You wont see either one of them fired soon. Think of contracts they have/ The Diamondbacks are not gonna give up on them this soon.

But Mel Stottlemeyer, Jr., definitely needs to be reassigned.

When a whole staff is underachieving, mostly from their performances of last season, it's not a problem with individuals. Just one -- the pitching coach.

Bring in Curt Schilling as pitching coach?

Boy, that would be a hoot, wouldn't it?

He could participate in the D'backs board again, just as he did on, if I remember correctly, ASFN's predecessor.

Yeah, bring the kid from Shadow Mountain HS back home. Johnson, Schilling and Gonzo on the same payroll.

According to this article, Mel isn't going anywhere. D'Backs are in between a rock and a hard place, it will cost a lot to fix our pen in terms of prospects. It is going to be a long season.

I say sign RJ and Curt and have them pitch as relievers. They would do a better job than the stiffs we have right now.

You might be right.

Regarding how long until Hinch is fired, I think today will come to be regarded as the beginning of the end.

When Stephen Drew sacrificed runners to 2nd and 3rd against the Braves (one of whom scored), Sutton wondered on the air if Drew got the sacrifice sign or did it on his own. (Sutton and Grace have been commenting for days about how the D'backs don't even try to manufacture runs.)

It didn't take long to find out. When Drew got back into the dugout, Hinch gave him a look of disgust and Sutton pointed it out.

This is the day that AJ Hinch showed he's lost control.

It will be interesting to see if Brynes will look at the budget and saving face for promoting a Manager with no experience or look at the standings. We have the 2nd worse record in the National League.

I can't blame Hinch for this season. What could he do differently to mitigate this disaster?

He's been basically given the option of putting out a fire with the following items:
--Gasoline
--Alcohol
--Jet Fuel
--Rocket Fuel
--More Fire

Can't blame him when none of the options that Byrnes has acquired are worth anything. Byrnes should take the hit for the bullpen. That is on him.

However, if the offense continues its strikeout trend, I might be willing to saddle Hinch with some of the blame in the near future. For now, I put it all on Byrnes.

I think Hinch is doing a fair job of managing what he has

This is the longest into a season that a team has had a bullpen ERA above 7 in a decade (the Cubs were the last team to have one this deep into the season).

However, this team is top 5 in runs, slugging, home runs, etc.

It may not be what you are used to seeing a team not mfg runs and playing more of an american league style of game ..... however, the batters are near the tops in the league for number of pitches they take and they have a team of hitters - not a team of slap guys who you want to get on base and have them steal a base, bunt to 3rd and hope for a sac fly to bring them home

all the runs in the world though don't matter when the pitching isn't there - I haven't watched a ton of games admittedly, but the ones I have watched (except for tonight where my fish made your staff look golden......) there really aren't any solid options in the pen

do the d'backs even have a lefty in the pen?

It's hard to manage when you have losing pieces

The guy Byrnes made a trade for, Rivera, is getting lit up in his first relief appearance as a Diamondback. He has given up 5 runs in less than an inning. You get rid of garbage and bring in garbage. Josh Byrnes does not know talent. He needs to go.

Rivera does not look like an improvement

You have to question whether Josh Byrnes knows how to identify pitching talent. Jon Rauch who sucked here struck out the side against the Yankees Saturday for the Twins. We basically dumped him for a six pack of beer.

I usually post at the diamondbacks bullpen site for all things Dbacks but as i post more and more here for the Cardinals im gonna add my two cents. I played baseball until college and it remains a lifetime passion of mine

Now to the Dbacks.

Where in the past our anemic offense has hamstrung our chances of contending our strength in the past has turned into our achilles heel. The success of our pitching was always dependent on Brandon Webb coming back healthy and early. The sad demise of our Ace has coincided with our bullpen developing into possibly the worst bullpen in our history. That sucktitude spread like a disease to our starting pitching which had a fairly good start to the year. Haren is not himself and Jackson is too up and down at the moment though i see him steadily improving to a commanding starter. The pitching staff failures and in particular the Bullpen devastation is too vast to lay at the feet of anyone in particular. It starts with Byrnes who thought he could fix last years poor bullpen by adding extreme flyball pitcher extraordinaire Howry and journeyman Heilman would solve it. Hinch doesnt have the balls to challenge Byrnes and does not appear to have a brain of his own, instead his rhetoric is more reminiscent of Byrnes' spokesman than the manager of the team. He is too lethargic and placatent too really make a difference in doing anything about it. For me Stottlemeyer is as ineffective a coach as ive seen with the Dbacks since Ricky Schu. We failed to recognise what a good thing we had in Bryan Price and his influence and know how is sorely missed in managing the pitching staff.

It is too simplistic perhaps but for me the problem starts at the top and Byrnes had better take a good long hard look at himself and doing something productive for this franchise soon or his name will be called at the next Dbacks culling committee or Ken Kendrick and friends as they otherwise like to call themselves.

This team is so bad right now. There is no enthusiasm whatsoever. Hinch needs to be re-assigned and a real coach needs to be hired.

Heads need to roll. Obviously a team with no direction that lack fundamentals. I wonder what it will take to pull the trigger. They could stay with Hinch and get a better draft choice

Our team is becoming the laughingstock of the league

Our 2B is a quality 2B, but he makes two errors on one play to let the Dodgers tie the score in the 8th.

Then our ninth inning reliever balks in the winning run.

It's time to end the doom and gloom on the field.

It's time to give the managerial job to Kirk Gibson. We need a fiery figurehead.

Name Jay Bell Bench Coach to coordinate the team unemotionally.

And make it effective for the rest of the season.

Give AJ Hinch an administrative job 'til his contract ends.

If Josh Byrnes doesn't do something right now, he's a fool.

There is no way this team is going to play for Hinch. AJ has no control of the players. This team needs to bring in a manager who will take no sh*t and will not be afraid to let a player know how he feels.

Here's another example of the confusion Hinch is causing.

He told the AzCentral.com D'backs site that Rusty Ryal will get playing time in LF whlle Conor Jackson is slumping.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/dia...izona-diamondbacks-rusty-ryal-left-field.html

Then Sutton says tonight he told him that Parra will get the playing time in LF as he did tonight.

Again I say, it's the wishy-washy regime of Bob Melvin all over again.

No wonder the team has no direction.

Edit: The final lineup had Jackson starting. One out of three is good only in batting, AJ.
