that freaking horn trying to hook back up again with Lots of Dogs Robin (Ted doesn't like dogs) and such. Ugh. SO AWFUL.

Someone on the soon to be gone forever TWOP posted this epilogue they fantasize happened after what we saw on screen, and I loved it so much. One more scene with the kids.

"Robin and I smiled at each other, kids. I couldn't wait to get upstairs, and we embraced like the end of an epic movie, and we kissed, and... I started sneezing, because I'm still allergic to all those damned dogs. She said she'd get rid of them, like she did the dogs she had when we first met, and that's when I realized: I don't want to be with someone who will turn her back on loved ones for whom she's responsible, even if they have four paws and make my eyes run. I don't completely trust her with you.

I loved the dream of Robin. But I loved the reality of your mother.

So I'm going to be happy as your dad, living in the suburban house your Mom and I made into a home. If I find someone truly loving and giving again, who doesn't spend most of her time traveling he world, your Mom would be happy for me, just as we both believed that, somewhere, Max was happy for her. Maybe someday, that person will even be Robin....

But wow, would she ever need a personality and priority transplant to fit into our lives.

Love you, kids.

Kill the mother, fine. But don't spend 7 years telling us Robin & Ted are no bueno, to the point I absolutlely believe it, then expect me to buy that it's all good now because somewhere magically offscreen Robin's changed. Stupid show.

Should have ended at the umbrella.

They already referenced her death earlier in the season when she was talking about robins mom and said what kind of mom would miss her daughters wedding and Ted starts crying.

yes, I know that. It wasn't a surprise. There was another reference when telling Ted to not live in his stories.

The death of Tracey isn't what made the finale awful. It was the shoehorning of Ted and Robin for the 1,000th time when it never was a good relationship after season 2. That was forced, awkward and wasn't where the characters were after the show ran much longer than expected...the should have canned that early direction and grown their endgame along with the growth they gave the characters.

It's nice to have your endgame written, but it's not good to have it so set in stone that it is disjointed with the story you wrote to get there.

Unreal.....the slap bet the Barney history...OMG....so much was freaking hilarious about this show. I guess people just have different taste which is cool. I know others that rave about shows and I feel the same so I can relate.

Hated the finale. (except for maybe 5 minutes of it)

Whole season was erased in 30 minutes.

Last two years as well.

But this show hasn't been good since season 4 give or take 3 or 4 episodes.
