Hmm, the sofritas at Chipotle are excellent. If you are near a Veggie Grille or a Native Foods Cafe, anything on those menus is good.

You can find good options at http://www.happycow.net/, but if you only have the traditional places like Wendy's, etc. you're probably stuck with french fries, baked potatoes, and salads made of burger toppings, but that may be changing soon. I'm working on it. ;)

My wife and son are vegan.

My son loves the vegan fake meat stuff. Tastes great actually, I think the options are increasing as lots of people can't eat meat for health reasons.

His favorite is the "Field Roast" brand fake meats. They have frankfurters, Italian Sausage, Chorizo, and some actual roast looking things.

Amy's Kitchen has a lot of awesome products you can find in the grocery store, including non dairy Macaroni and "cheese", tofu scrambles, Pizza, pot pies. There is also a "meat loaf", but I forget who makes it.

Morning Star has a lot of great products, but they are "vegetarian" as I think they have some dairy products in it.

As my son explains it to me, there are a lot of products that would be vegan or vegetarian, but the dairy and meat industries have deals with a lot of the food manufacturers so they's just throw some random meat or dairy byproduct into their food for no good reason. Go figure.

We recently discovered that the Marinara sauce at Olive Garden has milk in item. But we are told they are in the process of changing that.

Thanks for the tip. I have never tried this brand, but am always on the lookout for new products!

Wow,and here I was, thinking they made that sauce with water from ponds of nearby golf courses.

Here's my question...

If vegans love animals so much, why are they always eating their food?

I don't know, I have made a lot of spagetti sauce over the years and never felt the need to put milk in it.

Yeah, I've never made it with milk either. My snide comment was directed at OG's very average food, not you.

One thing I don't understand is why vegans, and vegetarians seek fake meat products? You know, like tofu "burgers", or stuff that is supposed to mimic the taste of meat?

If eating a meatless diet is so satisfying, why seek out "meat-like" products?

I am not criticizing the lifestyle choice; in many ways I think being vegan or vegetarian makes good sense; this is just an aspect of it that I don't understand.

A lot of Vegans and Vegatarians don't seek out meat substitutes. But, yes, some do. It goes to the reason they left the world of meat behind in the first place. The vast majority become vegans or vegetarians not because of taste but because their spouse or partner makes them. But a really small percentage (approximately 99.7%) of them make the change for health or ethical reasons. Or so I've heard.

I can only speak for myself, but the "satisfying" part of a meatless diet is that no animals are killed to become part of it.

So eating a plant-based burger or something like that is just another option, like a raw salad, or pasta dish, or anything else.

I'm not sure if that answers your question, but I can follow up if you have more questions.

Also, the latest Economist includes a detailed article about the booming business of plant-based foods. It goes into the science and sustainability sides of the issue pretty deeply, but accessibly. I recommend it. http://www.economist.com/news/techn...-food-business-make-sustainable-versions-meat

Huh? Your post is confusing.

99.7% is a really small percentage?
And, "the vast majority become vegans or vegetarians because their spouse or partner makes them." - Really?

This should read "No animals are killed that I eat to become part of it"

Unless you are raising 100% of your food, I can assure you that many, many animals died during the raising of the crops needed to feed you.

Soy and Corn farming is brutal on wildlife, with monoculture ag turning million s of square miles of America into virtual wildlife deserts, with the poisoning of waterways, loss of ALL habitat, etc.

A few things. I like diet soda. Is it that much different from flavored water in terms of health? I can no longer tolerate the taste of sugar in soda. Diet soda and flavored water has served me well. I no longer buy the argument that the newer artificial sweetners are bad for you.

In regard to preservation of wildlife, the game and fish departments helps keep a healthy wild life population by controlling hunting and fishing. Actually overpopulation of animal populations is destructive to the ecosystem. I have not hunted since my youth and I would rather watch wildlife than kill it but I appreciate the role of hunting. It provides funds to protect wildlife and preserve habitat. I cannot kill an animal I raise. If I raised chickens, I see no harm in harvesting and eating the eggs. Those chickens would not be alive except for me.

Also, I am not against being a vegan if it will provide a more healthy life. I am not convinced lean meat, fruits and vegetables is not the way to go. However, as I grow older I have myself eating less meat so I am open to this lifestyle as a matter of choice. Maybe a more tolerant vegetarian diet might fit my lifestyle.

Does anyone have a link or name of good books that deal with this lifestyle?

Hey Krepie;

Have you seen this;

http://www.alternet.org/environment/why-you-should-stop-eating-breakfast-lunch-and-dinner?akid=12858.47049.AiDq0J&rd=1&src=newsletter1032849&t=7

Why You Should Stop Eating Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Dogmatic adherence to mealtimes is anti-science, racist, and might actually be making you sick.
By Kiera Butler / Mother Jones
March 5, 2015

The following article first appeared in Mother Jones Magazine. Click here to subscribe.

Meals are good, and snacking is bad. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if you eat dinner with your family, you will keep your girlish figure and your kids will be healthier. Taking a lunch break will make you succeed at your job.

Okay, now forget all that. Because as it turns out, the concept of three square meals a day has practically zero to do with your actual metabolic needs. And our dogmatic adherence to breakfast, lunch, and dinner might actually be making us sick....
