To those out there who are stressing out on this ?

Simple question with a followup of

How will you determine if Wiz actaully wanted to keep any of the ACs that aren't fired ?

And if he keeps any or all of the previous coaches, should be fired on Wednesday?

Let's face it. If he keeps one, for some on this board, he will be a boot licker. Personally, he can keep all or none. Until proven wrong, I'll trust his judgement.

There is no way of knowing, this is a silly question. Some people (Nidan) will take managements side no matter while others (K9) will side against management but the truth is nobody outside of the organization will know for sure if Whisenhunt keeping some coaches was a condition of his employment or not.

Tough to say--

if he stands up tomorrow and says "I am keeping them all!" -- I become skeptical

Part of the problem is that ALL the teams that changed HCs kept their staff (at least for now) --

so the only guys out there are the ones that got fired (like SF's D coordinator) -- well who wants them?

So the pickings are slim -- and who is to say the some of the current staff isnt better than that which is out there

We will never know for sure if he wants to keep the coaches on his own or if Graves (ownership) make the call to keep the current remaining staff.

I don't really care if he keeps them all but that is not going to be up to him.

No I'm not taking the side of the FO.

I'm just trying to point out that a number of posters here will only believe if all remaining ACs are fired.

The reasoning will be varied but it will come down to a belief that BB Snr is micro managing [via RG] and/or that he is cheap.

All I'm saying is that by most accounts we have hired a well qualified HC that would most likely have gotten an offer from another team this year. With that in mind it seems highly unlikly that he would have signed up for a bad situation.

In fact some reports are suggesting he liked MB and RG's approach. If he is well qualified why not believe his judegment that he is coming into a good situation ?

Devils advocate, all 7?

I mean the alternative is you're asking us to believe that by sheer coincidence the guy Whisenhunt thinsk is the best candidate for DC, QB coach, OL coach etc, just all happens to be the guys already on our staff?

Or am I misunderstanding the question?

I'm not saying he hates all 7 guys and wants them gone but I am saying if he retains some it's not necessarily because theyr'e the guy he wants, more likely he's simply willing to work with them for one year and then take it from there when their contract expires?

Like I stated in another thread, Solomon, Hargrave and Zauner are gone so I'm happy. I don't have any problems with the guys who are left.

I'm thinking ALL the offensive coaches will be gone. I think Clancy & Frank Bush survive on defense...

Nidan:

O.K., I'll play. If the new HC, one year removed from winning a Super Bowl, looks at the staff he's inherited from a 5-11 team--that finished last in what was arguably the weakest division in the NFL--and says he can't do better than any of these guys, I'm gonna suspect that he has less than absolute authority. He'd better be able to upgrade someone.

As for why Whisenhunt keeps the ones he does, I won't have a clue. I'll just hope his reasons are good ones. And unrelated to the Bidwills' payroll expense.

I personally don't believe Whiz whould have accepted the job if he was forced to accept current assistants.

I wouldn't be surpised to see shakeup in the offensive side.

What I don't know is how well CP really did. How much of it was related to DG.

I would be asking CP what he would like to change and why. I really would be interviewing him and comparing him to possible alternatives. That RG seems to like him suggests that there may be a feeling thatCP may have been hadicapped by working for DG.

I just don't believe Wiz would have signed here if he was coming into a bad situation, that makes zero sense. He had options all over the league and Pitt seems upset he left. So it's not that I am backing the FO, it's that I trust our new HC.

Good points...

With the interview process & the fact that Whiz talked to Clancy he may be keeping him for 1 year more continuity. Though there are only 32 NFL HC jobs. Also Gambo & Ash are talking that if the Steelers hire Gailey, Grimm may come here!

Why would Grimm, who probably thinks he's every bit as deserving a Wizzzz, to be a HC, work for him? Human nature tells me... not a chance.

How do you think he would he have been handicapped by working for Green?

I never heard anyone say anything about Green meddling with the Defense. His hands were all over the offense, changing the personnel on the line, switching line coaches, changing coordinators etc. But nothing really on the defensive side.

I don't see how any new HC can come in and not want their own OC and DC. Don't most if not all aspiring HC's to be have their list of prospective coaching assistants filed away somewhere? If I was going to be a HC I would want people aboard whom I knew and trusted and employed a style of defense and offense that I believed in. I find it hard to fathom that Pendergast just so happened to fit the bill for Whisenhunt at such an important coaching position.

Now if for some unknown reason CP employed a style of defense that was dictated to him by Coach Green then perhaps CP is not as bad as the defense would reflect. I am not a X's and O's kind of football fan, but I know a crappy defense when I see one.

If Grimm realizes that he isn't going to get a HC job this season then he is going to have to work as an assistant somewhere. I think he would rather work with Whiz than with someone like Chan Gailey.

Gambo & Ash said they may have an "agreement" if neither got the Steeler job they both wanted one would take the other to they're new gig...

I think they got that wrong --

it was reported that if one got the Pitt job, the other would stay on the staff in Pitt, unless another HC job presented itself

I refuse to believe that any coach with authority over assistant coaches would voluntarily re-sign a defensive coordinator that presided over the NFL's 29th ranked defense.

Apparently, Grimm is a finalist for PITT, but Gailey is not. I don't think Grimm gets that job. If PITT wanted him they would have hired him already.

Steelers name three finalists for coach

Monday, January 15, 2007
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers announced today that they have narrowed their search for a head coach to three -- Russ Grimm, Mike Tomlin and Ron Rivera.

Grimm is their assistant head coach and line coach. Tomlin is defensive coordinator of the Vikings and Rivera defensive coordinator of the Bears.

Tomlin will have his second interview with the Steelers tomorrow. Grimm will be interviewed Wednesday. The Steelers cannot interview Rivera again until after the Bears either lose in the NFC championship game Sunday or until after the Feb. 4 Super Bowl.
