I don't think he's any good. I think he was over-rated in Philly and average, at best, in Jacksonville. On top of that he's a nagging, lingering injury kind of guy, and that drives me nuts.

Just because you've heard of him, doesn't mean he's somebody we need to throw cash at. We have bigger fish to fry at OG, RB and DT... IMO.

nah i'm not saying throw big money at him...I am saying bring him in and take a look...if we keep him, sign him to an incentive laden contract. I would give him the minimum with performance clause...like he has to get 10 sacks then he gets paid.

To not give Douglas a look or consideration, would be stupid. Look how anemic our D-Line has been and KVB is injury prone.

If he's cheap, like minimum cheap, then sure.
I don't see him signing for the minimum anywhere though. Unless of course it's New England or some other contender.

I don't think he was overrated in Philly but I do think he aged A LOT at the end of his last year there. As much as I respect what he's accomplished in the past he's done now. For what he'll be asking for he's not worth bringing in.

well again he had an "off year" and still would have been the leading sack man on the cards team. for the people that say he was overrated in Philly ... look at his career numbers and tell me that he is not worth at least a look.

ND Kalu is out for the year in Philly. Douglass will most likely sign a one year deal there.

When Vonnie Holliday gets released next week by KC, we can have this exact same conversation again.

Both guys are name players that think they're good but aren't, think they deserve the cash but don't, and therefor it would seem to me the exact opposite of what DG's looking for in his first year here.

I've never thought Holliday was good, I'm still shocked that so many people here wanted him last year and talked him up like some kind of star pass rusher. He gets most of his sacks in one game and is almost worthless the rest of the year.

i doubt he makes it to philly unless there is more to the story. too many teams ahead of them on the waiver wire.

Hugh Douglas and Vonnie Holliday. Dejavu all over again. There but by the grace of the NFL gods, could our salary cap have gone.

I've been watching J-ville Jags camp on the NFL Network. Hugh seems really old, like the grampa of the bunch. He also seems to be more of a coach than a real player, like he's trying to milk another year of pay out of the NFL.

I'd rather wait for more cuts, and pick up a young guy that couldn't quite break into the lineup of a team that was strong on the D-line.

He played end on a defense with one of the best man to man secondaries in football (or at least he did when he was actually good). How many of his sacks did he get because of his pass rush ability vs a QB with absolutely nowhere to throw?
As far as career numbers go, in '95 (his rookie year) Philly had one of the best defenses in the league (#5), especially against the pass. In '94 they were actually better (#4), before he even got there. He was not the reason they had a great defense.

I don't buy it. At this stage in his career he's a liability on defense and is NOT an upgrade over KVB. That's right, NOT an upgrade (just in case you fell off your chair).

I might be wrong but as a veteran player I don't believe he has to clear waivers..he is an Unrestricted Free Agent allowing him to sign with anyone....

What I find funny is that a year ago you had most of the board screaming for us to sign Holliday and/or Douglas. From all preseason and camp observations, it appears our patience in free agency in 2004 will serve us better than the attempted mass spending debacle of 2003, where we tried to bring in a bunch of names whose performance doesn't match their hype.

Douglas has always been primarily a speed rushing DE. That's why he's played RDE most of the time.

His skills are too much like Berry's, and at 33 he seems to have lost a step. Last year he showed up at J'ville out of shape and groused about the defensive scheme there.
He never did seem to like J'ville much, so obviously he went there just for the money.

He's put on about 15 lbs from his prime playing days.

...Nah, we seem to be covered with Berry, what the team seems to be looking at is someone that can play the run a little better.
so..just say no to this.

I'll be honest, last year I hated Holliday but I was screaming for Douglas. Now I'm glad we didn't get either of them, although Douglas probably would have done more coaching that Joe Green. :bang:

HD doesn't have the ability anymore and VH never did to begin with.

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - Three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Hugh Douglas admitted he was in a "funk" last season and vowed to make amends in 2004. But coach Jack Del Rio isn't buying it.

He was released today. 34 years old. Had some great years.
